Who: Ariel and Stiles
What: Mermaid egg hunt/first meeting
When: Easter Sunday (3/27/2016)
Where: Aquarium
Rating/Warnings: PG
Status: Closed/Complete
It was Easter Sunday, and the aquarium had a special treat for the kids. The ‘mermaids’ would be performing egg hunts inside various tanks. Giving the eggs to the children with baskets near by. Ariel adored her job, but she felt an even more connected with her job once she started having those dreams. She even noticed she was able to hold her breathe longer than expected. Which was great for the show and kids. Ariel would be assigned the most dangerous tank. The shark tank. No one really knew how she was able to do it. But the sharks never attacked her.
The aquarium was filled with people today, which she adored as she waved at some of the kids through the glass. Fire red hair danced in the water as Ariel came to swim to the bottom of the tank and search for those eggs. Above her would be sharks swimming from one side to the next. But the animals never bothered her. She felt connected to them. With her frame swimming up and giving the eggs to the workers outside she would come back down.
Except as she came into the water, she would be faced to face with a great white. She could hear the people outside worried for her safety. But slowly she held her hand out towards that giant beast and came to bring her hand to touch at it’s head and soon side. The beast itself would soon swim away, as Ariel went back below to gather the last remaining eggs. But as she came up, she would stop mid way.
Piercing blue hues would notice the boy from the net. The one who dreamed of werewolves. Those eggs would be given to the workers through a bucket as she kept inside the water and moved to the glass as she stared at him. The way she looked, and her mermaid attire, made Ariel look like a real mermaid. Almost.
***
He had been watching her with interest, but when she caught his eye, he stood mesmerized. He literally couldn’t move, couldn’t look away. He felt the corners of his lips turn up in a smile. She was more beautiful in person than he could have ever imagined from the pictures he saw on the network.
And of course, he knew she dreamed of mermaids, which just made it all the more beautiful to see her in in the water like she was. He understood the appeal, and why so many people were drawn to the tank where she swam. She was graceful and looked exactly like a mermaid should look.
He lifted a hand in an awkward little wave.
***
When he came to wave, she smiled brightly. Motioning to the left of the tank. Quickly she came to swim in that direction until she vanished inside a small tube in the tank. It didn’t take her long before she was out in the crowded streets with the other people. But it wasn’t hard for her to spot him out. Her red hair would be tied in a bun to let it dry as she came to smile brightly at him. Her own little wave given in his direction. Outside of Kitty, Ariel hadn’t had the chance to meet new people yet.
Once she was close to him, her smile stayed along her lips in such a bright way. But slowly the reality sank in. How was she going to talk to him? It was easy to type on the net but now they were face to face. She did the only thing she could think of. She came to touch at her neck where her vocal cords would be at. Soon shaking her head and motioning with her hands that she couldn’t talk.
Hopefully he would understand what she was saying, if not she would text it to him.
***
He smiled brightly as she walked toward him. She had a stunning sort of beauty that had him staring until he forced himself to blink.
It took him a couple seconds to process what she was trying to communicate, but he figured it out. “It’s okay. I can talk enough for both of us,” he told her. He wasn’t as squirrely as his dream self, at least not yet, but he could talk ceaselessly once he got on a subject.
“I mean, I assume you’re not deaf? You just can’t talk?” Because well, if she was deaf, they might have to resort to communicating with text. Stiles knew the alphabet in sign, but he didn't really know any signs. And trying to fingerspell a conversation would be hellish for him.
***
She came to smile brightly at him. Touching her ear and giving him a thumbs up on her hearing. Ariel came to put her arm around Stiles arm and start walking. Only to look at the people all around them having fun. Ariel loved this place, as she came to look to Stiles and smile brightly. She came to take her phone and send him a text to make this easier.
~Did you enjoy the show?~
Is all she said as she came to glance over in his direction for the moment. Only to pull him into one of the cave like themes they had with the see through ceiling that allowed the whales and fishes swim over them.
***
“I did,” Stiles told her. “I didn’t know I’d see you. That was a nice surprise.” He smiled a little. He had never really cared about aquatic life, it just wasn’t something that had ever really interested him. He had come to the Aquarium today on a whim, for something to do because it was Easter and his dad had to work anyway, and he was missing his mom.
