It was practically the only free time either of the girls had. Anna was taking twenty-something units, and spent all of her free time studying, sleeping, or drinking Red Bull, and Caroline was going to school, working, and spending a ton of time with her boyfriend. Anna missed her roommate, but didn’t have much time to do anything about it. Except Valentine’s Day morning. She got up early and headed to the kitchen to make pink, heart-shaped pancakes for Caroline (and whoever else wanted some). This was Anna’s “Galentine’s” celebration.
But the pancakes came out pretty strange. None of the hearts actually looked like hearts, and some of them were burned on one side and practically raw on the other. In any case, Anna thought they looked… edible… and brought a plate to knock on Caroline’s bedroom door.
Caroline spent most weekends at Peeta’s place but they were spending the day apart until their Valentine’s date that night. She had to work too, Valentine’s day was a busy time. She was just finishing getting ready when there was a knock on her door.
She couldn’t help but smile when she opened it and saw Anna standing outside. “Happy Valentine’s Day!” she greeted her friend happily before noticing the plate in her hand with.. well Caroline wasn’t sure what was on it. They kind of resembled pancakes? “What’s that?” she asked nodding at the plate.
“Happy Valentine’s Day!” Anna replied, grinning brightly. She held up the plate. Instead of looking sheepish, she acted playfully. “What, don’t you recognize heart-shaped pancakes when you see them?” But then a little laugh escaped her. “At least, that’s what I tried to make this morning.”
“Heart-shaped pancakes I’d recognize,” Caroline replied with a laugh. “I have no idea what these are,” she teased stepping out of her room and walking into the kitchen with Anna. Sorry but she wasn’t going to attempt to eat those pancakes. It was sweet but they didn’t look appetizing. Instead she got a pot of coffee started and grabbed a blood bag out of the fridge in the meantime. “Have any exciting plans tonight?”
“I’m doing something with Lexi, I think? Galentines, or something like that.” Anna moved over to the trash and dumped the plate in. She had Pop Tarts in the cupboard that she could have for breakfast. Anna didn’t feel like having a bout of food poisoning for Valentine’s Day. “Are you and Peeta doing something special?”
“Ah that sounds fun! I almost wish I didn’t have a boyfriend so I could join you guys,” she teased. As much as she liked spending time with Peeta she didn’t like being left out of things especially with her friends. But oh well, it would probably be worth it. “He has something planned. Dinner and dancing I think. I’m supposed to meet him at his place later today.”
Anna snorted. “I think I’d take the boyfriend over Galentine’s Day, but that’s just me.” She gave her friend a wink, then moved to start loading things into the dishwasher. They didn’t go through a whole lot of dishes, but somehow the thing was always full. Or almost full. It was like cramming things into a thing that was already over-crammed with things. “That sounds really sweet! I’m sure you’ll have a great time. What are you going to wear?”
“Next year?” Caroline suggested just as the coffee was ready. She poured them each a mug. “Maybe next weekend we can start looking? Go to a club!” She could be a wing woman. She had done it for Elena a few times and she was all for meeting a guy at a bar or club. Worked for her. “I haven’t decided yet. Want to help me pick out a dress?” She did already pick out the lingerie but that was a different story, that was his Valentine’s Day present after all.
“Oh, I dunno. I feel like… like I fall into things way too fast. I should really be more guarded. I don’t want to be like my dream self, suffering a frozen heart, nearly dying because I put my faith in the wrong person.” Anna wasn’t sure there was a right person. Not anymore. “We can always go out! But I’m not like… on the prowl. You know? I’ve got too much homework to worry about boys, too.” She brightened considerably. “Yes! I’d love to! After breakfast?” She held up her half-eaten pop tart.
Caroline could understand that. Hopefully Anna was more guarded with her heart next time she met someone. That didn’t mean she couldn’t have some fun in the meantime though. “Next weekend then,” she said with a smile. Maybe if Anna saw just how many options there were out there it would help her from falling for just one so fast. “Actually do you mind if we do it after work? I should really get going.” Although if Anna was already busy with the Galentine’s thing then Caroline could always pick something out herself.
“Yeah, no problem. Don’t let me keep you from work! I’ll see you after.” Anna said, grinning. Then she turned to head back into her bedroom. She could take a shower and get dressed, then do some homework before lunch.
