Who: Peeta and Caroline
What: Break-from-moving date
Where: Knott's Boysenberry Festival
When: Today
Rating/Warnings: Low. Lots of cuteness
Status: Complete!

The Boysenberry Festival at Knott’s Berry Farm seemed like the perfect opportunity to take Caroline out on a proper date. Things had been hectic with the move and he was more than happy to take a day to relax and have a little fun. Looking things up online had revealed a wealth of new foods and items that he couldn’t wait to try and possibly buy. It also meant that he could think about using boysenberry in his stuff at work if this inspired him at all. Also, there were roller coasters and that was a huge win for him because he really wanted to go out and have some fun.

With Caroline’s hand in his they made their way towards the Ghost Town where most of the food offerings were going to be. He had purchased tasting passes for both the food and the wine/beer because why not? If they were going to do this then they were going to go all out. “Alright, I’m going to say you better not try to get me involved in the pie eating contest because I intend to eat so much that I explode. But I do not want to make that explosion happen while on stage trying to eat a pie,” Peeta commented with a smirk as they walked. He was fairly certain the pie eating contest was for kids, but he wanted to make sure Caroline didn’t try anything.

There was still a lot to do with the move, so much to organize and redecorate. However, progress had been made and they really could use a day off. In the back of her mind she was still thinking of all the things that needed to get done, but she was going to do her best to just enjoy the day with Peeta.

“I don’t know,” she teased as they made their way towards the Ghost Town. “I feel like you should have that in the bag. All the practice you get at the bakery.” Which of course she knew by now that he didn’t try every single pie he made but still it was fun to tease. Once they made it to the food area Caroline headed straight for the hall with the wine and beer tasting dragging Peeta along with her. Priorities, she had them.

“I don’t eat that much at one time. I’m good at making the pies, but not eating them - well, not in a super speedy way because I want to enjoy them,” that part was most definitely true. The idea of just trying to down a pie as fast as humanly possibly made Peeta’s stomach turn a little bit. But he was more than happy to do some normal pace eating at the things around here and he was more than happy to follow along into the wine and beer tasting. She had the best priorities.

He looped an arm around her when they made it inside and leaned in to kiss her on the cheek, “Alright, wine tasting first or do you want to try a couple beers before that?” He was happy with either way and he had to admit the idea of berries in beer was quite interesting. Maybe he would have to start homebrewing some day in the future and add it to things to sell at the bakery.

Caroline was about to say, she had definitely seen Peeta eat his fair share of pie, and cake, and everything else he baked. but she had to agree shoving that much into your mouth so fast did not sound appealing at all. She didn’t understand why professional eating was a thing. Who would even want to do that for a living? Gross. “Your pies are too good to eat in a rush anyway.” The ones for the contest probably didn’t taste so great, Caroline didn’t want to find out anyway.

“We can start with beer,” Caroline honestly had no idea that Peeta was using this outing to get idea for his bakery. You would think she would be more knowledgeable on the subject with how long she had been working at one herself but she didn’t really think about these sorts of things. “So,” Caroline said as they received their boysenberry beer. “I’ve been thinking about what we should do with the spare room.”

“Damn right they are,” Peeta commented with a laugh. He always viewed food as something that should be savored and not just devoured without any thought about it. At least Caroline agreed that his pies were good despite working for a competing business. It was a point of ribbing that he liked to bring up and he secretly hoped that she did like his stuff better than Audrey’s, but he would never ask her to choose unless they were in private.

He took his beer from the vendor with a thanks and took a sip as he heard her ask the question. His eyebrows raised and he lowered his drink from his lips, “Oh really? What are you thinking about? And in no way shape or form and I making it into some 50 Shades of Grey Red Room.” That was definitely not happening, but he could be talked into something else. He was kind of leaning towards just making it into a spare bedroom since Annie had a tendency to surprise them with a sleepover and another bedroom would work out better for everyone.

Baxter Bakery definitely had better coffee, but Peeta made better cakes and pies although she would never admit that to anyone other than him. It was a little awkward for her sometimes but it all balanced out pretty well. Besides Peeta and Audrey were friendly enough with each other anyway.

“Is that supposed to be some type of reverse psychology?” she teased. “Because it’s not going to work.” Caroline was so not interested in any type of sub-dom relationship thank you very much. She took a sip of her beer before continuing, it was different but it tasted pretty good. “I was thinking we should just make it into a closet,” she beamed. She was serious though, Caroline had a lot of clothes and she always dreamed of having a huge walk in closet.

Peeta didn’t dislike anyone really, so his little rivalry with Audrey was just fluff and he wished her well. They sold some similar items, but they were different businesses. It was just more amusing to Peeta than anything that Caroline happened to work for Audrey. They didn’t discuss work very often when they were home together, which was probably the better way to handle a relationship.

“No….” Peeta truly didn’t intend it like that. He did not want some kind of creepy sex dungeon in their apartment. But then she mentioned the closet and all he could do was blink. With a drink halfway to his lips. Blink. “Seriously? I really think a second bedroom would be much more practical than turning it into your dream closet,” he really hoped that she didn’t take offense to that, “Buuuut, that could be something for a bigger house in the future?”

