Caleb’s life never seemed to settle the fuck down. If it wasn’t his past getting in the way it was the dreams. Sometimes not even his own dreams. Orange County seemed to be undergoing some weird ass weather where it was literally raining blood. If that wasn’t enough to ruin his first Valentine’s day with Hanna, their shared dream about some weird ass town called Ravenswood sure was. And you know, waking up to his gravestone.
The blood rain seemed to have stopped and Caleb was long overdue for a drink. And who better to drink with than Peter? Even if the guy was still technically underage. So was Hanna and that didn’t stop him from drinking with her. Maybe he was a bad influence? Oh well. Drinks it was.
By the time he had finished filling Peter in on everything that had been going on the past few days he was already on his third drink. Damn, was his life really that crazy or was he just drinking faster than usual? Whatever. “And of course we have been having freak weather,” he concluded. “What about you, man? Anything crazy going on other than the sky apparently bleeding?”
Blood rain had not been something that Peter was expecting to ever happen while he was alive. It seemed like something straight out of a horror movie or something involving a lot of witches and curses. Even his dreams didn’t have something like this and he was a boy who never grew older. He spent a lot of time hearing complaints from the customers at the coffee shop, so he was more than ready to have drinks with Caleb. It didn’t matter that he was just shy of this twenty-first birthday because he had always been the type to have a fake ID at the ready.
The details of Caleb’s dreams were insane and Peter was incredibly thankful for his mild dreams. Fighting pirates and saving Wendy seemed easy enough to him and he didn’t have to worry about kidnappers, ghosts, and gravestones. He was more than happy to continue the drinking because they both needed something in their system to even begin to understand what was going on around here. “Yeah, this is weird. I’ve never seen a place rain blood down. I mean, isn’t that incredibly unhygienic? I don’t have too much crazy going on with me, just working, and dreaming about Neverland. I’ve been working on flying, but the blood has put a damper on that for the moment,” Peter explained after taking a sip of his drink.
“Yeah I definitely wouldn’t want to fly in this.” It was still weird to him that Peter could actually fly. But he knew people had dreams that were supernaturally. He was starting to get experience of that first hand with his new dreams about Ravenswood. He’d take Rosewood and A over that shit any day. “But it seems to have cleared up now,” or well at least for now. Who knew how long the rain would actually be gone. “I need to see those flying skills of yours,” he was only half joking as he finished off the rest of his drink. Because really he did want to see Peter fly.
“I mean, it’s probably great for those that are vampires now, but the rest of us don’t want to be caught in that kind of rain,” Peter couldn’t help but chuckle and wondered if any of the vampires on the network were taking advantage of the free blood that was pouring from the sky, “And I don’t look good covered in blood. It’s also making work incredibly boring. As for seeing my flying skills, you definitely can. I also have some pixie dust, so I could possibly get you to fly as long as you can come up with happy memories.” That was really the only stipulation to flying using pixie dust and it seemed to work for most people. Hopefully Caleb had a stash of happy memories now that things had quieted down for him.
Caleb hadn’t really thought about the whole vampire aspect. But then that wasn’t something that crossed his mind often. “I’m not sure anyone looks good covered in blood,” he commented with a smirk. Oh right, of course flying required pixie dust and happy thoughts. Made all the sense in the world to him. Caleb didn’t have a ton of happy memories but there were some. Mostly that took place over the past few months. “Seriously?” he wasn’t going to lie he did want to at least try this flying thing. “Well what are we waiting for then? Let’s go before it starts raining blood again.”
“Seriously. I took Wendy out once when she was here and I think she really enjoyed it. It only lasts for a short period of time and I’m not using it all up on you,” Peter gave him a wink and a grin, “But it’ll be fun. We just need to find a good place that not everyone will see us. Don’t need to be reported to the cops for flying around. But we can totally go.” He lifted his glass to his lips to drain it and there was a mischievous look in his eyes at the prospect of taking Caleb out to fly around. It would be a lot of fun. Once his drink was finished he fished out a couple extra dollars and threw them on the bar as a tip.
Caleb threw some money down on the bar too and then out they went. “Lead the way. Can you drive?” Caleb had had a few drinks, he could probably still drive but he wasn’t entirely sure it would be legal. But there was also the fact that he had no clue where the hell a secluded spot to fly would be.
“Yeah,” Peter had a little less than Caleb to drink because he took longer on his drinks. Caleb needed more since he was the one telling Peter about how awful his dreams had been. Peter did a quick mental check to make sure he was good and nodded, “I can drive. I know a good place to go and it’s pretty quick to get over there. He fished his keys out of his pocket and made his way with Caleb to where his car was parked, “There’s a good park with lots of trees. Usually people leave you alone and it’s easy to hide if anyone comes over.”
