It felt like it had been forever since she had gotten lunch with Hanna. Probably because it had been, what with Hanna’s kidnapping, Caroline ditching class to freak out about a possible dream!pregnancy and then her boyfriend’s dreams invading Orange County. She had still been going to school, work, and her other commitments but that was pretty much all she was doing. There was no sticking around to grab lunch with friends on campus, no hanging out with anyone. Now that it was all past it was time to get her social life back on track.
Caroline had fed before leaving for class, like usual, so she was fine without blood for a bit. She had a cooler in her car if she really needed some, but for now she was fine. Human food it was. She met Hanna in one of the cafe’s on campus. “How was your Valentine’s Day?” she asked as they sat down at a table. Damn, had it really been that long? Well she knew it had considering that’s when everything went to shit.
With everything that was going on, and the fact Hanna was definitely not as much with texting anymore thanks to the dreams, it wasn’t shocking to her that she was falling out of touch with people. Well no. She still paid attention to the network, but she was forever on edge about it or any sort of electronic communication. Always waiting for A to show up. Or waking up with a freaking note in her tooth and the general stress of the dreams… the fact she hadn’t completely snapped and got herself sent to Radley or Orange County’s version like she’d dreamt Spencer had… well, it was something.
But meeting up with friends (not tied to Rosewood, she loved Aria and Caleb but sometimes a girl needed a break from that drama and even if they focused on other things… well… Not to mention the whole Caleb leaving her for Miranda, that stung even if they’d gone over it in real life and it wasn’t what she thought) was definitely needed. Coffee in hand as well as the panini she had ordered, Hanna shrugged at the question about Valentine’s Day.
“Oh you know. Interrupted because of the bleeding sky and tidal waves, wrapping up with Caleb and me having the same dream about him staying in some creeptastic town to help some girl figure out her family only to wake up with him having a tombstone in it. So great. What about yours?”
Okay, so Hanna was a bit bitter. She dealt with it but still.
Caroline frowned at her first statement. She had a feeling the blood rain had ruined quite a few Valentine’s Days. No one deserved that. Especially Hanna and Caleb with all they have been through recently. And then she went on to talk about her weird dreams and tombstones. What the hell?
“Wait, wait, backup. Caleb isn’t in the same town as you anymore? And what about a tombstone?” Caroline asked taking a bite of her chicken wrap.
“About the blood rain and tidal waves,” Caroline began since Hanna had mentioned them and also asked about her Valentine’s Day. “They were actually from Peeta’s dreams.” She didn’t want to talk too much about her boyfriend’s dreams it wasn’t exactly hers to share. But she did trust Hanna and she deserved to know what happened. Plus it had a huge impact on Caroline’s Valentine’s Day the whole basically two weeks after. “So you know mine was ruined by that as well. I ended up spending it with him and some of his dream friends who are like a couple in the dreams I think but I don’t know what they are here” she shrugged. “And then spent the past two weeks at his apartment, saved his life three times. I swear I don’t know how he survived before me.”
“Nope. We went searching for Ali in this place called Ravenstown and it was super creepy and we needed Caleb to come help because there was like this...computer lair that was all creepily obsessed with Ali. He met this girl Miranda on the bus and said he’d help her with her family since she didn’t want to come back with us. But then something about a curse but he let me think he was cheating on me in the dreams and it’s a mess. But I was right about Ali being alive. No idea about the tombstone beyond it apparently dealing with whatever is keeping him in creep-o town.”
Well when there was an adjective that worked for Ravenswood? Might as well stick with it.
“OH! And Mister Fitz? Worse creep than we thought. So first we thought he was actually A, but no. He was just following us and dating Aria to get info on Ali and thinks one of us is A. As if we’d torture one another for the hell of it.”
Shaking her head in disgust, Hanna took a bite of her salad as Caroline then went to explain what had happened with the blood rain, and how it was from Peeta’s dreams. That was…
“What sick dream world deals with blood rain? Like. Yeah, yours is full of vampires which still weird to think about but whatever. But blood rain and all the creepy things that went on? God. That is a lot of life saving for the span of two weeks though, jeez. Obviously sheer luck is how he survived this long.”
