Who: Laura and Rapunzel What: Going for supplies and get caught in the fog Where: Grocery store parking lot When: Today (2/20); afternoon Rating: PG-13 Status: Complete
First there’d been the blood rain, and then the lightning and the monkey-like creatures. Laura had slept rarely, spending more and more time on the streets trying to help people where she could, though much time was spent holed up at home (or Rapunzel’s) and watching the rain.
But today had been quiet. Nothing out of the ordinary so far and thankfully no raining blood. She decided to hazard going out and getting some groceries so her girlfriend didn’t actually starve.
“I’m going out, you’re out of...everything.”
This was almost as bad as the last thing that had happened with Henry’s dreams coming to life. At least there wasn’t scary fog outside and voices coming from inside her apartment. Even though she had told Henry it wasn’t her fault it had still creeped her out and sometimes she couldn’t fall asleep right away because she thought she could hear the whispering. But having Laura around always made her feel more safe and she was more than willing to hole up with her to stay away from the craziness.
“I know I am. You eat a lot,” she teased with a smile as she kissed Laura’s cheek, “I can come with you if you want.”
Laura actually felt torn. On one hand she liked being the thing that kept Rapunzel’s nightmares away. She had so often felt like she was the nightmare that being that person for her girlfriend made her really happy. But she also thought that she was supposed to move in with her father. Even if he didn’t think he needed anyone, she still thought he needed someone. Laura didn’t really know what to do.
“We’re out of beer too.” Like that was the most horrifying thing. Laura came over and put her arms around Rapunzel. The other amazing thing (at least to her) was how easily Rapunzel made her forget everything else. The blonde just needed to smile at her and it got Laura’s motor running. She’d never experienced anything quite like it. “You can come, I’ll feel better knowing you’re nearby.”
The nightmares would go away eventually once Rapunzel managed to move on from the idea. They had been getting better and she assumed she would just grow out of it, but Logan definitely needed someone. The death of someone close to you was never good and Rapunzel expressed to Laura that maybe that was the better thing to do. It was totally fine with her and she wouldn’t be offended at all. Laura spent a lot of time at her place anyway, so maybe she could return the favor and sleep over at Logan’s occasionally - fill his place with a little more optimism.
“You sound so much like your father,” she pointed out with a laugh as she snuggled in against her girlfriend. Rapunzel had never really been in love like this before and she was so pleased that she made Laura so happy. The two of them fit together quite well in that aspect of the relationship, “Goodie. I’ll need to put some pants on though.”
Laura took it like a compliment, and beamed at Rapunzel. As much as she’d set out to be her own person, she still wanted to honor Logan’s legacy. And he damn well better stay alive while she did that here. When she’d dreamed he’d died …. there had been yelling. A lot of yelling and hugging.
She groped Rapunzel’s ass. “I like you without pants.”
A soft moan escaped Rapunzel’s lips as she couldn’t help but chuckle as she moved slightly to straddle Laura’s lap. “I know you do, but we really should get out there and get some food,” so to be an awful tease she gently rolled her hips towards Laura and then wiggled off of her girlfriend. A playful smile was on her face once her feet were on the floor, “We’ll never get going if I let you have your way with me. This way, I can try and see how fast we can make it through the grocery store in order to make it back home.”
“Nnn…” Laura reached for Rapunzel but she was no longer in contact with her. Rapunzel made everything hazy in a good way. But they really should get going. “What if you wanted to have your way with me?” Either outcome was an acceptable one as far as she was concerned.
She got to her feet, smoothing her fingers through her hair, then shrugged her leather jacket on. “I can resist you. Promise.”
“You can resist me? Now that’s just mean. And don’t worry, I’ll have my way with you later,” Rapunzel commented with a giggle as she padded back to her bedroom to put some pants on and look more presentable. After shimmying into her jeans she came back into the living room to Laura and smiled, “How do you want to get to the store? If we have a lot of stuff we should probably take the car.”
The saddlebags could take a lot, but Rapunzel was right about the car. Besides, if it rained blood then they wouldn’t get soaked in it. She had her bike under the stairs with a covering over it. “Car. In case it rains blood again.”
She held out her hand for Rapunzel to take. “Lets make this quick.”
“Sounds good,” she nodded as she took Laura’s hand and followed her out of the apartment. It was a good idea to be able to protect themselves from the blood rain, which was just gross and annoying more than anything. She pressed the button to unlock the car as they moved closer to it.
Laura opened the door to let Rapunzel in. Luckily there weren’t many people on the roads, but when they got to the store she had to park farther away than she would have liked. “I think everyone else had the same idea. It is like they’re preparing for the apocalypse.” She looked at the sky worriedly as she got out of the car.
“It almost feels like the end of the world,” Rapunzel agreed with a nervous laugh as they parked and got out of the car, “I’m not surprised the grocery store is busy because people need to eat.” It was a little eerie though because it almost seemed like everyone sprinted to the store as fast as they could and were taking their time in a shelter before coming out with their groceries.
If there was an umbrella, Laura was buying it. She took Rapunzel’s hand so they could walk to the store. She didn’t sprint, wanting to conserve energy in the event that they actually really needed to run. Then she smelled something strange in the air, her sensitive nose picking up something almost metallic and tangy. She looked around for the source. “Something is wrong…” She gripped Rapunzel’s arm as a rolling, mist-like fog rapidly wafted towards them. Laura’s nose started to sting as it passed Rapunzel’s and she pushed her girlfriend. “Go!”
Rapunzel would never doubt Laura’s ability to smell things and she was thankful for it when suddenly they stopped in the middle of the parking lot. That grip on her arm meant that it wasn’t going to be a pleasant thing that Laura was smelling and she gasped aloud when she was pushed. “What?!” She wasn’t going to leave Laura by herself, but she did notice that fog that was coming towards them and she stumbled backwards, “I’m not going to leave you!”
