After three years of living North Carolina for school, Tyler had realized pretty quickly after moving back home that he needed his own place. One that was definitely not near his parents’ house. He had almost saved enough already after working at Victrola’s to put a deposit down on a new place, and so he couldn’t believe his stroke of luck when he saw Kitty post on the Network that she was looking to move.
It was four o’clock on the nose when Tyler rang the bell, looking forward to checking out the loft.
Kitty opened the door, a cat curling around her feet. She nudged it back and pushed curly brown hair out of her face. “Hey, you must be Tyler, come in!”
As she’d described, the bulk of the apartment was an open floor, with a lot of empty space for someone to use for whatever hobby or reason they wanted. From some stains and piled up aisles it had been an artist’s paradise. A sheet hung over one wall.
Stairs led up to a loft that looked out over the floor. The loft itself was big enough for two bedrooms, a kitchen and a living area. The living area looked as though Kitty had converted it into a mixture of gaming and television viewing, with a complex looking computer system against the far wall. A little kitchenette completed the loft.
“We never did much of our own cooking, so we didn’t need a huge kitchen,” Kitty explained.
“I am,” Tyler said, stepping into the apartment and offering his hand. “You must be Kitty.” And… she had a cat. Wasn’t that just perfect?
Tyler looked around the apartment, and he liked what he saw. His parents had rented him an apartment while he was studying at Duke, and while it had been bigger than the University dorms, and he had loved the freedom that had come with living on his own, it had still felt rather closed in compared to the mansion he’d grown up in. This apartment felt far less claustrophobic. He hadn’t done much drawing lately, but he also felt the urge to pick up a pencil and do some sketches now that he was here and seeing it all laid out for an art room.
“I don’t do much cooking myself, so that’s fine,” Tyler said. It was a skill he’d never learned growing up, so he got most of his food as take-out.
“The oven works, stove is good for...whatever. Fridge has plenty of room for leftovers.” Kitty grinned at him. It ..hurt a lot, giving this place up. It had been a gift for a friend, but Kitty had a habit of running away from memories. At least Gaz was alive and out there, somewhere.
“The wiring is excellent, and there’s solar panels on the roof so that’ll help with the power bill, too.”
The more Tyler heard, the more he liked it. The solar panelling helping with the power bill was an extra plus, since he was pretty sure that this time around he wouldn’t be getting much, if any, help from his parents for the bills. But he was already mentally laying out some workout equipment in the open loft, where he could put the desk he’d be doing his school work at, where the best place for his TV and gaming systems would be so he wouldn’t have to worry about glare off the screen.
“This place is sweet,” he admitted, looking around. “What’s rent and bills like? Neighbours cool?”
“Neighbors are pretty cool. I’ve never had any problem with them. There’s this cute old couple next door. A very dapper man and his boyfriend.” Kitty rubbed her arm. “I actually own this outright. We could have you renting or even rent to own, I’m not too picky and we can probably work out something affordable to you.”
Good neighbours was a plus. The last thing he needed was someone banging on his door in the middle of a workout. “Rent to own? Seriously?” Tyler asked, looking around the apartment again. “I’d definitely be down for that.”
She folded her arms, tilting her head to the side. “What can you afford? I’m pretty lenient as long as you don’t try to walk all over me.”
Tyler thought about the question, doing a bit of quick mental math in his head. “I can probably comfortably afford about fourteen hundred, though I could manage more if I had to.”
Kitty had the mental math on how much it had cost to purchase, and that was definitely reasonable. Worse case scenario she had to kick him out but would still have part of the money for the place back. “How about thirteen hundred. We can draw up a contract so we’re both protected.”
“That sounds great.” A surprised, but broad, smile crossed his lips. He really had managed to luck out. This was so much better than anything he could have pictured when he decided that he needed to find his own apartment. “Just show me the dotted line.”
She grinned at him. “I’ll get something printed up for you to sign. It won’t take me long to move out. I’ll leave most of the furniture behind.” Even a crazily painted bookshelf. “Electronics are coming with me though.” She winked.