“You looked like you were really enjoying it, too. That makes it so much better. It wasn’t like watching someone do a job, it was like watching a real mermaid in the water.” When he said he could talk enough for the both of them, he kind of really meant it.
***
She came to smile brightly as she nodded her head in his direction Her smile was bright as sun as she kept her arm wrapped around his. She was glad he was able to talk for the both of them. Only to glance down to her phone for the moment as she sent him another text message.
~I’m glad you came~
Is all it would say. ~Not many people can watch me swim with the sharks~ She added as she brushed her hair from her face lightly. Only to point towards the glass ceiling above them. Soon she came to climb up the side wall lightly thanks to the spaces wide enough for her feet. Once reaching the glass she would touch it, as some of the fishes swam to her touch and hovered. Until she moved her hand, and they swam off.
***
Stiles watched her climb up the wall. He stayed where he was and waited to see what she would do. He wasn’t worried for her, he knew she knew what she was doing. She wasn’t just showing off for him, she was showing him what she loved to do.
He stood where he was and smiled. He needed this, just a day to sort of relax and forget about the dreams for a little while. He needed to get away from his usual routine and do something different. This was definitely different!
***
She came to smile when he smiled. Just to jump down and stand next to him. Her hand coming to take hold of his hand as she came to walk towards another section of the park. This time it would be the penguin section. Already she came to move into the back portion of the section with Stiles behind her. Once in the back, that bucket of fish would be taken hold of, as she handed it to him. Already they moved deeper in the back and came to the area with all the penguins. Soon she took a fish and feed one. Only looking to Stiles to do the same. That smile never leaving her features for the moment.
***
Okay. Penguins were cool. Really cool Stiles had seen an animated movie about penguins once, and he really liked it. He liked penguins. And now, he was going to feed some. He plucked a fish out of the bucket and set the bucket down so he had both hands free.
“This is so awesome,” he said, looking over at Ariel. “I remember hearing about this little kid who went to an aquarium with his parents or something, and he stole one of the baby penguins. Put it in his backpack and got it all the way home before he told his mom he had it. I’d do something like that. I mean, I wouldn’t because it’s illegal, but they’re so cute I’d totally take one home if I could,” he said with a smile as he fed the penguins around him.
***
She couldn’t help but laugh at the story Stiles told her about the little kid taking the baby penguin home. She nodded her head in agreement, that they were cute. Ariel loved all sea animals. When one of the smaller penguins came towards her, she would put the fish away. Just to take Stiles hand and place it on the small birds stomach to tickle. Once the penguin felt that tickle sensation it would ‘laugh’ and flap its little wings in excitement.
Ariel snickered lightly as she moved her hand from Stiles, to let him enjoy this moment with the little bird. She came to walk away for a moment, before coming back with some papers. When he was done with the baby penguin, Ariel would show Stiles the paper. The aquarium had ‘adoption’ papers for certain animals. Meaning people could adopt and name one of them, while they stayed in the aquarium.
Ariel figured, Stiles might like that idea.
***
Stiles definitely liked that idea. “This is awesome,” he told her. He’d have to come up with a good name for the penguin. His very own penguin. How cool was that? Maybe if it was a girl, he’d name it Claudia after his mother. That seemed like a nice gesture. It would mean more than flowers on a headstone.
“Seriously, this is really neat. Thank you.” The whole experience at the aquarium had been amazing. More than he’d anticipated, or ever expected.
***
Ariel smile brightly at the fact that Stiles liked the idea of having his own penguin. Ariel gave him the papers to fill out later when he wanted. Only to motion towards the food stands to get something to eat. For her not talking, it was going smoothly with just showing him around for the time being. Her hand taking his, as she came to take a seat at the table and smile brightly towards him. She was hungry and would assume he was too. At least she hoped he was.
***
It was like she knew him or something, because Stiles? Was always hungry. He settled at the table with a plate of food, more than happy to take a food break. He would refrain from stuffing half the fries in his mouth all at once, and try to eat them one or two at a time in a more civilized manner.
He didn’t mind her not talking. Of course she couldn’t, so it wasn’t like she was just quiet. But it didn’t bother him at all, he talked a lot and could talk enough for both of them. Besides, he seemed to be understanding her pretty well.
