Moving back to California hadn’t been in the plans for Pam, but she had to admit that she wasn’t going to say no to a proper business offer. Leaving the brothel in the hands of Bass Industries suited her well and she knew that it wasn’t something that she could keep going with for a long period of time. It was time for a change and while managing this place wasn’t all it was cracked up to be she had to admit that it was a lot of fun. The place was beautiful, the staff was decent, and she could be her usual bitchy self without much worry about her boss wanting to fire her on the spot.
And speaking of her boss she turned her head when she heard footsteps and saw the asshole himself. Chuck Bass. She hadn’t been expecting much out of him when she met him years ago with his father, but things had changed over the years and he had morphed himself into a proper businessman. A smirk passed over her lips as she regarded him with a cool stare, “Well, well, what the fuck are you doing here? I told you that I can handle this place by myself. So, unless you’re here to diddle a dancer then scat.”
As much as Chuck hated California and Orange County in general he was doing pretty well for himself out here. The Bass name was known more back East, his father was known back East. Here the smart people knew who he was, what the Bass empire was, but the majority of the people had no idea. Chuck had mixed feelings about this. On the one hand he expected everyone to know who he was, have some respect, he was Chuck Bass after all. But he also liked that no one saw him as Bart’s son. He was making a name for himself all on his own.
The West Coast division of Bass Industries was thriving. All of the hotels were more prosperous than the ones back in New York. And then there was Victrola. Chuck’s pride and joy. Choosing Pam to run it was a good choice, the club was even more of a success than he had even expected. But of course he still spent a good amount of time there. For one it was his baby but he also enjoyed watching the dancers. Which was part of why he was here tonight when he was greeted by the lovely Pam. “Hello to you too, Pam. Last I checked I was still the boss around here,” he smirked. Pam was one of the few he wouldn’t get angry with for speaking to him like that. Actually she was the only one. Not many had the balls to stand up to him. “I’m allowed to check in on my establishment no matter how capable my manager is.”
Chuck Bass was just a tiny thing compared to the other bosses she had in her life and even though he paid her for doing her job she still saw him as someone younger than her and she saw how he held himself in such high regard. Which only made him more enjoyable to tease and she quite enjoyed that they had similar personalities. There had been a handful of nights that she would talk smack about most of the people in the club and he could keep up with her wit, which was admirable.
“I guess,” the word was said with a heavy hand of sarcasm and you could almost feel the eye roll that Pam didn’t bother displaying, “But it almost makes me feel like you think it’s going to burn down if you leave me alone for too long.” If anything she would be the one that would end up burning it down in a fit of rage, but she truly did like this job. Burlesque was far more interesting than prostitution if you got down to it and Chuck had managed to assemble a group of employees that she didn’t want to murder every day. So, it was basically a win/win situation and she wasn’t going to give it up anytime soon.
Chuck detected her sarcasm. Not like she was trying to be subtle about it anyway. “I wouldn’t put anything past you,” Chuck shot back. Although it was a quip, there was a slight chance Pam just might burn the place down. He motioned to the bartender to bring him a drink, no need to voice an order, they all knew what he liked. “Maybe I just want to enjoy one of my establishments without having to worry about what’s going on behind the scenes.” There was a compliment for her in there somewhere.
“Well, I can guaran-fucking-tee that you’ll be able to do that today. Is there anyone you’re looking for in particular? Most of the girls are in the back gossipin’ and doing each other’s hair. I’d be more than happy to interrupt their slumber party,” Pam commented with a small smile. She did hear the compliment in there and she knew that he really didn’t have anything to worry about as long as she was in the building. He had gone at a time though where there wasn’t a lot of business so she was more relax with how many girls hung out backstage. It would give her pleasure to interrupt them and send them into a tizzy that the boss was here.
Chuck enjoyed all of his dancers equally. He didn’t particularly have a favorite. He had hired them all for a reason and was reminded of them each time he watched. He supposed if Blair ever danced for him like she had in the dreams she’d be his favorite, but he didn’t see that happening. “Get them all out here. Tell them I want to see a show.” He wasn’t paying them to sit around and gossip in the dressing room after all. Besides it’d be entertaining to see Pam put the fear of God in them, or more accurately, the fear of Chuck Bass.