Caroline was just teasing. She knew he didn’t honestly want a 50 shades of grey room. It was just fun to tease. But then she frowned at his comment. “But who is going to come stay in the room?” well there was Annie but that was basically it. “And where are all my clothes going to go? Both mine and yours aren’t going to fit in that closet in our bedroom,” she pouted. Okay maybe a whole room wasn’t going to work but she wasn’t going to give up without a fight.

“I was also thinking we could put an extra fridge somewhere so we don’t have to keep all my… food,” she didn’t want to say the actual word out in public because who knew who was listening. “In the kitchen anymore.”

“We could have people come party with us and they could crash there. Annie would probably end up crashing there. I just think it makes more sense,” he commented with a smile as he tried to reason with her, “And we can figure out your clothes. I honestly don’t have that many and if you need to buy an extra dresser or something then so be it. But we’re not making it your own personal closet. That’s just a little too much.” And way more Kardashian than he wanted them to be.

The pout on her face made him lean in and kiss her playfully. “And we can totally put your fridge in there. I have no issue with that. That might be a good idea,” he had to admit that. It would nip any awkward moments in the bud if someone accidentally stumbled upon it.

She was glad no one had opened up Peeta’s fridge and found her blood. That would be weird to explain to his friends. At least the ones that didn’t know what she was. “But if we turn it into a bedroom we can’t put a fridge in there. Who knows who will stay over and look in there.” And yeah Annie looking in there might not be the best idea either even with knowing who she was. “Plus I have a lot of dresses. They can’t go in a dresser!” Seriously Peeta.

She did did give him another kiss though, this time a bit more passionate. Maybe she could convince him to at least use some of the room for her clothes. It wasn’t like they were going to have someone staying over every night. She just got away from having roommates thanks. Her free hand cupped the side of his face, “what were you saying about a house?”

“Okay, well, then the fridge could be in our bedroom? And you must have some clothes that can go in a dresser, Care,” Peeta was astounded by how much clothing she managed to have and he honestly had no idea what else to do about it. He could tell her to purge her clothes, but she would probably freak out about the idea. He didn’t have a ton of things in his closet right now anyway.

The kiss was happily returned and he smiled as she cupped his face. The question made him laugh, “Just saying we will potentially need a house some day in the future. And if we got a house then maybe we could find one with a much bigger closet or you could do whatever your crazy shopping heart desires.” The walk-in closet was a much more accurate idea than building a special closet for her.

No way in hell was she getting rid of any of her clothes, so it was a good thing Peeta didn’t try and suggest that. If anything she was just going to keep getting more, he was going to have to get used to it. She’d wear him down about the room eventually, sectioning at least some of it off for her clothes. “Fine, fridge in our room. But that still doesn’t mean the whole room has to be for guests.” It wasn’t like a bed took up that much space and really it’d mostly just be a place to crash. It wasn’t like any of them really had anyone out of town that’d be coming to visit.

“You’re thinking that far ahead?” Caroline beamed letting her thumb run over his cheek before dropping to his side to grab his hand. “You have to try the beer,” she said leading him back out so they could try some pie next, see how it compared to Peeta’s. “I didn’t even know boysenberry beer was a thing.”

She couldn’t possibly wear all those clothes. Sometimes you just needed to purge some things, but Peeta knew better than to wade into that dangerous territory. He loved Caroline and he did not want to get into a fight about something as petty as that. He let out a chuckle as she finally conceded to a bit in this argument, but he knew they were going to continue to fight about the space. “We’ll see once we put some guest room stuff in there. Maybe we can set it up to double as something else, but let’s get the guest part of it settled first?”

“Well, I don’t want to pay for rent forever,” Peeta commented with a similar smile as he leaned over to kiss her temple and then following her to the pie, “I’m not surprised. Craft beers are totally using all sorts of strange ingredients now. I’ll make sure to try the beer when we come back in. The wine is really good.”

She certainly could wear all those clothes. And Peeta usually appreciated how she looked, but then he also liked how she looked in just his shirt. She doubted he would want her only wearing that ever, like to her classes. “I guess I can agree to that,” because once Peeta saw that the guest stuff didn’t take up that much space it would be easier to convince him to make room for her clothes. Especially when they weren’t all fitting in their room. Oh maybe she could even convince the landlord to let the expand the closet in their bedroom to go into the spare room.

“Me either,” and a house would be nice. She wouldn’t mind having a hot tub again. Or even a pool. But she was getting ahead of herself. For now the apartment was perfect for the two of them, or it would be once she had a bigger closet. “That doesn’t seem too different from you,” she teased but she did feel like Peeta was always trying out new things or mixing random ingredients. Although his creations always tasted amazing. At least the ones Caroline tried.

Good. An agreement. At least that was figured out for the time being. Who knew what would happen when they actually got around to moving things into that room and Caroline trying to put all her clothes away. It wasn’t going to stay quiet for long, but at least they weren’t going to worry about it while they were out today. Today was about food, rides, and having fun together.

