Over the last couple of weeks Justin had been feeling kind of depressed, mostly as a result of the things that had happened with Billy and Teddy the previous year. He’d honestly thought that he was over the break up and that he wouldn’t be affected like this when the one year mark of when his relationship had begun to fall apart rolled around, but it had hit him harder than he’d expected. He honestly had no hard feelings towards Billy; he understood that things like feelings could bleed over from the dreams, because he felt things for Brian and he wasn’t even there. The person he did blame was Teddy. Teddy had known that Billy was having problems dealing with the feelings from the dreams and had basically preyed on Billy and used those feelings to his advantage in order to confuse Billy even more.
He knew that moping around was pathetic, but he couldn’t help it when Valentine’s Day had rolled around. Once the holiday was over and the strange things that had been going on in the County stopped, Justin decided that he needed to get back out and see his friends. He’d heard of a new exhibit at one of the art museums he liked so he’d decided to text Rapunzel and see if she would want to check it out too. He liked the blond artist and had enjoyed spending the day with her when she had come along when Danny had planned a day at Universal so it hadn’t taken him long to decide who he’d invite to come to the museum with him.
The day at Universal had been a lot of fun and Rapunzel was slowly discovering all the fun things around the area. She had done Universal and Disneyland now and she heard Magic Mountain was pretty neat. That would be on her list of things to possibly do with Laura for a date. So, when Justin texted her and asked her to go to a museum she was qutie happy to accept. The week and a half of OC craziness had taken its toll on her and she hadn’t been able to go out for long because she didn’t want to get caught in the blood rain.
She let him know that she would meet him at the museum and grabbed her bag with a sketchpad and pencils inside of it. Sometimes she got hit with inspiration while at a place like that, so she always liked to be prepared. She grinned to herself as she made her way out to her car and headed on over to the museum. Once there she picked up a ticket for herself and Justin because she had arrived before him and waited outside the entrance for him.
Justin also had one of his sketchpads with him; a new one that had no sketches of Billy inside. Sure, he could draw some at any time, but he was hoping that by using a brand new sketchpad, he’d be able to get over his ex completely. He’d thought that he was already over him, but apparently he hadn’t been quite as over him as he’d thought.
Reaching the museum, Justin spotted Rapunzel right away; after all, what other girls had that much hair? “Hey. How’s it going? Were you waiting long?” He adjusted the strap of his messenger bag on his shoulder as he stopped in front of her.
It wasn’t her fault that her hair continued to grow. It was getting a little longer every day and she wasn’t about to cut it because she wasn’t sure what would happen. Right now it was a little past her hips and it was still a bright blonde that made her easy to pick out in crowds. Wait until she attempted to put it up in some kind of updo, but for now it was down and she was watching the people wandering around the entrance to the museum and it was highly amusing. Easy to pick out the tourists, the stressed out moms, and the art students.
So, Justin surprised her slightly with his greeting and she lifted her head to look up at him with a smile, “Hey! And not too long. I’ve been people watching for just a couple minutes, so that was nice. Are you ready to go inside?” She hitched the strap of her own bag back onto her shoulder and gestured to the entrance.
Justin was extremely fascinated by Rapunzel’s hair. Sure, he’d seen other girls with long hair before, but Rapunzel’s hair was different and not just because it could apparently heal things, which he’d yet to actually see for himself, “Have you seen anything interesting?” Justin also liked people watching. He didn’t know if it was an artist thing or if they were just voyeurs. Either way, it could be highly entertaining at times and was often good opportunities for things to sketch. “I’m ready if you are.”
“Just a bunch of tourists trying to figure out what they’re doing. A lot of people have their noses in their phone or a map, so they have to double back once they realize that they’re at their destination,” Rapunzel commented with a smile and a small shrug, “Nothing too interesting. I was hoping for something dramatic, but alas.” She enjoyed being a voyeur and it was totally an artist thing because you couldn’t help but find things about people that you wanted to recreate through your favorite medium later on. “Let’s head in,” she answered as she started up the small steps into the main lobby for the museum and went over to the ticket counter.
“So no one has walked into anything or anyone?” Justin smirked and followed Rapunzel towards the ticket counter to redeem their tickets, “How boring.” Sure Justin used his phone often, but he still knew when to pay attention to what he was doing so that he wouldn’t walk into anything or anyone. “Those are the most amusing people to watch.”
