It was in Laura’s nature to throw herself into everything she did. Be it danger because she was the only one who couldn’t die, or just her school work, she did.
Between school work and her ‘night’ work as Wolverine, she’d been really busy since the mess with the fog, and probably not the best girlfriend in the process. But she felt guilty about Rapunzel having had to witness that. She never wanted to see that look on her face again.
They hadn’t been spending every waking minute together like they had briefly when they first started dating, but it was to be expected when things got a little crazy. Now that things were back together weather-wise Rapunzel was back into full swing of classes and she was so ready for spring break even though she had a slight break with the blood rain and those shenanigans. She was still trying to deal with the concept of being dreaming about a Disney movie and that she had watched her girlfriend be injured multiple times. There was a rational part of her that knew that her girlfriend wouldn’t die, but what if it was that one time that she wasn’t able to stay alive? It worried her.
To be fair, Laura wouldn’t mind spending every waking minute together, but she felt like she had a responsibility to use her powers to help people, especially young girls and runaways. It was the school work that was being distracting. And okay, perhaps still a little worry that she was bad for Rapunzel.
But the blonde was an addiction and Laura found herself at Rapunzel’s doorstep with her backpack and some iced coffee. They didn’t make hallmark cards for ‘i’m sorry I’m a mutant and die sometimes’.
She let herself in, which was custom at this point. “Rapunzel?”
“In here,” she called from the dining room area. She had been working on a few projects and was currently playing around with a bit of Mod Podge, which meant she had to take over her table with newspaper. Hilariously enough she was trying to decorate mason jars to make little lanterns, so she had paper everywhere and she probably had some glue on her face. But that same face lit up the moment she saw Laura walk towards her. It was so easy to forget about what was troubling her when she felt that love in her heart when she saw her.
Laura stood in the doorframe to the dining room area, watching Rapunzel with curiosity. There was glue on her face and some bits of paper from her work and Laura had never seen anything so beautiful. She blurted, “You look radiant.”
Well, that was unexpected and Rapunzel couldn’t do more than just blush and smile, “Aw, thank you.” She put away the things she was working on and moved so that she could give Laura a proper kiss in greeting. Her project could wait for a while now that her girlfriend had shown up.
She put her backpack on the ground so she could probably wrap her arms around Rapunzel, and properly kiss her. Laura felt like it had been longer than it had since they’d seen each other. They hadn’t even spent a night together since the fog and she hugged Rapunzel to her tighter. Like she was afraid Rapunzel would decide that being the girlfriend to someone who could die and come back would be too much.
It was certainly a thought that briefly passed through her mind. She wondered if she was a liability for Laura because she didn’t have that ability to survive anything. But it was also hard to date someone who could survive and would readily throw herself into dangerous situations because she didn’t want to watch Laura be hurt again. They needed to discuss it, but for now she was happy to return the kiss and looped her arms around Laura’s neck.
A low rumble sounded in Laura’s throat, and she deepened the kiss. Even if her intention had been to literally come over and study for reals just being close to pushed that from her mind. She broke the kiss for air, and murmured, “I’m sorry I haven’t been around.”
“It’s okay,” Rapunzel commented quietly as she unlooped her arms so they could part. There was a reason that Laura was here and they couldn’t just get distracted by the physical side of things, “You’ve been busy. And I haven’t been much fun lately since I’ve been working on projects for work. Midterms are coming up soon.”
“And I wanted to give you time.” Laura massaged her own hand. “After everything, with the fog. I know it must have been disturbing to watch.” She’d been thinking about it so heavily that it was the first thing she really blurted out.
“I appreciate it. It’s taken some time to think about it. A lot of things have been going on in my mind. There was some other stuff that happened right before all that went down that I haven’t had a chance to talk to you about,” she was still a little scarred from watching Laura die, but she wasn’t quite sure what to do about that anymore. Was it just a hazard that came with dating her? Would she be able to avoid that forever?
“I am trying to not be as reckless as I can be in my dreams. Even when I am...out at night trying to help people.” Rapunzel’s words made Laura stiffen a little. She stopped rubbing her hand and lifted her eyes. “Are you okay? Is everything okay?”
