Rebekah was a bit nervous as she finished getting ready. Clothes were tossed in a heap on the bed, all discarded choices before settling on simple black blouse and a nice pair of jeans. She hadn't been on a date in a long time. Not since she had become a nanny to the girls. Men her age were far more interested in going to the weekend frat parties, something Rebekah just didn't do. Not when she had two little ones to look after even though Amycus did give her the weekends to do what she wanted. She had actually been a little bit surprised that Enzo had asked.
Deciding that if she stayed in the house any longer she'd end up changing four more times, the blonde grabbed her purse and said goodbye to her boss before slipping out of the house. Living in Costa Mesa made it a quick trip to Ciao Bela, where she had agreed to meet the man. Walking inside she allowed herself to be seated while she waited for him, taking in the quaint atmosphere.
Love for Enzo had been a disaster in the almost two years that he had been back in Orange County. Caroline had dumped him for some loser that she didn’t even end up staying with, and then Katherine had cheated on him with his best friend and business partner Damon. He really wouldn’t be surprised if Rebekah wasn’t interested in him either. But he thought she was beautiful and attractive and was glad she had decided to come see him.
“Hello beautiful, thanks for meeting me here.”
Looking up she smiled when she saw a familiar face. She stood and walked over to him, leaving up to place a light kiss on his cheek before pulling away again.
“Of course. It's a lovely place Enzo” she said kindly as she looked over the dining area once more. “I'm glad to see it doing so well. Thank you for inviting me.”
“If you think this is nice, you should see the business I’ve started with Damon. The hottest nightclub in town. Purgatory,” he said with a smile. “We are talking about opening up another one in Los Angeles. Your brother is going to invest in it and be an owner. You’ve gone to see him, I trust?”
With a charming grin, he poured them some wine. “So, why don’t you tell me what you’ve been up to since your departure from our fair city?”
“Kol mentioned it to me yes.” She said with a nod. If it had been anyone other than Damon and Enzo, she would have tried to talk him out of it. But the two of them were trustworthy and she could count on them treating her brother fairly. “He seems to be doing well. He and Tatia seem very happy.”
Taking the wine, she thanked him before taking a small drink. While she loved what she did, it was nowhere near what people would have thought she would have done. It wasn’t what her father had expected of her either. “Well, I traveled around a bit, got to see some of Europe. Italy is a lovely country and I hope to go back again. Then I moved to New York City where I took up a job being a live in nanny for twin girls. And I absolutely love every minute of it. What about you? What have you been up to other than starting up your successful businesses?”
“I did a six month internship in Italy as a chef with my grandparents. They still own an old Italian restaurant there. Sort of where my parents, and then myself, got inspiration for being a chef. I learned a lot from them, their old world ideals about cooking and so on.” He sipped his wine, appraising her, “what made your boss decide to move to the OC? Rather convenient considering your family is here”
When she asked what he was doing and what he had been up to other than his businesses, he paused. “If I updated on on what I’ve been up to, we’d need a lot more booze and I wouldn’t want you to think I was just getting you drunk.”
“His job had him transfer here.” She explained. “I could have just stayed in New York, but I love those girls too much so I came back. I never would have imagined coming home again”
It still felt a little weird being back home again. She had already visited with Kol a few times when she had a day off. She still had yet to actually visit her parents though they had spoken on the phone. She knew she needed to see them eventually. But it could wait a few more days at least.
At Enzo’s comment she frowned slightly. She hadn't kept up with anyone the way that she should have while she was away. “Are things good now though? Happier at least?”
“Well, Damon’s not dead and I’m still doing business with him and consider him my best friend, so, sure, ya, things are better. Even if he did sleep with my girlfriend and she left me for him,” he shrugged his shoulders and sipped his wine. “I’m glad you came back though, blondie. It was your brother against that asshole dad of yours, I thought that Damon’s father was an asshole, but yours is an absolute nightmare.”
“But you’re a nanny. I have to admit, not quite the profession I ever saw for you, but as long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters. To hell what anyone else would say.”
Hearing about the little triangle Enzo went through caused the girl’s eyebrows to raise slightly. It sounded like something out of one of those really bad soap operas. She and Katherine weren’t exactly friends, but she didn’t hate the woman. But she remembered that Enzo had cared about her.
“I hate that Kol was here alone going up against father,” She admitted with a small frown, her finger tracing lightly over the rim of her glass. She hated that Kol was constantly seen as a disappointment. If anyone should be given that title she supposed it should have been her. After all her brother had a nice job and a wife. And here she was living the life of a nanny and still single. But she couldn’t see herself doing anything else.
“Let me guess. You thought I would go into something having to do with fashion or design. Or becoming a trophy wife” She teased with a laugh. “I really do love it though. I love being around children and the twins are just the most wonderful girls. I couldn’t imagine life without them.”
“Well I knew you wouldn’t become a trophy wife. Your brothers would have crawled from out of the woodwork to kill the poor lad. I’ve never seen a more protective bunch of men, honestly,” he said with a shake of his head. “But yes, admittedly so, I thought you’d do something with fashion. It’s quite refreshing to see that you’re not some dumb airhead and that you actually have a head on your shoulders and can stand on your own two feet. You’re obviously not worried about daddy nixing your trust fund.”
“He did threaten to.” She admitted with a small shrug. “But he changed his mind when he realized that I wasn't going to quit. So now it's there for when my “silly hobby” falls through. I am still a slave to fashion but I just don't get to wear it as much. I learned that the hard way when Madison ruined one of my more expensive shirts.”
She laughed slightly at the memory, even though before during her teenage years she would have been enraged. It would probably be a shock to her old circle of friends that she was more of a jeans and ponytail girl now. Finishing up her wine she looked over at Enzo with a smile.
“What movie did you have planned for us?” She questioned with a slight tilt of her head. “I'm going to guess not a rom com.”
“I’ll let you pick. For now I have the finest pasta dish that Ciao Bella has to offer being prepared for us and then we can go to the movie. Whatever you like. I’m not a picky man,” he said with a smile as he poured her another glass of wine before topping himself off.
“I have to admit, you surprise me. Your whole family does. You seem insistent upon rebelling against Mikael and finding any and all ways to annoy him. It saddens me to see that your mother allows him to treat you all that way. Is that why most of them left Orange County? To flee from Mikael?”
“That sounds perfect. Though you may regret letting me choose,” she teased with a laugh.
At Enzo's question Rebekah looked thoughtful. She couldn't speak for her siblings though she assumed that their father was a part of it. Rebekah herself was probably a surprise since her father tended to dote on both her and Freya. But it didn't erase seeing how he treated Kol and Klaus.
“I think for me mostly, I just wanted to be my own person. Here I'm ‘a Mikaelson.’ But outside of this town I was no one. There was nothing to associate me with. I kind of liked that” she admitted.
“So, what made you and Damon decide to open a club?” She asked, shifting the topic. “It seems spur of the moment but fitting for the both of you.”
“Damon said ‘lets do it’ and I said ‘why not?’ And thus, it just, happened, I guess you can say. You know Damon and I, we are always willing to take risks. Mainly because we both land on our feet, or we can make people...agreeable, shall we say, if the tides are turning against us? Plus I think he was getting tired of being a teacher and needed an excuse, needed a reason to break free and try something new.”
He smirked and thanked his wait staff as they brought the meals.
“As for me regretting letting you choose the movie, while that likely may be true, I’m always up for the challenge a lovely lady presents me with. So go ahead, do your worst.”