“I wish, but alas,” Rapunzel countered with a laugh as she got their tickets sorted out and handed his over to him as they went up to the front door to get inside, “I almost wish there was a fountain or a hole for them to fall into or trip over, but it’s pretty open out there. I just wish people would lift their heads up and see the beauty of this building on the outside. But I can’t really say anything because I’m glued to my phone sometimes as well. But, at least we’re here on the inside and about to enjoy the art.” Thank goodness for that because otherwise Rapunzel would feel guilty for being an art student and not going into an art museum.
Justin laughed as their tickets were sorted then they headed inside, “If you want some good people watching, try the beach. You always end up seeing something interesting there.” Justin didn’t spend quite as much time at the beach as he would like, but he was going to change that once the summer rolled around. He was determined to do as much surfing this summer as he could, “One time last summer, I was sitting there, just randomly watching people, and this guy comes down onto the beach, sets up his stuff then wraps a towel around his waist and proceeds to change into his suit that way.” Justin had tried not to watch too intently, but a small part of him had kind of been hoping the towel would fall, because to be honest, the guy wasn’t horrible looking. Would have made for an interesting few moments.
“Oh god, that is a good idea. Too much sun and too little clothing leads to interesting scenarios,” Rapunzel pointed out with a laugh. She listened intently to Justin tell his story before getting a confused look on her face, “really? I can’t believe he didn’t just change before he got there. But props to him for managing to get his suit on without the towel falling off. You guys have it super easy, way harder for a girl to change like that.” She would have to make sure to add the beach to her list of plans for the summer. With a quick glance to her map she made a left and lead them into the newest exhibit of the museum that they had both wanted to see.
“I’ll admit, I watched for a little longer than I probably should have.” Justin smirked as he followed Rapunzel as she led them towards the new exhibit. “So, how’ve you been? You obviously made it through that shit last week.” He’d seen her post offering to help heal anyone who got caught in the fog, “I still don’t know why I stay here with all the shit that happens here.”
Her laugh grew louder as he added that comment and shook her head playfully with a smile. Well, if the guy was hot then she totally understood watching for a while. The question about the events of last week made her frown just slightly, “Ugh. It sucked. I avoided most of it, but Laura had an incident with the fog and I knew it was time to just hide in the house until it was over. What about you?”
“I stayed in when nothing really crazy was happening. I was able to do some of my work from home, given the situation.” Justin said as they walked through the museum, “I’m honestly not sure which part was more fucked up though. The blood rain, insane monkeys or poisonous fog. The news really had a field day with this one.”
“Yeah, it was awful to try and get to class when the blood rain was happening. A lot of classes ended up getting cancelled after the second day of it since it’s a bit of a health hazard. Laura came over and spent time with me, so at least I wasn’t stuck alone. And I have to say fog only because I dealt with it first hand. I was lucky enough to avoid the monkeys,” Rapunzel pointed out and she wanted to shudder at the idea of coming in contact with them. They finally arrived at the new exhibit and she let out a small breath, “Oh wow, this looks fantastic. The art is beautiful.”
“I don’t know why I continue to live here. There are so many other places that an artist can thrive in, but I choose to stay here with all the fucked up shit.” Justin noticed a woman give him a look as he swore, but he didn’t pay her too much attention, “Hopefully we can have some time without anything else happening. I just want a little normalcy for awhile.”
“That is a very good question. It certainly makes me question coming down here now,” Rapunzel had to admit that, but she wouldn’t run away just yet, “Besides, you know that you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. You’ve got some good friends around here, so you can’t go leaving us just yet. And don’t worry, I think some day there’ll be normalcy. You gotta have a little faith.” She playfully hit him with her shoulder as they walked over towards the benches, “Alright, you ready to soak in some inspiration and maybe draw a little?”
Justin smiled as he listened to Rapunzel and a found himself nodding in agreement, “You’re right. Just gotta wait it out. I’ve put up with it all for this long, so I might as well stay. Besides, if I went somewhere else I’d probably be bored out of my mind and always wonder what would have happening with me and Brian in my dreams.” It had been a few months now since Justin had had any dreams and he could just tell that there were more to come, but he didn’t know when that would happen.
Following her over to the bench, Justin nodded again, “I think that sounds like a great idea.” Sitting down, Justin pulled his sketchpad and a pencil out of his bag and flipped it open to a new page. They had more than enough time to hang out drawing for a little while and still see the entirety of the exhibit.