“I’m glad you’re trying to help people, I truly am, but I don’t want you to put yourself into such risky situations. I know it’s hard since you know you’re indestructible, but everyone has a kryptonite,” Rapunzel explained to her and gave Laura a slight shrug at the question, “I’m fine. I just -- remember when I took Henry to Disneyland?”
Laura nodded her head. She knew in her dreams Warren had a hard time with it. Harder time than Rapunzel did, but Rapunzel also didn’t watch it on a daily basis. She frowned, chewing her lip. “I will be careful. But if I have to be hurt so someone else doesn’t, then I will put myself in the way.” She could heal from a bullet, most others could not.
“Yes? Did you have fun?”
Rapunzel completely understood Laura’s mindset, but it was still hard to watch. It was worth it to save a life, but there may come a time when she couldn’t heal instantly. She was doing her best not to worry too much about it. “And yeah, it was fun, but when we were there I saw something. There was...there was merchandise that featured my dreams. I think my dreams are a Disney creation or something.”
It was cause for Laura to blink. She dropped her hands to her side and stared a little, trying to understand what Rapunzel meant. “You’re...you dream you’re Disney?” Of course, Laura’s absolute favorite anything was Pinocchio. So she loved Disney and everything Disney put out, even if she wasn’t all that vocal about it.
“I’m a Disney Princess,” she spit out with a wrinkled nose. It wasn’t that Rapunzel hated Disney, but it was not what she wanted to learn when she went on a trip. It was still surreal and she wondered how many other people were like her and discovering her dreams were something else entirely.
Laura grinned, then contained herself, but the glow of the smile was still there. She was dating a Disney Princess and it suddenly clicked which Disney Princess. The hair, the glowing the healing, the name. She bit her lip. “I like Disney movies more than you’d think.”
“I -- what? Seriously? This is your take away?” Rapunzel raised her eyebrows and tried to glare at her girlfriend, but it obviously fell flat. It was nice that Laura liked Disney movies, but it had been a bit of an existential crisis for Rapunzel and Laura wasn’t taking it like Rapunzel thought she would, “I mean, that’s good?”
“My dreams are filled with people from alternate realities. So in an alternate reality, Tangled actually happened.” Laura took Rapunzel’s hands and squeezed them. She realized she wasn’t taking it as seriously as she should, all things considered. “And I have already been faced with this kind of existential crisis, so it is easier for me to understand. So tell me how this makes you feel?”
When Laura explained it like that then Rapunzel understood why her girlfriend wasn’t making such a big deal out of it. She gave a bit of a shrug at Laura’s comment and a confused look came over her face “I’m really not sure. I mean...it’s weird, but then I remember that it’s not my real life or anything like that. It’s just weird.”
Laura nodded. “Someone wrote the story of your life. Maybe they saw it in their dreams, maybe it was simply a coincidence. But you are a real person. You are not just a … cartoon.” Though a very pretty cartoon and no wonder Rapunzel was a good singer.
“Perhaps you’re right. It just took me by surprise and I wanted to make sure to share it with you. Everything went crazy after that trip and I hadn’t even thought about it until I was making these lanterns, but I’m glad you don’t think I’m silly,” Rapunzel was lucky for that and she pulled Laura in for a hug as she did her best to relax and not think about this.
“It’s kind of….I like Disney.” Laura hugged Rapunzel tightly, rocking her a little. She tried to be reassuring. “It doesn’t matter though. You’re still real, a real person. Solid and flesh and living.” She cupped Rapunzel’s face, pulling her head back to look at her. “Your soul is beautiful.”
“You’re so sweet to me,” Rapunzel commented with a smile as she leaned in to properly kiss Laura. She was so glad that her girlfriend didn’t mind that she was dreaming of being a fictional character, but when your girlfriend was a superhero then it made sense.
“Because you deserve…” Laura trailed off as they kissed, tangling her fingers in Rapunzel’s golden hair. She really did love Rapunzel’s hair, and wondered how long it would grow. She also thought she’d look cute as a brunette, if that happened. Really, Laura was easy to please where that was concerned.
“Alright, if you’re going to play with my hair then let’s at least go sit on the couch,” Rapunzel teased as she grabbed Laura’s hand and pulled her along to the couch. She was ready to just relax and spend time with her girlfriend and the worries about the Disney stuff and the weirdness of the past dream stuff didn’t stay in her mind.
