Vanessa had decided that the leaflets and possibly even the brochures for the gallery could do with a bit of an update now that she had fully taken over and changed the layout of pretty much the entire building. Last week she’d had the outside painted a fresh white so now would be the perfect time.
She’d contacted a publisher and negotiated a price for the printing and they’d put her in contact with a recommended photographer who was coming today so they could discuss the job and ideas she had. That was who she was waiting for now.
***
He’d been fumbling outside the building a little, a folder contained more than a few pieces of his work. Peter had experience with film, and it ranged from hobby to needed this to make next month’s rent payment. Looking up at the building he was about to go into though, he could have sworn something was different about it. Did they unveil something and he just wasn’t aware of it? It was different though, that was for sure.
A free hand attempted to fix the mess of dark chocolate hair on his head but the bedhead thing was permanent, and forget a comb or hat it didn’t work. Clearing his throat he’d step into the building and glance around before he spotted a woman who seemed to be waiting. This had to be her, right? Walking over casually he’d look at her carefully without staring or anything like that, “Miss Marianna? I’m Peter, Peter Parker. I was sent over?” That oaffish grin easily made its way onto his lips as he held out his hand.

Smiling as the young man walked over and said her name she shook the offered hand, “Mr Parker, thank you so much for coming over. I do appreciate it” she said, her voice slightly accented though it wasn’t obvious where from. The benefit of growing up all over Europe. “Shall we go through to my office before I show you the gallery?” She suggested before they headed that way and she held the door open for him, “Can I offer you something to drink?”
***
“Oh no, not a problem at all.” Her accent was picked up on but he wasn’t any good with them and he wasn’t about to try and guess either. “Yeah, that would be great.” Nodding as he allowed for her to take the lead, of course he was curious and looked around while they walked. Wanting to take in everything that he could. “I have to ask, did something change on the outside of this building? I come by here so often and haven’t really appreciated it as much as I could have. It looks different though, new almost.” It was one of those burning, and overly nosey questions that burned him till he found the answer. “Some water would be great, thanks.” Walking inside and taking a less obvious look around before turning to face her and then the rest of the office as well.
***
“Oh yes, I’m glad you noticed. I had it repainted, so it looks brighter and fresher” Vanessa told him, “I was hoping it would draw attention and if it looks new then it’s more likely to bring people in”
Moving to the small water cooler she had in her office she filled two glasses and brought them over before taking her seat opposite him. “So Mr Parker how long have you been working in photography?”
***
“The structure alone is more than an eye catcher, shouldn’t have any problem at all with bringing new people in.” Peter smiled lightly at her, he at least could admire the architecture of the building, even if a little more than most people.
He nodded in thanks for the glass of water and took a brief sip before he would even try to answer her. His nerves were a little up there and he’d hoped that didn’t show too much, meanwhile clearing his throat after. “I’ve been working in photography for a little over two years now. I brought a portfolio if you’d like to see some samples of my work?” He held up the black folder and placed it on the desk for her. “Started out mainly with architecture but about a year in I started to expand and see what other spectrums I could expose my abilities to. It took off from there and ever since.”
***
“It is indeed, a most marvellous building” she agreed, always liking it when people appreciated her gallery.
“Oh I’d love to thank you” she said, listening to him and looking up to make eye contact as she looked through his portfolio, “I can certainly see why, you have an incredible eye for angle and perspective. Your interest in architecture seems to add to your work” she said as she gestured to some of the shots in his portfolio, “As you probably know I’m looking into producing new leaflets and possibly a brochure for the gallery so I’m looking for shots of the building as well as interior shots of the room layouts and some of the collections”
***
“I was told a little bit about what it was you were looking for, but hearing it from you I think gives me a better perspective on what it is you’d truly like to happen with the leaflet and brochure.” Peter nodded, when he was working it was really the only time that he kept on the more serious side, as well as the straight though narrow path of moral righteousness. If only to pay off his gambling debts.
“It sounds like you know exactly what you want, and to work with that would really be an honor. Most people have ideas and don’t know how to put them into action or envision them. I admire that.” He shrugged a little taking a drink from his glass, “I would love to be apart of this as well as see and hear more. Maybe a testing to see if you like the shots I could come up with and if we’d work well enough together to achieve what you want?”
***
Vanessa smiled, “I’m glad you understand, I was hoping you would” she told him, as soon as he’d mentioned the exterior of the building her feelings had warmed and she had thought he was the right person for what she had in mind.
“I am a little controlling when it comes to the gallery, a little protective maybe” she admitted with a chuckle, “I think that sounds wonderful. I’m already looking forward to working with you so I think that’s a good sign”
***
“I think it’s generally always a good sign when someone looks forward to anything,” it was a minor joke but he wasn’t about to push his luck with her either. Smiling he’d nod lightly and continue to let his eyes do a little investigating on both her office as well as her. He tried to read her a little, what she was looking for and for whatever reason he could get that from mannerisms sometimes.
“How soon were you looking to get a project like this off of the ground, as well as any possible limit on timing for when you’d like it to be finished? I’m good with deadlines, so that won’t really be a worry and a place...like this? It really should be put more into the spotlight as soon as possible.”
***
Vanessa laughed at that, “I believe you are right” she told him. Vanessa was a very well put together woman, she felt that how she represented herself reflected on her work and gallery. She tried to be kind and friendly while still being professional. There were little personal touches around her office, photographs of various European cities which she had taken herself, a small Eiffel Tower statue on her desk along with a collection of pens from various monuments in and around France.
“I’d like to start as soon as possible, with maybe a mid to late April deadline?” She suggested, “If I can get everything printed before summer hits and the tourists descend in earnest for the holiday period I am hoping it will attract more footfall”
***
“I could start on something like this as soon as Monday morning. If that works for you? I'd just need an outline of any specific shots and I can take it from there.” It was a short deadline, but it was something he was used to as well.
He took in the small things in her office and some made him wonder a little more, but he kept his mouth shut. He was happy to have something lined up, something that could keep him and his mind busy. With the way things were going lately he needed to dive into work. “I gotta thank you again for reaching out to me for this project.” He smiled oafishly at her but Pete was hardly one who looked by the book professional anyway. He just made it by was all.
***
“Oh that would be lovely. Don’t feel pressured though, I want you to take whatever time you need” Vanessa told him, he’d be paid for his time of course. “Oh no thank you for coming along to talk to me, I appreciate it a lot. Your portfolio is very impressive and I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together”
