Things were Orange County levels of calm, but that didn’t mean Raven took a break from her nightly patrols. It just meant she only had to focus on normal crime as opposed to dangerous weather or the like, or fog that nearly killed her. Yeah. January had not been a fun month. She still managed to get everything done that needed to be in terms of homework, normal work and the like, so it wasn’t even that nightly patrols interfered with her grades.
School was important after all. Even if she had yet to figure out what she wanted to do once she graduated. But that was why she was focusing on her lower division general education at the moment. To figure that out, as well as see if transferring might be an option at a later date.
For now though? It was sticking to the shadows, keeping an eye out for anything suspicious.
Damian was out on one of his nightly patrols, perched on the edge of a building, black hoodie zipped up, domino mask covering his face and utility belt around his waist. Since it was a normal patrol there was no reason to wear his full costume, which he tried to only wear when there was an actual emergency happening and he needed the extra protection.
As he waited up in the shadows, watching the streets below, Damian saw something move on the building across the way and in moments he had crossed to the next roof, ready for a fight, but soon realized that there would be no need for one, “Fancy meeting you here.”
There were good things about being an empath. One such thing? Raven was able to pick up on Damian’s energy and so she didn’t attack him before he had gotten there. That would have been awkward. It would have been reflex, but also awkward since they were allies and friends. There was no use for her glamour when she was on patrol and so she was dressed in her regular outfit as opposed to the white one which came when she accessed all her powers.
“You would think we would run into one another more often than we do.” And straight to the point, but that was Raven for you. They both clearly had tendency to go on patrols. It was in their blood now.
“I guess we must patrol different places. I mean, it’s not like the OC is small or anything,” It made sense, considering Damian was out patrolling most nights once he’d finished his homework, but had never run into Raven. “So, how’s it going?” He took off his domino mask and slid it into the pocket of his hoodie for the time being.
“Probably.” There were plenty of different areas one could end up when they were patrolling. Different directions to take, different towns and cities within the area. With the handful of people who were super heroes in their dreams, they could all patrol nightly and still never run into one another.
“It’s okay. Managed to get into UC Irvine.” Since technically she should still be in high school, but had tested out. Even if she was still anxious. Waiting for another set of dreams since she knew those who dreamt of the same people as her had them. “You?”
“Really? Congratulations,” Damian smiled at Raven and leaned against a low wall, “Any idea what you’re going to major in?” Damian was still undecided what he was majoring in, but considering the money he’d gotten when he’d turned eighteen from his mother, which he was still trying to figure out where it had come from, he didn’t really need a degree in anything. He didn’t really need to work. He could do what he did in the dreams and be fine, but he needed something to do during the day other than meditate, train and see Celaena. So school seemed like the best idea for now.
He crossed his arms over his chest, “Not much is different really. Except Celaena claims to they’ve got a showcase thing they’re rehearsing for and doesn’t have time to hang out.” He frowned slightly. He wasn’t exactly sure why, but he didn’t entirely believe her, but he didn’t want to call her out on it.
A faint flicker of a smile was given at the congratulations. It was more than most people got out of Raven, but Damian was one of her people so she let her defences drop some when around him. “Thanks. Not yet, just focusing on the general education right now. Maybe transfer once i figure it out. Not sure though.” She wanted to help people, offset the horrible things that came with her. But there weren’t exactly degrees in how to offset being a portal to hell/daughter of the Russian mafia.
“Well, that’s only temporary.” A quick read of Damian’s expression and body language, and she quirked a brow. “You do trust her, don’t you?” Said the person who trusted a small handful of people. “Isn’t that sort of necessary in relationships?” As if Raven knew. She still had yet to remind Ed they had kissed after he got out of a coma. People were weird, so were emotions. Especially emotions.
Damian nodded, “Of course I trust her. I just feel like there’s something she’s not telling me. I am one of the best detectives in Gotham, after all. Like, I don’t think she’s cheating on me or anything like that, but I know when someone isn’t telling the complete truth.” He didn’t know what it was, but he suspected it might have something to do with Celaena’s dreams.
Well, not telling people the entire truth was part of Raven’s general way of being. Admittedly it was also because Raven didn’t let people close for their own good. And the world’s since her and attachment could end very badly. That and strong emotions in general. So she was probably the wrong person for this conversation, but here they were.
“Then trust she’ll tell you when she’s ready.”
Damian sighed and nodded again, “I know. I guess, after everything with Alyssa, I can’t help but worry.” Damian didn’t think that Celaena was just going to up and dump him like Alyssa did, but that didn’t mean the fact that he knew there was something she was keeping from him didn’t worry him. It helped that Celaena had never had a thing with Logan or anyone else like him, but there was still that little bit of doubt that tried to sneak in and convince him that it was something horrible that she was keeping from him.
“She seriously did a number on you, didn't she?” It was almost as bad as Beast Boy and Tara. Or worse actually. Raven might not be the best at understanding relationships but she could tell this was obviously a lasting thing. “You can't keep worrying about what happened with her, otherwise you'll just end up in a self fulfilling prophecy.” At least that was how it seemed to Raven.
“Just a little.” It had taken a long time for Damian to fully get over Alyssa and he’d thought he’d gotten over her when she’d left the first time, but it took seeing her do to someone else what she did to him to fully get over her. He didn’t know why that was, but he supposed having someone who understood what she was like helped. He hadn’t talked to Peeta in a while, but he knew that the other man had managed to move on, mostly, and he was glad it hadn’t taken him as long as it had taken Damian. Having Celaena around helped too and he only hoped that whatever was going on was something they could work through, “I know. I’m better now than I was before though. Just be glad you didn’t know me when she broke up with me.”
“Well so long as you know.” As for the comment on how she should be glad she hadn't known him when it first happened, there wasn't much to say. It probably would have been hell if she had her abilities. Annoying if not. “Not sure you would have been friends with a thirteen or fourteen year old. But noted.”
Damian nodded then laughed at that, “I keep forgetting you’re younger than me.” When Damian met Raven in his dreams, he was the younger one, “But now we’re friends so that’s all that really matters.” He felt his phone vibrate at that moment and pulled it out to see a text from Celaena, asking him if he could come over, “It’s Celaena. She wants me to come over.”
“I get that a lot.” Given Raven’s tendency towards keeping to herself and being serious more often than not, she definitely didn't act her age. Add in her fake ID in order to work, at least when she was underage, and she was used to it. “But that we are.”
As Damian’s phone buzzed, Raven quirked a brow and said nothing. Though it seemed to be the girl in question. “Go. I've got the streets covered for tonight.”
Damian smiled, “Thank, Raven. We’ll get together soon when we can hang out somewhere other than a rooftop.” He texted Celaena back, telling her he’d be there in about half an hour then put his domino mask back on and pulled up his hood before moving to the edge of the roof, “I’ll talk to you later.” With that, he stepped off the side of the building to a ledge below and started back towards where he’d left his car.