That all sounded super confusing. It made no sense to Caroline why Caleb and Hanna would separate. They always seemed so… together. Well despite whatever the fuck Caleb did the previous month. But then she also wasn’t in their dreams so perhaps their relationship there was different. “So he cheated on you with that Miranda girl in the creepy tombstone town? And Ali is your friend that went missing and you all thought was dead right? So if she’s alive is she A?”
But then Hanna went on to say how they thought Ezra was A just as Caroline was taking a sip of her iced latte. She almost spit it out from the shock. “Um what the hell? That’s just creepy. So he was basically stalking all of you?” Caroline knew there was a reason she never liked the guy.
“Some real fucked up dreams,” Caroline commented with a sigh. “But yeah it was a pretty horrible few weeks. Although I have to admit I did like staying at his place that long.”
“That’s what dream me thinks is happening. Caleb says it’s not actually like that and it’s something about some curse or whatever that’s keeping him there. Whatever it is, it’s messed up.” Because really, how did you even try to explain that? It made Hanna bitter just to think about, which was difficult when seeing Caleb here while they were getting back to how they’d been before the whole thing with him leaving and her getting kidnapped. Hanna was so not a fan.
“Basically. And Ali’s apparently been on the run from A? We’re trying to find her to get actual answers. For once. But right?! So creepy.”
As Caroline said the dreams were fucked up, all Hanna could do was nod because what was there to say? The past two weeks or there about had been ridiculous with everything that had happened. No other description was necessary. “Sounds that way. But hey, that’s good you got to stay at his place? I mean, despite the reasoning.”
Not like Hanna knew much about Caroline’s living situation beyond the fact that there were four people in the house which was also ten shades of ridiculous.
“A curse, of course,” because that explained everything. But then Caroline kind of got how that was, there was magic all over Mystic Falls. Not really curses but there was this whole doppelganger fate thing that had meant Stefan and Elena were meant to be, but then it turned out to just be a spell. The whole situation was complicated and she had dreamed that forever ago, but she did get how magic could make things complicated. “Well I hope he gets rid of the curse and out of that weird town soon,” because really what else was there to say?
“So she’s not A and Professor Fitz isn’t A?” that’s basically what it sounded like. It was a little difficult to keep up.
“Yeah. I mean I stay there a lot already anyway. My place is starting to feel a little crowded. And then when I’m there,” she paused not sure how to phrase it. “It’s just stressful. I feel like I need to be there for them all the time,” as in her roommates. “Like I feel guilty for having a life outside of the house,” if that made any sense.
“So do I.” Even if it seemed like her dream self had decided that she was going to go to Ravenswood herself and get the truth from him. She just.. hadn’t done so yet so who knew how that would play out. Hanna just didn’t like it.
“Nope. So we still have no idea who’s stalking us.” So much headache. One of these days they’d find out and she’d be able to breathe. Or so the theory went.
But then Caroline was discussing how she felt when she was at home, but it didn’t sound good. The fact that she had to pause was a bad sign. “That’s not fair to you. You don’t need to feel guilty just because you have a life. No one should. What the hell?”
“Ugh that sounds horrible. My bad guys may have supernatural powers but at least we always know who is after us.” She couldn’t imagine how terrifying it would be to not know. It could literally be anyone even your best friend. In fact hadn’t Hanna told her that the original stalker had been her best friend? Yeah that was creepy.
“Yeah,” she frowned. It truly wasn’t fair to her. “Lexi’s cool,” she added because she usually left Caroline to do her own thing the others seemed to always need her for one thing or another. “I think they also forget that I have problems and dreams too. Which speaking of. Listen to this nonsense. I’m currently pregnant with my future fiance’s dead wife’s babies.”
That really was the worst of it. The not knowing. And given Hanna had already gone through the betrayal of her best friend ending up being the original A, it made her uneasy. And it was why the paranoia managed to bleed over so much. Because it was just as anonymous here even while knowing there was no reason for it to happen here. When there was an unseen threat….
“At least you have one cool one? But so not okay if they seem to think you don’t have problems and dreams too. We all do.” But then she was saying something about pregnant and a future fiancee with dead wives and all she could do was just...stare in Caroline in shock. “What sort of weird Twilight bullshit is this? Aren’t you a vampire? How does that even work?”