“How often do you do this?” Caleb asked as they headed to the car. He was still getting used to the fact that Peter just went flying. But then it was probably a normal thing for his friend. “Not gonna lie, I’m a little jealous. It’d be cool to get some kind of power from these damn dreams instead of having to worry about my girlfriend being stalked. And now some weird ass death pact.” But really he needed to stop thinking about all that and focus on happy things apparently if he was going to try and fly. So that’s what he tried to do for the ride to Peter’s flying spot.
“At least once a week. I fly around my house for fun sometimes,” Peter explained with a laugh as they reached his car and they got inside, “It’s a lot of fun. I am almost to the point where I hate that I have to walk like a normal person and can’t just go flying all over. And are you sure you’re jealous? Your death pact sounds super.” He made sure his voice had a heavy teasing tone to it and he shot his friend a lopsided grin as they drove to their destination. Once outside of the park Peter slowed down to maneuver into the parking lot, “Alright, just a bit of a walk from here.”
Caleb couldn’t help but laugh at the thought of Peter flying around his house. “Is there enough space for that? I can just see you bumping into all the walls,” he smirked at that. “Oh yeah. Super fun. Who wouldn’t want some supernatural curse on them and four other people?” Sarcasm, clearly. “But I don’t know I think you should fly around everywhere,” now it was Caleb’s turn to tease as he climbed out of the car. “Give the citizens of Orange County something to look at.”
“I’ve made a dent in the ceiling,” he had to at least admit that. Flying in a small space wasn’t ideal, but it made it fun in the morning to fly from his bed to the kitchen. The comment about the supernatural curse made him laugh as he got out of the car and locked it up, “Maybe I should. I could be like a new age Superman that everyone wants to report on. Alright, it’s just a bit of a walk up the path into the more forested area. It looks like everyone is staying away thanks to the weather lately. should make it easier on us.”
Again Caleb couldn’t help but laugh as he pictured Peter running into his ceiling hard enough to make a dent. “Imagine people’s excitement, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…. who is that?” Caleb mocked. “Aren’t we going to run into trees?” he asked as they walked up the path. Well maybe Peter wouldn’t, but Caleb had a feeling he would. If this even worked. “All right so how do we do this?” he asked when it looked like they reached the area. That was until he heard a strange noise. It sounded like some type of animal. “Did you hear that?” he snapped his head around different directions looking for whatever caused the noise.
“You can fly under them or go right up through the tops. It doesn’t hurt much to fly through the leaves and branches,” Peter lead him to the middle of a patch of trees and dug the bag of pixie dust out of his pocket. He was just about to explain how they did this when he heard something that sounded like a branch snapping. A confused expression passed over his face as he looked around and tried to place it, “Huh...that’s odd. I don’t see anyone around here? Okay, back to business. I’m going to make you think of your happy though, then I sprinkle this on you, and then you can fly.” He stepped towards Caleb and drew a pinch of dust out of the bag.
“Uh, okay,” Caleb replied still a bit unsure about this whole thing. He wasn’t sure how some dust and happy thoughts were going to make him fly, but he trusted that Peter knew what he was doing. He stood in place and thought about his first date with Hanna, that was a pretty damn happy memory, while Peter sprinkled the dust on him. “Now what?” Caleb asked just as his feet began to float up off the ground. “Ohhh.”
It was always the best to watch someone fly for the first time. The disbelief fell away to bring out pure childlike excitement. Caleb was totally in that moment and he watched as Caleb began to float upwards. “Just try acting like you’re swimming, it’ll help move you along. It’s a little strange at first, but you’ll get the hang of it,” Peter shot off the ground and flew around the trees to show Caleb. Which was fantastic until something heavy dropped on him and Peter fumbled as he tried to figure it out. He looked over his shoulder and an extremely angry monkey bared its teeth at him and lifted a hand to attack. “WHAT THE F--” he quickly rolled over to try and shake the monkey.
Act like he was swimming. Right. Easier than it sounded. Before he knew what was happening Peter was a good few feet above him and Caleb was still struggling to get the hang of this. He did run into a few trees on his way up but eventually got almost as high as Peter. “This is kind of fun,” Caleb commented just as a fugly looking monkey jumped on Peter. And then another jumped on him. Caleb fell to the ground the monkey swatting at his back. Seriously? What the fuck Orange County? Caleb rolled over pushing the thing off of him and quickly jumped to his feet, ready to attack if needed.
