WHEN: March 18th
RATING: Low
STATUS: Complete
St. Patrick’s Day was usually that excuse to go out and get completely wasted and do something stupid. And Derek had been there, done that, having expected the same this year with more than a few beers and shots before making out with someone in the corner of a bar somewhere. Instead he was sitting on his couch with an arm wrapped around the shoulders of a very attractive Hawaiian, various bottles spread out on the coffee table while some shitty reality television played on Netflix.
Honestly, in his opinion, this was much better than the usual St. Pat’s.
He took another swig from his beer and adjusted his arm (which was going slightly numb) to stroke over Danny’s shoulder. “Do people actually watch this sober,” Derek asked suddenly. He couldn’t imagine people getting into some ghost hunting show without alcohol to back it up. He didn’t really count himself as a believer of ghosts though. Werewolves? Sure. Spirits? No.
“Because I think I need to be drunker.”
When Derek mentioned that he wanted to spend St. Patrick’s day with him, Danny didn’t have this in mind. In all honesty, he thought they’d be in some bar, waiting for the bartender to notice them while being pressed against drunks, clad in all green. He had donned a green shirt, himself, and he had put on a pair of cute underwear too.
However, when he’d arrived at Derek’s and saw all the liquor, he had smiled and liked the idea much better than what was ‘normal’ for the day. He didn’t know how they ended up watching this show but he was certain that Derek picked it. “We don’t have to watch this, you know…” he said, finishing off his current drink and leaning his head against Derek’s chest, while one of his hands was resting lightly on the older man’s leg. It had been there for a while now and Danny was quite enjoying their current position.
“It’s okay to change the channel, Derek.”
He smiled down at the man cuddling into him. “I’d say we could watch that Cupcake Wars show, but then I’d probably want cupcakes…” At least ghosts didn’t make him hungry. Danny being so close, on the other hand, that certainly had an effect.
Derek couldn’t resist tipping his head down and shifting just enough to press their lips together into a kiss that tasted like alcohol and not much else. He slid his tongue into the other’s mouth to tease, then pulled back, grinning. “You want another one,” he asked, motioning to Danny’s empty glass.
Danny gave a small chuckle. “You really must like reality tv,” he commented as he contemplated grabbing the remote to find something a bit more interesting. Yet, he found himself distracted as Derek initiated a deep kiss between them. Even if it tasted of booze, Danny was very much into it.
“Sure…” he answered, before giving Derek another soft kiss. “Surprise me.”
“It’s more like a love-hate relationship.” He gave a shrug. Honestly, he blamed Cora and Peter--with those two, the worse the show was, the more they seemed to enjoy it. “You’ll never catch me watching Keeping Up With the Kardashians though.”
Derek took Danny’s glass and got up from the couch to get some ice and rifle around in the kitchen for some kind of snack. The best he had was a bag of chips that he tossed into Danny’s lap when he sat back down and grabbed for the bourbon and lemonade to mix together.
“I’m glad you came over and decided to miss out on drunk dancing. Think of all the guys you could’ve kissed tonight.” Derek really only wanted to think of Danny kissing him at the moment, but he still shot a smirk over his shoulder, finishing pouring the man’s drink.
“I bet that’s the show you watch when you are all by yourself, right?” He teased the older man. The bag of chips on his lap was a surprise and he found himself grabbing a few chips and snacking on them as he waited for his drink.
“I’ve already done that whole...thing...besides, why make out with random drunks when I can make out with you?” Danny pointed out. He moved himself so that he was laying back, “Isn’t that part of the reason you invited me over?” Maybe he would get a chance to show off his cute underwear, after all.
Derek handed the glass back over to Danny then plopped himself down on the couch beside him, stealing a chip. After he swallowed, he gave a shrug, eyes wandering to the TV. “It’s a possibility. If you want to. I don’t want you to get the idea I’m just using you for sex or anything like that. It’s nice to have the company. I don’t exactly have many friends.” He was far too dark and mysterious for that.
