Mid-day afternoon was prime time for Chloe to be sent out on a coffee run. It was just something that happened like how the sun always rose in the east and Chloe always set out to the same Starbucks every single afternoon during the week. The woes of being an intern, but Chloe honestly didn’t mind it because at least she was guaranteed about an hour of being outside in the sunshine. One arm had a stack of scripts she had been handed on her way out the door and she didn’t even have time to shove it into her purse as she started walking down the sidewalk.
The sun was shining brightly and as Chloe made her way down the street she dug in her purse to find her sunglasses and put the scripts away when someone walking by ran into her elbow and sent her things flying. A gasp escaped her lips a she watched the multi-colored sheets of bound paper go flying onto the sidewalk just as her hands gripped the stems of her sunglasses. From her lips she whispered a quiet curse as she scrambled to pick them up and squinted slightly as something or someone blocked out the sun and loomed over her.
Caleb had taken a late lunch today because well he felt like it. Not like it really mattered. He was able to come and go as he pleased at Stark Industries. No one really cared as long as his work got done and it always got done. He was good at what he did and fast. Not the best, there were a few better, one being Birkhoff aka Shadow Walker, the legend and Caleb’s current sort of mentor. But that was all beside the point, which was he got to take lunch whenever he wanted and for however long he wanted which was definitely his type of job.
Caleb was heading back to the office when his eyes focused on his phone, when he bumped into someone, texting and walking it was dangerous. He heard the girl gasp though and saw all her papers scatter. “I’m sorry,” Caleb quickly apologized shoving his phone into his pocket. “I wasn’t looking. Let me help you.” He bent down to help her gather some of her things.
Well, at least the guy had actually stopped. There had been a handful of times that she had been part of a pedestrian hit and run and the other party didn’t stop. That usually resulted in a few choice words coming from Chloe as she tried to make them feel guilty. This situation was far more rare and she turned to study the guy who had bumped into her before leaning down to grab the papers that had scattered.
“Thank you. Just, don’t let any of them fly away, otherwise I’ll be in deep shit at work,” thankfully none of the scripts were anything top secret, but if they had come undone from their bindings them she would be spending some extra time trying to put them all back together. At least she hadn’t gotten her coffee just yet or else she would bringing yet another blouse to the dry cleaner and they had just started greeting her by name, which meant she needed to stop going in so frequently.
Even though they weren’t top secret Caleb wasn’t going to look at them. Besides any information he really wanted to know he would just find out for himself anyway. He gathered up all the papers handing them over to her. “Ah,” he replied to her comment. “I’d say I know how that goes, but I don’t. My boss is chill.” Or at least the CEO of the company was which was technically his boss and Caleb was on good terms with Tony. He wasn’t worried about his job security. As far as past jobs went, well he had worked for a bunch of criminals. Not the best to go off of for comparisons.
“Well, then you are certainly a lucky one. I’ve got a bunch of tightly wound bosses,” and that was putting it lightly. Her bosses were more than happy to yell at anyone that truly messed up, but most days they seemed to be okay for the most part. She just didn’t want to do anything that would jeopardize her internship, so she kept her head low for the moment and that is why she was always getting the afternoon coffee. She took the papers from him and hit them on the ground a couple times to get them all put in order, “Thanks for helping out.”
“No problem,” Caleb replied watching as she reorganized the papers. Damn, her bosses must be incredibly anal if she was going to this much trouble in the middle of the street no less. When she was done he held out his hand to shake. “Caleb,” he introduced himself.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Chloe,” she shook his hand before letting go and straightening herself up to full height. She shoved the papers into her purse and grabbed her sunglasses out instead. She put them on so she wouldn’t have to forget about, “Where do you work that you have such a chill boss?” It was unlikely that she was going to switch jobs or anything like that, but she was quite curious.
“You too,” Caleb replied. “Stark Industries. I can put in a good word for you if you want,” he offered. Because he knew her skill set from their very brief encounter. But whatever he didn’t mind helping someone else out and he had a feeling Chloe was a hard worker with how protective she was about those papers. “But first, what is it exactly that you do?”
“Oh,” she had heard good things about Stark Industries, but she didn’t think that the entertainment business was something that Mr Stark was truly into at this moment. It was a nice offer from the man she had just met, but probably not a feasible one, “I’m interning with Warner Brothers studios. So, unless Stark Industries suddenly has a movie studio I’m probably not going to get a job there, but thank you for the offer of a good word.”
Interning with Warner Brothers studios sounded like a big deal to him. If he was interested in the film industry and had an internship with a major studio like that he might just put up with tightly wound bosses. “No plans for a studio as far as I’m aware of,” Caleb replied. “That doesn’t sound like the worst internship though, despite the anal bosses.”
“The bosses are probably the worst part. I mean, I’m an intern, so I’m automatically lowman on the totem poll. But, they can certainly want to use you and abuse you, but it’s worth it. Although, if he ever decides to get into that business then please feel free to hit me up,” Chloe answered with a laugh as she checked her watch just to make sure she wasn’t wasting away too much time, “But, I love movies, so I’m really enjoy what I’m learning so far.”
“Everyone’s got to start somewhere I guess,” he shrugged. Caleb honestly had no idea, he hadn’t worked his way up for his job or anything like that. Hell, he hadn’t even finished high school. Luckily for him Tony didn’t seem to care about all that. “I definitely will,” he grabbed his phone back out of his pocket handing it over to her so she could put her information in. How else was he supposed to hit her up? But then he noticed her check her watch. “Sorry, didn’t mean to keep you.” She probably had to get back to her bosses.
“Oh don’t worry, I’ve still got a bit of time. I’m on a coffee run and just have to make it back before a certain time or else all the employees will turn into trolls,” Chloe teased with a smile and took the phone from him. It was a little weird to just exchange numbers with a stranger, but she didn’t mind. This was what happened when she went to industry events as well. With fast fingers she put in her cell number and email as well as her work information, “Thank you again for keeping me in mind. You’re the nicest stranger I’ve run into lately.”
“It’s no problem, and if you ever have an extra ticket to a movie premiere….” he joked. He was fairly certain interns didn’t get to go to movie premieres and even if they did he didn’t expect her to give him her extra ticket. “Clearly you need to run into more strangers,” he smirked. “But I should probably let you get that coffee before chaos happens.”
“I’ll let you know if I do,” she occasionally got to go to things. It was mainly work while she was there and she didn’t even have time to freak out over celebrities. But she had to give the guy props for mentioning it and she chucked, “And thank you again. Feel free to hit me up if you ever feel like it. And chaos would be a bad thing. I better get going.” She gave him a wave as she started to make her way towards the coffee shop that was down the street.
