As relieved as Sakura was that things had ended up working out after all in regards to the catastrophe and people forgetting the person they loved most…. Now she was exhausted. She wasn’t strong in her own magic yet, which meant that changing the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards was extremely taxing on the teen. But she would keep at it, because one never knew when they’d need to use the Cards again.
Then there was the fact that Kero wanted to show Caroline his real form now that she had the Earth and Fire cards. So with another practice for cheerleading tryouts set up, she’d promised Kero he could come along and show Caroline what he really looked like.
The one thing she hadn’t counted on was how tired she would be. It was why she’d gone to her dad’s office to wait. She’d gotten to the campus early and really, she only meant to close her eyes for a bit, not fall asleep.
As usual Caroline’s schedule was packed. Even more so now that she was planning on moving. Of course she kept up with her commitments though. It was a struggle, but she was managing. Eventually she knew she would have to give something up, but that was to think about another day.
Today she was helping Sakura prepare for her cheerleading tryouts again. After her last class of the day she headed over to their usual spot and waited. After about fifteen minutes Sakura still hadn’t shown up which was unlike her. She was frequently on time, early even.
Caroline decided to check with Sakura’s dad. She made her way over to his office only when she got there she found a sleeping Sakura. Well that was a relief. The girl was okay, but obviously exhausted if she was napping in her father’s office in the middle of the day. Maybe they should skip practice today.
Once it was clear to Kero that it was just them and that Sakura’s dad wouldn’t show up, he started flying around and tugging at Sakura’s hair.
“Sakura….SA.KU.RAAAAA”
That did it. Even if he was still in plush form, he was able to wake the girl up, who yelped and fell off the couch in her dad’s office.
“Kero-chan, why…” That was when she noticed Caroline and her eyes widened as she jumped up. “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to fall asleep and be late!” Shooting a look at Kero since he should have woken her before, she scratched the back of her head before stiffling a yawn.
Caroline had seen a lot of strange things in her time at Orange County. But this flying, talking, stuffed animal was definitely up there as one of the weirdest. “Hi Kero-chan,” she greeted Sakura’s guardian.
“It’s okay,” Caroline assured her. She knew what it was like to be stretched thin and exhausted. “If you need to skip practice today I understand. Sometimes it’s nice to just, catch up on sleep.” She wished she could do that but with her crazy schedule sleep was often the thing she skipped out on.
Sakura was about to protest that she was fine, but of course Kero would speak up instead for her.
“She’s using a lot of magic here and in the dreams. It’s draining her.”
“Kero-chaaaaaaan.” Yes she did whine at her guardian, but she could have sworn it was supposed to be secret. Yawning she rubbed at her eyes before straightening up. “I’m fine, I mean it! I didn’t mean to fall asleep. You should stop worrying.”
She wasn’t going to question how he knew what was happening in the dreams. It was Kero, he just knew. She was also still worried about Yukito and if Yue would show up, because Yue was kinda scary. It was a lot. “Besides, didn’t you want to show Caroline something?”
“Not in here!”
Shaking her head, Sakura picked him up from having landed on her shoulder. “Fine fine, we’ll find somewhere for you to show off.”
“Maybe you should slow down on the magic here,” Caroline suggested to Sakura. She knew she couldn’t do much about magic in the dreams. That must be tough though, to go to sleep and wake up more exhausted than you were originally. Thankfully Caroline’s dreams were mostly just annoying. Sure, she was a bit restless after a night of dreaming, but they didn’t drain her.
“Well if you ever need a day off just let me know.” Although it looked like today wouldn’t be that day. Sakura seemed insistent that they still practiced.
“Show me something?” well that definitely caught her interest. “Lead the way,” she had no idea where would be the best place for whatever this was.
Persistence was definitely something she excelled at. Sakura was convinced she would be fine, and she didn’t want her family to worry… so going about things like normal it was. Even if she was really tired. But the Cards were beginning to feel cold, and she was afraid of what would happen if she didn’t change them.
Still. Maybe she should just wait for them to change on their own from the dreams. She just was scared it would then be too late. But there was talk of leading the way to show Kero’s true form off and so she grabbed her stuff and led Caroline somewhere that a stuffed toy turning into a lion more or less wouldn’t be noticed.
Of course, once they were there and Kero turned into his real form in order to show off, Sakura jumped back and flailed.