Danny hadn’t thought that at all. It was just somewhat normal for them to drink and then end up naked together. He felt somewhat guilty, thinking that he had somehow implied the contrary. He sat up and looked at his friend. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to make you think that this was just about sex…” Danny glanced at the TV, feeling embarrassed.
Had he put his foot in his mouth? Probably.
“No, Danny. I just...with how things go between us, I wanted you to be sure that I’m not the kind of asshole that would just use you like that. The sex is amazing, yeah, but so are you.” The older man gave a grin and leaned in to press his warm lips to Danny’s forehead in a kiss. “If nothing happens, or we just make out, it’s all fine. Now, let’s just forget about how awkward that kind of was and...come here.” He leaned back and wrapped an arm around the other man to pull him in close, into a position like they’d been in before Derek had gotten up from the couch.
“Better?”
Danny smiled, warmly, as Derek spoke. “Derek...I have never thought of you to be that type. You’ve actually made an effort to spend time with me and chat with me at work. If anything, I think of us as ‘friends with benefits,’” he explained, as he was pulled against his friend. So what if they enjoyed the benefits quite frequently? As he leaned against Derek, he glanced up at the man. “I like hanging out with you, you know...regardless of if we have sex, or not.”
“Friends with benefits is good,” because he wasn’t ready to admit to himself he had some growing feelings. That was just...messy. This was so much simpler and easy, not that he was sure he’d always be so satisfied. Laura liked to remind him that one day his icy heart would melt. There was a chance Danny could be the one to do it.
Derek met Danny’s gaze, smirking and pushing back anything in his mind but the present moment. “You’re pretty adorable, you know that?” And just to back that statement up, he booped the other man in the nose and chuckled.
Danny rolled his eyes, slightly after the other man had touched his nose. “I’ve been told...among other things,” he replied, before giving Derek a playful shove. His own feelings were similar to Derek’s but he was content to just keep things as they were. Sure, they already acted as a couple, at times, but so what? “How about we find something better to watch?” He suggested as he reached for the remote.
He was still laughing and allowed Danny to push him back, though it’s not like he went very far. A couple of seconds later he was back in the other man’s space, pulling him close to press a kiss to the corner of his mouth. “You pick. I need another drink.” He wanted a beer, but he also didn’t want to move again, so he settled for too much bourbon and too little soda in his glass. He was more than a little content just enjoying the alcohol and warmth of another body next to him.
“I will pick, this time. Cause for some reason, you have an inclination towards these terrible reality shows,” the younger man replied in a sarcastic manner. Danny smirked as he was kissed but kept his focus on the tv. “Don’t get too drunk,” he teased. After a little bit of searching, he settled on ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ since he still had a slight pang of homesickness. However, Derek had been a good distraction...and comforter. “Is this okay?”
Derek leaned back into the couch and got comfortable with his other arm around Danny’s shoulders. Once he realized what he’d chosen to watch, he knew why and glanced over. “This is fine. Cora was obsessed with this movie when she was younger. I think I’ve seen it at least fifty times.” He chuckled at the memory--things were so different then. But it didn’t compare to this movie bringing up memories of a home out of reach.
“...You can talk about it, if you want. Or you can just stay right here and you don’t have to say anything,” he told Danny, pressing a kiss to his temple.
Danny appreciated that Derek didn’t mind, and he selected it, liking that he was getting a little more insight into the man’s past. He leaned against Derek and gave a slight shake of his. “I appreciate your willingness to be my ‘shoulder to cry on’ but I’m good...just spending time with you, like this, helps.” Lightly, his hand settled on Derek’s knee and gently stroked it, before he grabbed his drink and took a sip.
Usually this sort of thing didn’t come easy to him. Opening up and just being weren’t something he was used to, not since losing Paige before the end of high school. There was pain and fear buried deep inside of Derek, a part of him not wanting to get overly attached when life was so fucking fragile. But here he was, going silent and running his fingers over Danny’s arm and tracing invisible patterns over his warm skin while the cartoon played.
Maybe he could get used to this again.
