High above Orange County, high above the world, he hung, floating in orbit, confused, concerned, and completely unsure what to do. He had found his powers growing, albeit a little more slowly lately, and he wasn’t sure why, save that he was waking up a lot less rested these days, like something bad was happening. He wished, most days now, that he could remember his dreams, and he found himself absolutely freaked out other days by the idea.
What if it also caused his memory of his past life in waking life to come back too? What if that meant his old personality came back, and replaced his current one? Would that be like dying? Would Conner Kent be wiped out, to be replaced by Kon-El? He didn’t know, but he knew he hated the way he feared it, and how the shadow of it hung over him, whenever he didn’t distract himself.
He was still getting occasional calls from his former self’s relatives. He would always refer them to his lawyers to be politely put off. He felt bad for them, but what was he supposed to do? He didn’t know them, didn’t have any feelings about them, and didn’t want to. He was not the man he had been before Kon-El died in that plane accident, and he felt like… he wanted to just be who he was now.
Which, apparently included the ability to breathe in next to no air conditions, as if there was a full atmosphere, flight, and incredible toughness and strength, not to mention the senses. His senses were growing stronger, enabling him to hear things miles and miles away, see things from way far away, and feel the letters on newspaper without looking. It was… weird.
Hovering in orbit of the Earth, staring down at Orange County, he could only wonder how much his life would continue to change, how much he would continue to change. Could he stop it? No one he had read about had been able to, and fewer than he had expected seemed to be interested in doing so. A few vocally wished they could, but not as many as he had thought, and it made him wonder. Maybe they all were meant to come here before the dreams, maybe they needed to be here to see and feel it all.
What did that mean? Who could be in charge of this whole mess? He talked to some, like Kate, who seemed to embrace who they were in the dreams almost as much as real life, and others seemed to try to ignore that part of their lives, or didn’t feel like it meant much here. Conner was still unsure how to feel about that, himself. He was obviously changing physically, but how would be react to more changes, and how far would he change?
He didn’t know if he could really ever understand what was happening, but he had even started trying to read about reincarnation and transmutation as beliefs, and high physics. Nothing so far chimed with this, but maybe if he kept reading he might learn something?
Conner groaned as he scrubbed his hands down his face, blinking away tears he didn’t even know he had been making.
He had to find a way to take charge of his life, to make decisions and make them stick. He was doing okay in classes, and he was enjoying those, learning at a fast pace and loving that part of his abilities. Maybe he should push himself in other ways, and learn just what he could do, entirely. It could be dangerous, but… it wasn’t just sitting around waiting. He even had an idea, now that he thought of it, who to ask for help. Conner grinned as he looked downward, then nodded.
It was time to make a plan and set out to do it. Time to get to work. With an effort of will, he flipped end for end, and shot downward, whooping as he hit full atmosphere hard, and aiming for Orange County. Time to go home.
