Elphaba was part way through preparing diced chicken in a cream sauce with vegetables and rice when the doorbell rang. She’d been feeling sick nearly all day and had only managed to nibble on some rice crackers and some cheese at about midday. She’d managed to keep what little she’d eaten down so far, but she knew how quickly things could change. Putting the lid back on the frying pan and turning the heat down, she moved to the door and opened it to welcome in her guest. Smiling at Elsa, she invited her in and shut the door behind the girl. “Hey, how are you?” She asked, offering to take Elsa’s coat from her.
“Hey” Elsa said, giving her friend a brief hug before shaking her head, “I can hang it up, you just take it easy. How are you feeling today?” she asked as she did hang her coat up, and followed Elphaba into the kitchen.
“Thanks,” Elphaba smiled at her softly. “I’m fine, tired and a bit sick, but ok,” she explained as they headed back to the kitchen. “But that’s pretty much the same as every other day,” she sighed, lifting the lid on the pot of rice and stirring the contents. The starchy water wasn’t helping her nausea but it was nearly ready, so she turned the heat off on the stove and fetched the sieve from under the counter and placed it in the sink. She placed some water on to boil in the kettle and started preparing the plates and cutlery, but when she stood up from grabbing the plates from the low cupboard, spots of colour danced in her vision and she grabbed hold of the counter to stay upright.
Elsa rushed to Elphaba’s side when she saw her sway and wrapped an arm around her waist, “Steady there, come on sit down. I can serve up” she said leading her to a chair and helping her to sit. “Let’s get you some water” she said grabbing a glass and filling it, using her powers to cool it. “Are you alright?” she asked, brushing Elphie’s hair from her face as she looked at her worriedly.
Elphaba let herself be led to the chair and sat down. The pounding in her head made it a struggle to reply for a minute and she closed her eyes, waiting for it to pass. Her vision slowly returned but her head still felt disconnected from the rest of her. “I'm ok,” she told Elsa, but her voice sounded weak. She sighed and rubbed her forehead, leaning an elbow on the table she was sat next to. “Sorry, I just got dizzy. It's stupid really, but it was the rice,” she explained, frustration mounting.
“It wasn’t stupid at all, you just rest here and I will sort everything out” she said laying her hand on Elphaba’s forehead in order to cool it a little and hopefully bring her some relief. “Have you been to the doctor?” she asked before moving to dish up dinner for them. She hadn’t known too many pregnant people but this seemed excessive for morning sickness.
Elphaba closed her eyes gratefully as Elsa cooled her forehead. When she moved away, she picked up the glass of cool water Elsa had left and took a sip. “Yeah, I went for a check up last week. Nina told me to keep an eye on what I'm eating and if it gets much worse to go back and see her,” she told her, sitting back in her chair. “Today's been hard, I only managed a small amount of crackers and cheese at lunch but nothing else. I had hoped I'd be able to get through dinner without any incidents,” she huffed a laugh. Just another thing she couldn't seem to get right. “Sorry.”
“Perhaps seeing her again would be a good idea, I imagine it won’t take long to lose nutrients” Elsa said before shaking her head, “You have nothing to be sorry for. Pregnancy affects everybody differently, you just seem to have gotten the crappy end of the deal this time”
“I know, I just hoped it would be easy…” Elphaba sighed, watching as her friend bustled sound the kitchen. “Other people seem to have these perfect pregnancies, that’s practically all you ever hear about in the news. I wouldn’t want to be wasting her time again when it’s just dizziness. It’ll pass, I’m sure,” she dismissed how she was feeling, hoping to have a pleasant evening with her friend.
“You hear about the perfect ones but there are just as many difficult ones” Elsa said, “And I am sure Nina wouldn’t consider it a waste of time. Just keep an eye on it okay? If you don’t feel better soon make sure you contact her” Elsa finished dishing up and moved to the table with the plates.
“Damned celebrity news,” Elphaba grumbled as Elsa returned with their plates. “I will, thanks Elsa. Sorry I’m such a miserable host,” she apologised again. “Tell me about your day and cheer me up,” Elphie smiled.
“You are most certainly not a miserable host” Elsa assured her as she sat, patting her friends hand, “Now let's see where do I start...”