“You need to get used to it!” Really. One would think she was used to it by now, but it was still really startling to see here.
Caroline didn’t really understand the whole Card thing. So even if Sakura had tried to explain it she probably wouldn’t have understood. But then she supposed it was that way about most other dreams. Or actually just dreams in general. She still didn’t fully understand her own. Like how the fuck a vampire pregnancy was possible.
Well she wasn’t expecting that. He looked kind of like some warrior tiger with wings and was a lot bigger than Caroline would have imagine from his stuffed form. Sakura seemed startled as well. “Wow,” Caroline said because it really was the only reaction. “What just happened?” she asked once the initial shock wore off, glancing from Kero-chan to Sakura and back.
Sakura just knew what she needed to do in order to help the Cards. For them to turn into just normal cards, to go cold? That would be really sad and she wanted to protect them just as she did her family and friends and people in general.
“Sorry sorry!” Quickly bowing in apology to Kero because he was right, she should be used to it. But it was still startling to see even when she was prepared for it. Besides there were answers to give--- or not. As Kero had it under control.
“I didn’t have enough magic to be in my real form. When Sakura received the Earth and Fire cards, I was able to return to my form.”
Sakura just nodded since she knew the specifics and he had it covered.
Why was Sakura bowing to her guardian? Was that a normal thing? It didn’t seem like she had much to be sorry for. His real form was quite startling even for Caroline. And after dreaming for so long not much startled her anymore.
“Didn’t she have fire before?” she asked Kero since he was the one that informed her . Sakura had set those monkeys on fire. Caroline remembered that clearly. But maybe she didn’t have the Earth card? “How do the cards work anyway? You get them and then you can just use that power?” she asked turning her attention back to Sakura. That was what Caroline had picked up from it at least.
“She did and then I got some of my abilities back but I still was stuck.” It was complicated, but that was the basic idea at least. Because to try and explain Clow Reed, the guardians, the cards…. That would take a lot of time. However, Kero also knew that he probably shouldn’t remain in his real form too long, just in case the jerk older brother showed up, or Yue…. he didn’t want to deal with the stick in the mud, even if he also missed him.
As Kero went back to his ‘disguise’ form, even if to Sakura it seemed much more fitting for him, she instead was trying to figure out how to explain the cards.
“Sort of? They were created by Clow Reed and have magic. When I catch them, or master them, that’s when I can use them, but they choose who uses them. There’s Li-kun from the dreams, and he had some that obeyed him instead.” Sakura was finding herself missing Syaoran and Meilin even though she never met them here, just like she missed Tomoyo. But there wasn’t much she could do.
“I had to find them all and master them to keep a catastrophe from happening. Now they rely on my magic so I need to turn them into Sakura cards so that I can use them again and so they don’t die.” Which was why she wanted to change them as fast as she could and why it was so exhausting.
Dying cards, made as much sense to her as pregnant vampires. The things that came out of these dreams. “So you’re trying to make the cards go from Clow Cards to Sakura Cards?” See, she was following along. Unless that was totally wrong, then she was just lost.
She had been focussed on Sakura as she explained the Cards that she hadn’t noticed Kero’s change. That was until she glanced back over and he was plush again. “How often does he go into his real form?” It hadn’t lasted long and Sakura was startled when it happened, so Caroline was going to guess it wasn’t often.
At least it seemed that Caroline was following along. Because Sakura didn’t know how else to explain it. That was basically how it was, and when she had found out, she’d been desperate to change them all at once but she’d woken up and been unable to do so. Which meant she was trying to do so here. “Basically.”
And then the question about Kero, “Not a lot. There hasn’t been need for it here, but his small self is easier to hide. He just wanted to show off.”
Caroline nodded as Sakura explained. It made sense that hiding his real form was a thing. Even in Orange County. Not everyone here had powers or even dreams for that matter. "Yeah everyone might not be so accepting," Caroline agreed. "So you ready to practice? Or do you want to take a nap?" Now that Kero had shown his true form it was time to get to it. But really either way was fine with Caroline. She'd understand if Sakura needed more rest.
“Which is sad.” But given even in her dreams most people didn’t know about him or the cards? Well. It made sense that people here wouldn’t be understanding and it was the same thing for her so it never really bothered Sakura. And it didn’t seem to bother Kero either. But then she was being given an option and the teen nodded quite determined. “Ready to practice!” Because who let something like exhaustion slow them down?
