Vanessa shut the door harder than she normally would, grabbing onto the steering wheel for a moment to try to steady her nerves and wait for her hands to stop shaking so that she could start the car. She was texting her boss when she got home to tell her that she wasn't coming in tomorrow. In fact she might just take off until all of this was done. The blood rain, the rumors of some creature, the fog and this thing with the voices - all of it was just wearing on her and she needed a break. She looked over at Nasir to give him a friendly smile after they were both settled in the car and opened her mouth to say something when she hear the voice from her backseat.
Vanessa jumped when she heard that voice from the backseat, too shocked to really pay attention to what it was saying, letting out a small scream before she could swallow it completely. She took a deep breath, counting to ten before turning to look in the back seat even though she knew there would be no one back there. She would have thought the back seat was empty, that somehow she was just experiencing whatever nightmare someone's dreams had brought to life for Nasir because she didn't know that voice, except for the little flicker of movement in the floorboard. She leaned into the backseat, fear turning into confusion as she realized it was a bird. "Nasir...is that the voice you were asking me if I heard? Because you're right there's no one back here but...have you ever seen a bird like this before?" There was still a little bit of fear in her voice as she stared at the bird in the back, a part of her not wanting to take her eyes off of it.