“I’m not staying behind,” Laura assured her. She pushed at Rapunzel again and started to run, but she always kept herself between Rapunzel and the mist. Mist couldn’t be stabbed or kicked or punched. But they could run away. Maybe the store would be safe. Maybe it would be a death trap. But it was the only place they could go.
Oh god. She could see the boils beginning to form on Laura’s skin as the fog touched her and Rapunzel let out a bit of a yelp. This was not supposed to be happening! Was there a monster inside this fog as well? She stumbled slightly again as she did her best to run towards the store as fast as she possible could. It had to be able to block them, right? As long as the doors stayed closed the fog shouldn’t be able to get in.
It hurt, like being burned. Laura shoved her girlfriend into the store and then stopped so that the doors would close between them as she realized she didn’t want to let the fog in and she couldn’t outrun it. Some it might still leak inside, but she grabbed the metal frame of the door, using her considerable strength to keep it from opening again. She coughed as the fog got into her lungs and burned them, her body spasming as boils erupted all over her skin. “Lock… door. Stay away from door!” Though she knew that there were too many loose seals in the door to keep anything out,she still hoped it would be enough. The pain was excruciating and she didn’t want anyone to die like this.
She just hoped that someone inside heard and understood her, but she needed have worried - the fog stopped right at the door and went no further. She collapsed to the ground as the fog began to pull away, every bit of her skin blistered. She twitched once, then stopped moving.
It was one of the most horrific things that Rapunzel had ever had to witness. She couldn’t believe that Laura had pushed her inside of the store and allowed herself to stay out there with the fog. She followed the instructions to lock the door and she took a few steps back, but she wasn’t going to let Laura do this all by herself. The moment Rapunzel realized that the fog wasn’t going to penetrate the door she rushed up to the glass and began to scream as Laura was consumed.
No. This couldn’t be happening. Laura wasn’t supposed to die like this and Rapunzel refused to be inside of here safe and sound. She pounded on the glass as she screamed her girlfriend’s name before collapsing on the floor and crying. Could Laura come back from something like this or was she truly gone? Rapunzel had no answers as she rocked back and forth and wished she was out there.
The fog retreated, leaving a multitude of dead pigeons behind, and a motionless Laura. But just moments later, she suddenly spasmed and jerked, gasping desperately for air. Her skin started to slowly heal. It would take several minutes for it to all clear up and it was painful, but for the moment she was breathing.
Rapunzel managed to look up in time to see Laura’s body begin to heal itself and she quickly gathered herself to throw the doors open and run outside to be beside Laura. She knelt down on the ground and lowered herself enough so that she could get her hair on Laura’s body and began to sing.
Laura almost wanted to push her away, a stubborn part of her that didn’t want to rely on anyone when she could handle herself. But she was too weak anyway, and started coughing as her lungs and skin pushed out the toxin.
“Youkay?” That had been too close, and she opened her eyes to make sure Rapunzel was all right. The last thing she wanted was to lose her. She’d seen what losing someone had done to Logan. It was depressing enough that Laura occasionally had to talk herself out of leaving for Rapunzel’s own good.
If Laura had attempted to pull her away Rapunzel probably would have railed against her. It would have cut her deeply if something like that had happened because the only thing she could do for anyone was try and heal them. She wasn’t immortal like Laura and she just wanted to be of some use and not just a liability around this crazy place.
“Physically, yes, but not so much mentally,” Rapunzel commented as she cupped Laura’s cheek and looked down at her girlfriend, “Are you going to be okay? That was awful to watch.” This place needed to stop doing things like this that got people hurt. Couldn’t it just be a normal place.
“I’m sorry.” Laura forced herself to sit up. The immediate danger had passed, and though her skin was still red in places the combined effects of her powers and Rapunzel’s healing had taken away the worse of it. At least her jacket was okay. She’d go to extreme lengths to save it. “I’ll be fine. Thanks for helping. That was worse than being on fire.”
“Oh god, I can’t even imagine,” Rapunzel’s face fell at the idea of her girlfriend on fire as she helped Laura sit up, “I don’t think we should go grocery shopping right now. Or at least you should go lay in bed to recover while I do it.” She wasn’t going to chance anything right now and she wanted to make sure that Laura healed properly.
“I don’t want you out of my sight,” Laura said. There might be worse than the fog out there. Those monkey things could return. At least she could kill those. “But we should go home.” She didn’t know if anything was open but maybe they could grab a couple tv dinners before they left.
“We can run into the store, I’ll get you one of those electric carts,” Rapunzel suggested as she smoothed out Laura’s hair and held her close to her, “Stock up and we’re not leaving the house until this damn shit is over.” She was not going outside if something like this was going to happen. She would be much better off hiding out with Laura and making sure she was well again.
“Other people might need help,” Laura said, leaning her head on Rapunzel’s shoulder. That was the conflict within her. Wanting to help, always wanting to help as though the blood and tears on her hands from the dreams had stained her waking life. But also knowing that she didn’t have anything to prove, but wanting to help anyway. Maybe that was what made someone a hero.
She offered a compromise. “We stock up. And offer shelter to any who need it.”
“That sounds perfect,” Rapunzel gave her a smile as she helped Laura get off the ground and up to standing. She was more than happy to help take care of other people. The dreams had given her this ability for a reason and she wanted to make sure to use full advantage of it if people needed her. They were cut from the same cloth, but for different reasons, and she was glad to have someone like Laura in her life. They would stock up and post on the network to assist anyone that needed it.
Laura squeezed Rapunzel’s hand. She didn’t intend on letting go until they got home, and then she had other plans, the kind that typically involved life-affirming love-making. She had to make sure Rapunzel hadn’t been hurt, after all.