Why in the hell were their monkeys falling from the trees? They were coming from all over and trying to take him and Caleb down to the ground for this apparent fight. And they weren’t cute ones either, they looked like rabid animals. What kind of monkeys had teeth this big? Peter let out a yell as he felt the monkey dig into his skin and he maneuvered to punch the thing off of him and then tried to fly over to Caleb to assist. “Do you have anything to kill monkeys because I definitely don’t?” he practically yelled over the noise the monkeys were making once he got to Caleb.
“Oh yeah I have some monkey poison in my back pocket,” Caleb said while punching one of the animals that was coming at him. At least he could still manage his sarcasm even while fighting off weird ass animals. The punching was kind of working even though they kept coming back at him. He wasn’t sure how long he could keep it up.
This wasn’t going to end well if they didn’t have anything to defend themselves with. He looked around and spotted a tree that didn’t have any monkeys on it and made his way up there. He grabbed a couple branches and pulled hard enough to detach them from the trees before using it to whack the monkey off of Caleb. “I think we’re gonna have to get back to the car. At least that can protect us,” Peter suggested before handing over the other branch that he had grabbed. It was almost going to be like monkey baseball if they kept leaping at them because Peter had to turn around to smack another that was heading his way.
Branches. That seemed better than just using his hand because damn it hurt already and he was terrified that one of the monkeys was going to like bite it right off. “Why’d you take us so far away from the car?” Caleb asked even though the path hadn’t seemed that far on the way there. But now with the crazy monkeys it seemed forever away. He hit one with the branch keeping it off of him but it just got back up and came right back at him. Fuck this. Caleb took off in a run towards Peter’s car.
Peter was going to comment back with something sarcastic, but he was stopped when a monkey came flying at him and landed a scratch across Peter’s face. He let out a curse and swung the branch to try and get a hit on the monkeys back out of spite. Unfortunately it missed, so instead Peter made his way down to the ground to run with Caleb since he was the one that had the car key. Once feet were firmly on the ground he began to run and could hear the sounds of the monkeys attempting to follow them. He lifted the key fob up and began to hit the unlock button until they made it close enough that it actually worked, “Fucking hell.”
“Open the door!” Caleb yelled because honestly he didn’t want to die by monkey. That was not the plan. This whole experience was definitely sobering him the hell up though. Just as he reached the door to open it a monkey scratched him on the back. Fuck that hurt. He didn’t bother to hit the thing though. He just wanted to get the hell out of there. He swung the door open and jumped inside slamming it shut behind him.
The moment that Peter got into the car his finger found the lock button immediately and he let out a breath that he didn’t realize he was holding. He just prayed that the car would hold out because monkeys were suddenly swarming them and one of them even managed to crack a window. Peter winced and put his key into the ignition, “Fuck this. I’m going to run these things over because I am so pissed off right now.” He knew Caleb would probably be more than happy to go along with that plan and he just hoped they didn’t drag any monkeys home with them.
When Peter was in the car Caleb finally looked over at him and saw the scratch on his face. Damn. That looked painful, more painful than his back which was currently bleeding on the car seat. Hopefully he didn’t end up with a nasty scar. Normally Caleb would make a sarcastic comment about that, but he was a bit too preoccupied with the being surrounded by psycho monkeys. “Floor it,” Caleb agreed. Because yes he wanted these fuckers dead.
Floor it was exactly what Peter did and the car shot out of the spot taking a few monkeys with it. He began to swerve the car around to try and shake some of the monkeys off. By the time they made it to the highway they only had one still hanging on, but the increase in speed was able to make that one lose its grip and away it went. Once that happened Peter let out a sigh of relief, “Oh thank god. That was awful. It has to be a dream thing, right? The zoo wouldn’t lose monkeys like that.”
That was some intense driving, but it worked. Peter had killed some of the monkeys and they had escaped. Hopefully they wouldn’t run into any more of those. Caleb nodded his head agreeing about the dream comment. “I feel bad for whoever dreams about those things,” because seriously those were some vicious nasty looking monkeys. “Well,” Caleb said after a few moments had passed. “I’ll never forget my first flying experience now.”
“Sorry about that,” Peter commented with a sigh as they slowed down and went back to a normal speed and Peter got back onto the correct route, “And yeah, I feel bad for whoever has these as dreams. I’ll bring you back to your car at the bar. I may need to have another drink when we get there.” He needed something to calm his nerves, but if Caleb didn’t want to join him at the bar then he would go home to have a drink. This was a fucked up night.
It wasn’t like it was Peter’s fault they had been attacked so there was no need for him to apologize. And Caleb had gotten the chance to fly. “Yeah, I could go for another drink.” It really was the only way to end the night after all that insanity.