“Perfect, I’ll go let them know,” there was a small amount of joy on Pam’s face at the idea of disrupting the girls and she quickly made her way from behind the bar to head towards the back dressing room. Her heels clicked against the floor as she moved quickly and burst through the door and sent a couple of the girls jumping out of their seats, “Get off your asses. The boss wants to see a show and you know better than to make him wait. You’ve got a minute.” Okay, she would give them a bit more time than that, but they didn’t need to know that. The faster they got it together the better it would be for everyone involved. The door was shut behind her as she made her way back to where Chuck was with a self-satisfied smile.
While Pam was in the back the bartender brought over Chuck’s drink. “Next time I expect a scotch ready the second I walk in the door,” he barked at his employee. When Pam returned the smile on her face only caused a grin to form on his own. “Get yourself a drink,” he told her. “And then come join me for the first number,” perhaps the first few depending how things were going. Besides even though this wasn’t truly a business visit he wouldn’t mind hearing Pam’s thoughts on how the club was doing and his employees.
“Of course,” she answered breezily as she walked over to the bar and got a vodka tonic before bringing it back with her to the booth that Chuck had chosen in the front of the bar. She was more than happy to watch the first dance and any other dances he wanted her to watch because it was far more interesting than cleaning behind the bar at the moment. She sat down beside him and set the drink on the table as she settled in, “I think things are going quite well around here. The employees are competent and the dancers are drawing them in.”
Business was certainly doing well. The numbers showed that. Chuck was quite pleased with himself. And his father always thought opening a burlesque club was an ill-advised idea. If only Bart could see him now. “I knew you were a perfect fit for this place,” Chuck commented taking a sip of his drink as the dancers appeared on stage. “But I’m quite impressed with how well we have been doing this early on,” an even better compliment for her this time. “No one in need of firing yet?”
“Stop, you’ll make me blush,” Pam answered in her dry tone with a small smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth. She knew it was a high honor to be paid a compliment by Chuck and she wasn’t going to argue with him on that point. When the girls made it on she reached out to grab her drink and took a long sip of it as she considered his question, “Not yet. There’s one asshole who tends to eye the female customers a little too much, but I think I can fix that. But, business is booming. Your father would be impressed.”
Chuck almost snorted at that comment. “That will be the day,” he didn’t think Pam was capable of blushing. “What about the customers? Do they eye him back?” Having good looking employees helped make the club successful after all. People did love their eye candy. Himself included. However, he didn’t want his employees sleeping with any of the customers. “Stop, you’ll make me blush,” Chuck repeated her words in that same tone. Although his father being impressed was a big deal to him than he’d ever admit, to anyone. Too bad the asshole was dead.
Oh Pam was certainly capable of blushing, but Chuck Bass was not her type. Those kind of blushes only happened behind closed doors. “He’s decent looking, but I’m quite curious as to what is going on in his head. If he starts getting handsy though I’m going to rip him a new one,” Pam was one for making sure people felt safe in a place like this and she would not second guess on taking care of an employee that was violating that. But that was pushed back to her thoughts when Chuck turned the tables with his retort and she couldn’t help but let out a laugh, “Touché.”
Funny, Chuck actually knew someone who could read minds. But no way in hell was he about to mention anything related to dreams to Pam. She would think he had lost his damn mind. Maybe one day she would experience the joy for herself. Until then he was keeping his mouth shut. “I’ll leave that in your capable hands.” It was nice to know that Chuck could take a step back. Focus more on the rest of Bass Industries. Victrola though, it would always be special to him. He didn’t think he would ever let go completely.
“Appreciate it. I like putting the fear of God into my employees,” Pam commented with a smile. She could completely understand him wanting to focus on other things in his business because that’s how things were supposed to go. She would run the day to day operations here and he would only need to step in if something big was happening. She would still come to him for hiring dancers, but most of the staff was easy enough to figure out.
Hiring dancers was the most enjoyable part of the job. He was certain Pam could handle it on her own, but he still wanted to be there for the auditions. Mostly for his pleasure. “Exactly why I hired you,” Chuck commented with another smirk before settling back on the couch to enjoy the rest of the show.
