Who: Peeta and Caroline What: Getting caught in the fog Where: Local store When: Today (2/20) - morning Rating: PG-13 (Peeta is given vampire blood) Status: Complete
This might be one of the worst weeks of Peeta’s life. The horrors of the Arena had taken over Orange County and Peeta was trying to deal with it as best as he could. But that didn’t stop him from waking up gasping and covered in sweat multiple times a night as he relived the events of the Quarter Quell inside his dreams. Having Caroline around to keep his sanity was a godsend, but he honestly wasn’t sure how much more he could take before he finally snapped thanks to all this. No one should have to relive this twice and no one in the OC deserved to go through this. He was just thankful that it seemed like no one was actually out to kill them (yet), so it wasn’t a true Hunger Games. There didn’t have to be a single winner; they all just needed to survive.
It had been somewhat tame until the monkey mutts had shown up the day before and Peeta had to fight his way from his bakery to his car. Why he was running it while this was going on made no sense, but it gave him a sense of calm, but now he was considering just hiding away in his apartment. This morning seemed to be quiet, which only masked the horrors that could possibly be happening, and he really did need to go out and get groceries. “Care? You ready to get up? I think we should try to make it to the store before something happens,” he spoke softly as he turned from his position at the window.
Ever since Valentine’s day Caroline had been worried about her boyfriend. She wasn’t sure what she would do if anything from her dreams decided to invade Orange County. He seemed to be having nightmares about it every night too. She wasn’t sure how to help him but there was no way she was leaving him. Of course she was going to stay with him as long as everything was going on and possibly longer. It was her turn to support him, which was precisely why when she had another pregnancy dream she had kept it from him and dealt with it on her own. She’d tell him about the cloaking spell and how hadn’t crossed over eventually but for now all she wanted to do was be there for him.
Caroline was half awake when she heard Peeta say her name, well she spent most of her nights half awake or just getting a few hours of sleep because she was on high alert in case he needed anything. “Yeah,” she replied opening her eyes fully. “Let me just get dressed,” she leaned over to give him a kiss before climbing out of bed.
The kiss was returned before he broke it and moved to get some clothes on. As he dressed he made sure to place some of the knives that he had taken from the cornucopia once he realized awful things were actually starting to happen around here and he refused to be caught without anything to defend himself. It came in quite handy when he and Gale fought the monkeys, so now it was just habit. He placed a t-shirt over his head and tugged it down as he turned to watch her, “I’m not sure if anything is going to happen today, but just in case. I feel like I’m turning into a paranoid freak waiting for something to happen.”
Caroline got dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, pulling her hair up into a ponytail. She didn’t bother to apply any make-up. They were just going to the store and it seemed like Peeta was kind of in a rush to go before anything else happened. She did notice that Peeta grabbed a few knives. She didn’t have any weapons herself. She didn’t really use them in the dreams or here. She didn’t need them with her abilities. So he could handle the whole weapons thing. “You aren’t,” she assured him. “Well at least not a freak,” she teased. “I think everyone who was going through what you are would be paranoid. I’m not even sure if it counts as paranoia if shit is really happening either,” hopefully her words were helping. “Now come on let’s go.”
“Aw, thanks, no wonder I like you so much,” Peeta commented dryly with a grin as he pulled her in for a quick kiss. After breaking the kiss he pressed his lips to her hair and stayed there for a moment. He was just a little nervous about this, but he wasn’t going to let that get in the way of enjoying Caroline. Nothing bad would happen. No one was out to kill him to be the winner of a fucking game. This was going to be fine. “Alright, let’s get out there and get some food. I mean, you should be good with blood right? I got some in that bowl during the last rain.” He went to grab his keys and an umbrella just in case as they exited the apartment.
Caroline would have been more than happy to just stay there like that. Even though she was basically immortal she always felt safe with Peeta. And no way in hell would she ever let anyone kill him either. She’d snap their necks without hesitation, just like she did with those weird ass monkeys. “Yes,” she told him with a small laugh. “Blood’s all I need, but I wouldn’t object if you wanted to bake something.” And there was the fact that he needed food too. Blood wasn’t exactly on his diet. “It’s going to be okay,” she told him grabbing onto his hand and giving it a squeeze as they headed out to his car.
“I can definitely bake something for you. Come up with what you want while we drive over there and we can find the ingredients at the store,” he returned the squeeze as he locked up and down to the parking lot they went. Once he stepped outside he took a look around and everything seemed normal as could be as they got to his car. And everything remained normal as they drove to the grocery store down the road. It wasn’t until they exited the car near the back of the parking lot, apparently everyone wanted to stock up, and began to walk to the store that Peeta felt the hair on the back of his neck rise.
