Magius settled to a bench to rest for a moment, shaking his head. The last few weeks had been a madness that had seemed to sweep the county. It had been as bad as few ever were. Not since the Blue Flu had he seen such rawness. If not for the efforts of fearless men and women around him, many more would have been lost or hurt far worse.
But things seemed to be normalizing, and he smiled, shaking his head.
Sometimes, he wondered why he had gotten into medicine, but when he saw some of the heroic actions of those around him, he knew he could never leave it behind.
He glanced up, only to see a face that made him smile. “Nina! How are you?”
It had definitely been a trying time lately but Nina had gotten so used to it now that it didn’t really phase her. She wasn’t entirely sure if that was a good or bad thing. She had enjoyed her time off over Valentine’s though and it had been harder coming back to blood rain than she’d expected.
Still the crazy weather and such seemed to be gone now and things were getting back to the status quo, though around here probably not for long.
“Magius, it’s good to see you” Nina said moving to sit down next to him, “I’m good thanks. You?”
Magius smiled to her, glad to see her and glad she was well. “I am doing quite well, actually. Just went home to do a drive by and kiss Luisa. My secret you see, is always seeing her, somehow, sometime, every day. She makes this all…” A hand waved around them as he spoke. “tolerable and even enjoyable, sometimes.”
He settled back more. “What has been going on in your life? Outside of putting in too many hours with the craziness?”
“That is quite possibly the sweetest thing I have ever heard. She’s a lucky lady you know” Nina said with a smile, he was one of the nicest doctors she’d ever worked with and she was always pleased when their shifts crossed over.
“Gabe and I actually went to Vegas for a late anniversary and Valentine’s combined, it was lovely. How about you? How are the wedding plans coming along?”
Magius grinned widely. “I think I am the lucky one. She works full time on her books and on promoting them and all, and she still makes time to make me feel like a million bucks. Somehow, she found me, and I feel like I will never stop thanking the Gods.”
He smiled at her words, then listened. “Yeah? Excellent! And we are slowly making plans, taking our time. We tend to just enjoy things as they happen, instead of rushing in.” He nodded. “We are a little bit slower than most, I think.”
“Her books are amazing, I have to admit I’ve read them all now and she’s an incredible writer. So perhaps you’re both lucky to have found each other as you’re an amazing doctor too” Nina said with a smile.
“As long as you’re happy I think that’s the most important thing” she replied with a shrug, “Take your time after all you only get married once”
“I still reread them, over and over. I’ve been a fan since before I met her.” He grinned a little grin, so in love he never knew what hit him. “Maybe so. You’re pretty darned smart.” He paused, then nodded. “Have you ever thought about going for a doctorate? I think you would be an amazing doctor.”
Magius nodded. “Exactly.”
“That is lovely, I’m jealous though you must get to read the new ones before they’re published” Nina said before blushing a little, “Thank you. I did want to be a doctor but it’s so expensive in the UK that I went into nursing instead. I have to admit I’ve considered it but another four years of school now is a little daunting” she admitted, and it was still expensive of course.
Magius nodded. “There are alternatives here, you know, including doing some time in actual doctoral assisting, and there are special scholarships here.” He himself would be tempted to foist a scholarship on her, secretly, of course, so she would never know or feel like she owed him. “If you ever wanted to pursue it, please let me know. I have a few friends in the right places.” He chuckled. “I taught many of those people who now make those decisions.” He had been around a long time, after all.
“I value you as a person and a medical professional, and I value having good doctors. Think about it, some time.”
Nina hadn’t realised that actually, she’d kind of shelved the idea as impossible. She loved her senior nurse position but it would be amazing to do what she’d dreamed of as a child. “I definitely will. Thank you, I truly appreciate it”
Magius would talk to Luisa about it, to make sure she was in the loop, and to make sure she was okay with him spending money on another woman, even a friend. But he nodded. This was the sort of thing money was designed to do. Help people, and help them help others.
“You’re welcome. What are friends for?”
Nina would definitely have refused had she known his intentions, she didn’t like being indebted to anybody even a friend. Luisa however would be in agreement with Magius, Nina was a good nurse and deserved the chance to be a great doctor.
“If there is ever anything I can do let me know” she said, “Even if it’s just making you a coffee on a rough shift” Not that it was anything close to possibly hooking her up with a scholarship.
“Of course.” Magius smiled. “You make lives better, including mine. You make this world a better place by being in it.” He smiled at her, glad to know this young woman.
“I love helping people, and I love being a doctor, even if I do sometimes wish to just be a resting man. I could never retire from it, though. Not when I have sources of inspiration like Luisa and you.” He nodded. He had found his muse, and his friends. And that made things so much better.