Caroline was usually the one to look on the bright side of things. To be there for her friends and support them however they needed. So of course they forgot that she had her own problems. She brushed off the dreams a lot of the time but that didn’t mean they didn’t bother her, that she didn’t worry about the outcome. Hell she had taken a pregnancy test because she had been so worried. “People get wrapped up in their own problems,” she tried to shrug it off but there was a hint of bitterness in her voice.
“It’s complicated?” she offered sheepishly before going into the full explanation. “This guy Alaric, who by the way was my high school history teacher and my college occult professor. He got this witch Jo pregnant and at their wedding she was killed. Her coven did some weird spell the put the babies into my womb. So viola. Pregnant vampire. It didn’t carry over though thank goodness.”
“Yeah, they do but that doesn’t make it okay to just… forget that you have problems and dreams as well.” Okay, so Hanna got it. She never looked out for herself when her friends were involved, putting everything aside for them. But that didn’t mean she had to be okay with Caroline feeling obviously bitter that people forgot about her feelings and problems as well. Not at all.
But then she was explaining and honestly, Hanna felt like her head was going to explode because what the actual hell? That made absolutely no sense to her.
“No kidding it’s complicated. But yeah. Definitely good it didn’t carry over because wow.”
There wasn’t really much else to say on the topic of her feelings being ignored. Because Hanna obviously wasn’t and she wasn’t going to go on and complain to the good friend she had sitting right in front of her.
Honestly she got how Hanna felt, trying to follow the fellow blonde’s crazy dreams made her head feel like it was going to explode too. Well, she could kind of follow all the A stuff although who was suspected of what got confusing, but when you added whatever that weird Ravenswood stuff was? Yeah Caroline had no idea what the hell Hanna was talking about. Not to mention she knew just how crazy and confusing her own dreams were.
“Right? I so don’t want to raise some dead ladies babies, thanks. But I didn’t even tell you the craziest part. So I dreamt I was pregnant. Woke up took a test and it was negative. Then a week later I had another dream where I took tests in the dreams and they all came back negative. Even had an ultrasound and nothing showed up. Until this other which realized there was a cloaking spell on my womb, took that shit off and then the babies showed up on the ultrasound. So of course I freaked out all over again. But I know a witch and she checked for me - no cloaking spell. So yup I’m really not pregnant here.” But really it was all just insanity.
There really wasn’t much to be said beyond Hanna wanting to go fight people but she had a feeling that wouldn’t be a good plan so… letting it drop for now seemed the plan. Obviously Caroline knew if she needed to talk, Hanna would listen and do what she could (assuming anything beyond listening were possible) so it was what it was.
Never did Hanna think she’d be thankful for her dreams but as confusing and complicated as they were? They still dealt with the real world where (barring Ravenswood apparently) curses and vampires and magic didn’t exist. Just creepy stalkers who were all knowing.
“... Well at least you know for certain? I don’t blame you for freaking out a second time though if it was in the dreams that it could be cloaked as well.” Because what else could she say? Her head was spinning and she had a feeling that now that Caroline was a bit removed from the initial panic, she was at least being coherent. Or as coherent as the situation allowed.
And Caroline would always do the same for Hanna. But yes there wasn’t much to be done at this point besides venting about it and now that she had she felt a little bit better about the whole thing.
“Yeah. No dream pregnancies for me. Or any for that matter.” She was way too young for that. Although technically she would be young forever and never able to have kids but she had already cried a little about all that. She wasn’t going to get into it again. “I think we should go out. This weekend. Try and forget about the dreams and the insanity they bring.” sounded like Hanna could use a night out as well with Ali being alive, Professor Fitz stalking her, still not knowing who the A person was and then Caleb apparently being in some creepy town.
There was something in Caroline’s voice but Hanna didn’t push it, just put it aside for future reference should it ever come up or it seemed to be something to worry about. It was strange to think, to not even have a choice in the matter but what could one do? So instead she focused on the second part. Going out that weekend. “God yes, I approve this plan a thousand fold.”