Caroline really didn’t care what he baked, everything he made was delicious. Maybe a cake. It’d probably hit her once they got in the store and she saw something. The ride wasn’t very long and soon enough they were at the store. Caroline was a few steps ahead of Peeta as they headed for the store. It seemed a little foggy, but that was no big deal. There was no blood falling from the sky making her face go all vampy. Fog was nothing. It was moving kind of fast though. Faster than fog usually traveled. As far as Caroline knew at least. And then it hit her. She let out a yelp of pain as it burned her skin causing boils to form. What the hell? This felt worse than her dream memories of getting hit by the sun without her ring.
There wasn’t a care in the world as he made his way towards the store with Caroline and suddenly all that shattered when he noticed the fog. It was too late to stop Caroline however because soon enough her scream shattered the calm. But he couldn’t move. He was stuck where he was as the horror of watching Mags die in the Arena flashed in front of his eyes. It was only when the fog managed to touch his skin that he was finally able to do something. “CAROLINE,” he yelled as he quickly checked his surroundings to try and see where they could get to safety before going into the fog to get her and crying out at his burns.
Caroline almost forgot that she was with Peeta, the pain took over. But the second she heard his yell she snapped back to reality. This fog was hurting her and Peeta. She needed to get the hell out of it, she would heal. But Peeta? She needed to get him out. She was in too much pain to use her vampire speed. She could barely move. She turned, moving towards him and grabbed his hand, moving as fast as she could, making a beeline for the car. The fog broke just a few yards away from it. They had to get inside, fast.
It felt just as horrible as it had been in the Arena and Peeta fell to his knees. He felt like he was going to probably end up dying right here, but thankfully Caroline was superhuman. And while it was still managing to affect her she had more strength than he did in this moment, which he didn’t realize until he felt her grabbing his hand to pull him towards the car. He managed to get back up off the ground and stumbled over his feet as they tried to get out of the fog. She would manage to heal once they got out of the fog, but he wasn’t going to have that luxury.
Once the fog broke Caroline started to heal immediately. But Peeta wasn’t. And the fog was still creeping up behind them. She needed to get him in the car and fast. She reached into his pocket to pull out the key pressing the button to unlock the car. She had no idea if her abilities would return now that she was healed but she had to try. She picked up Peeta easily, carrying him over her shoulder with one hand. Strength back, check. And then vamp speeded the last few feet to the car. Not that it was far away but it gave them some time to out run the fog a bit. With her free hand she opened the door setting Peeta down on the passenger seat slamming the door shut behind him so the fog couldn’t get in. Then super speed around to the driver side climbing in herself and slamming the door behind her.
Wasting no time she bit into her wrist. It was like a reflex she didn’t even realize she was doing. “Drink!” she commanded shoving her bleeding wrist in front of his mouth. “You have to be okay!”
His entire body was burning as the poison of the fog spread its way into his body. This wasn’t going to be how he died and he was doing his best to try and fight through all of this. But there wasn’t much he could do because he didn’t have the powers to heal like his girlfriend. Thankfully she was the type of supernatural that could assist him with his healing even though he was floating in and out of consciousness at this moment and didn’t even register her biting into her own wrist. When the wound was pressed to his lips he wasn’t sure what to do, but the smell was overwhelming and he could tell that he needed to drink what was in front of him and he did. A hand reached out to hold her wrist as the healing blood made its way into his system and he slowly began to heal.
There was no way in hell Caroline was going to let Peeta die. She couldn’t lose him. This was one of the scariest moments of her life. She could feel Peeta start to drink from her and while that was a good sign she wasn’t relieved yet. She wouldn’t be until he was okay. “Keep drinking,” she told him. “You’re not allowed to get all hurt on me.”
Her words only drove him on to continue to drink and heal himself. He wasn’t going to die anytime soon. He gripped her wrist a little tighter and he could feel his body begin to relax a little as the burns from the fog finally began to disappear of his body. The effects of the blood made his mind swim as he finally released her arm and took a couple raspy breaths, “You saved me…”
When Peeta’s burns faded away Caroline could finally be a little relieved. Her blood worked, he would be okay. As soon as he released her wrist the wound healed, puncture marks from her fangs disappearing. “I wasn’t going to let you die.” Duh, Peeta. “I love you,” well that was something she wasn’t expecting to come out her mouth. She had known for a week now, since her pregnancy dreams, but still saying it out loud. That was scary.
Those words washed over him and he couldn’t help but smile as he reached over to pull her to him and kissed her passionately. It hadn’t been a long relationship, but he knew that he loved Caroline because they had been through so much together. She had saved him and she wasn’t running away at the fact that his dreams were absolute shit. He pulled away to rest his forehead against hers with a smile and spoke softly, “I love you too, Caroline.”
Well that kiss certainly proved he was okay. Her emotions instantly went from terrified of losing Peeta to complete happiness as she returned the kiss, a smile on her face when he pulled away. His words only caused her smile to widen. Falling in love was still scary for her and it had happened fast but she trusted Peeta wouldn’t hurt her. Instead of saying anything she pulled him in for another kiss. Things were going to be okay, even with all the shit they had recently been through. They could get through it, together.