“Good, because I see a future with you,” he pointed out with a smile as they wandered around. The comment about trying new things reminding her of him made him laugh and he shook his head with an embarrassed look, “Yeah, I can see how you think that. I just don’t see the point of doing the same old, same old. It’s more fun to experiment and see if you find something new that people are going to love. I have to admit that boysenberry isn’t the typical thing I would use, so I’m hoping this will inspire me a little.” They made it to the stand with pie slices and he ordered one for them to share.

Caroline honestly had no idea if her boyfriend was more excited about the food or the rides. She was more excited about the rides but she didn’t mind trying the boysenberry flavored things first that was why they were there after all.

“That’d be pretty sad if you saw your future with someone else,” Caroline commented as they waited for their pie. “I mean I would have wasted so much time moving,” that was obviously a joke it would have been sad for lots of other reasons but she didn’t think she had to worry about that. She may be the immortal one, but Peeta made her feel safe. “I don’t think I’ve ever tried anything with boysenberry,” Caroline admitted. Especially if it wasn’t typical for Peeta to make it because that’s mostly where she tried new things. More so than Baxter’s.

“Well, I’ve been meaning to tell you. I’ve been having this dreams. This dark haired girl and I have children in them,” Peeta drawled with a smirk as he took a bite of his pie. It was an honest response and he hoped she would pick up on the joke. But in this life right now she was it for him and his dreams were truly a non factor, “And I actually wanted to force you to move in so I could dump you and move out and leave you with the rent payments.”

“And boysenberry isn’t something most people think about. It’s not bad though. This pie is pretty decent and I think I could possibly make something better,” it would take just a few twists and changes and he could probably make something really good. He took a few more bites as he tried to figure out what all they used in the recipe.

Oh, Peeta was just hilarious wasn’t he? Caroline knew exactly who he was talking about considering she knew pretty much everything about his dreams, or at least she was pretty sure he had shared everything. She certainly had. “Ah, well that’s too bad. I guess I’ll just have to marry my dream fiancee and move to Dallas,” she teased right back. Although she mentioned nothing about having his babies. That was still way too much of a weird subject for her. “That is way too evil of a plan for you to have come up with,” she added with a good natured smile to his dumping her rent payment comment. Peeta was way too sweet for all that.

Caroline took a few bites of pie before responding. “I don’t know,” she said thoughtfully. “This pie is pretty damn good. I don’t think you can top it.” Obviously more teasing, but whatever. She had to get back at him for the whole dumping her joke.

“You would not do well in Dallas. You have to be a lot perkier and more cheerleadery,” Peeta teased and he wasn’t even going to touch into the Debbie Does Dallas type idea, but at least Caroline was teasing him back about it, “And that is really mean of you. You doubt my ability to be evil?” He was going to say that killed people without a second thought in his dreams, but that would just dampened the mood.

“Well, remind me that you don’t believe in me and I’ll make sure you never get a chance to try my pie,” came his retort with a laugh as he leaned over to kiss her once again as they wandered around, “Alright, more food or do you want to go on a ride first?” The roller coasters were calling his name and he didn’t want to wait until too late when the park filled up.

Caroline burst into laughter at that comment. The only person perkier than her that Caroline knew was Anna, and she was definitely not more cheerleadery than Caroline. She was captain back in high school, she actually still had the uniform. It had yet to be unpacked but it would go somewhere in her tiny closet. She wasn’t getting rid of those memories. “I don’t think you know me as well as you think you do,” she replied with the smile still on her face. “There is no doubt, I know you aren’t.” Dream actions didn’t count. She’d killed too. Mostly when her humanity was off but she also killed twelve witches to save Bonnie and some random guy when she had first turned. But keeping the mood light was a good choice, they had enough seriousness lately. They didn’t have to bring up their dream baggage all the time, they both knew what the other had been through.

“Is that supposed to be some type of punishment?” Back to the teasing. “I think I’ll be able to survive without trying one of your pies. But you know if you don’t give it to me then you’ll never know for sure which I think is better,” she pointed out returning his kiss as they began to make their way through the park. “Definitely rides first.”

“Oh I do, but you’ve retired that cheerleader side of yourself and you aren’t as perky as some of those Cowboy cheerleaders and that’s what I think of when I think of Dallas,” Peeta pointed out with a laugh. Although he wanted to argue with Caroline about the evil part because not only had he killed in dreams, but that was part of his career. Time spent in the military wasn’t spent just standing around guarding things. He had done a lot of things in his things, but he chose not to talk about it very often. But seriously, that was enough of letting himself get lost in those kind of thoughts.

“I don’t think you understand how good my pies are. I mean, you’re still new to try out all my stuff, but you really shouldn’t underestimate my pies,” Peeta laughed, “And maybe you can earn trying my pie back. Let’s get going to the rides. We’ve got a full day ahead of us and I want to beat the crowds.”

“I can’t inflate your ego too much.” She had a feeling no matter what Peeta would let her try it anyway. “Now come on,” she said dragging him to one of the roller coasters. They didn’t really have to worry about crowds. Caroline had no issues using her compulsion to get them to the front of the lines. But still no more food for now. “It’s time to have fun.” They could eat more boysenberry stuff later.
