Being Sakura, it wasn’t terribly shocking that she already had a bunch of things set up in terms of athletics and she enjoyed working on cheerleading with Caroline. It was a good way to spend the day and as she was done with school for the week (two days of freedom! Well, and homework) it was now time to focus on preparing for cheerleading tryouts. And then meeting up with her father after so that they could go home together as he was back in town from a recent conference.
Baton in hand, she was listening and getting the basic idea (her English was definitely improving and she was missing less words now) and had just thrown her baton in the air to work on catching it (a part that was always a bit tricky for her). And then she heard something. A howl? Attention distracted, Sakura winced as the baton hit her in the head and she rubbed her nose.
“Did you hear that?”
Sense Peeta’s dreams decided to invade Orange County, Caroline had been spending most of her time with him. But today she had plans with Sakura and it was pretty impossible to cancel on the girl. Besides it seemed to be fine today, maybe it was over?
Sakura was really coming along with the cheering. It made Caroline miss it a little bit, but she just didn’t have the time anymore and she wanted to focus on acting. However their practice was interrupted by some sort of a howl. It kind of sounded like an angry monkey? Caroline had a bad feeling about this.
“Yeah,” she replied a worried expression on her face. “Maybe we should call it a day?” The noise was getting louder and it sounded like there was more than one. Yeah, she definitely had a bad feeling.
Whatever it was that was coming towards them, it sounded bad. Sakura really had no idea just what it was but it was definitely scary. And she was relieved that she had the Clow Cards with her just in case they became needed. Which...it sounded like they might given the fact that she could hear screams. Eyes widening, the teen acted on instinct, pulling out the Sealing Wand from beneath her top as it was in necklace form at the moment.
“Key that hides the forces of darkness, show me your true form! By the covenant, I Sakura command you, release!”
There, now she could use it. Next. Putting Caroline to sleep to protect her. Which well, was the theory. Still she did pull out The Sleep and threw it in the air, giving the command so that the Sleep would put everyone to sleep, or at least those without magical abilities. Too bad it didn’t stop the howling.
….And Caroline was still awake. That was unexpected but there wasn’t time to flail about that given one of thing things just burst through.
“Jump!”
Uh what the hell was Sakura doing? Talking to her necklace and throwing cards around. Must be another weird OC thing. Just like the weird monkey that was coming towards them. She didn’t really have time to question Sakura on what she was doing.
If there was ever a time to use her vampire abilities it was now. In a blur she rushed off toward the monkey, using all her strength she kicked the thing, sending it flying an anguished howl. But that was just the beginning it seemed all his little friends were coming out as well. Well this was gonna be fun.
And then there were more. Which meant that Sakura had to figure out which cards to use as these weren’t card related and she had no idea what would work against them.
“Sakura!”
Hearing Kero’s voice, she turned and flailed since he wasn’t supposed to come out where people could see him as he would just look like a talking plush toy. Not that there was much time to worry given the creepy monkey things coming towards them.
“Kero-chan, what do I do!?” Given the stress of the situation, she had slipped back into Japanese even though she knew Kero also knew English thanks to Clow Reed. Not the time though.
“Follow your instincts!”
“There’s too many!”
“Just do it!”
Not helpful. And Li-kun wasn’t here and Caroline had been super fast and that was weird but as she already had the Jump card in use, it was easier to dodge the mutts.
“Fiery!” Using The Fiery, Sakura gasped for breath, relieved that it seemed that it seemed to work against the mutts. Most had backed away but it seemed that fire definitely was something that could stop or kill them.
While fending off the monkey creatures Caroline did hear Sakura speaking another language. Japanese she assumed considering that was where Sakura was from. Who she was talking to Caroline had no idea. She was a bit too distracted fighting the things to look. She managed to snap ones neck killing it. That was just before the fire though.
Like the animals Caroline also backed away. Fire was one of the few things that could kill her, and Caroline did not want to die thank you very much. At least the monkeys were finally retreating. Now Caroline looked at Sakura. “Did you do that?”
In general, it was good to avoid fire unless someone was immune to it thanks to the dreams. But it wasn’t like Sakura was really thinking about that right now. She was a bit more distracted by trying to get the mutts to go away and protect people. Just because she was 14 didn’t mean she couldn’t do her part to help. Especially if she had the ability to do so.
With Kero flying next to her, he suddenly went ‘plush-mode’ as Caroline spoke up and the teen blinked as she looked over to the blonde.
“Ara….” Right. She hadn’t fallen asleep and was moving super fast and had super strength. As if she were using The Dash and The Strong. “Yes?”
So confidant. But it wasn’t like she really shared what she did with people. The whole thing was to be kept secret. Too late now. So instead she just gripped the Seal Wand, prepared to fight the mutts if they came closer.
Caroline got the whole no sharing thing. She didn’t go around advertising she was a vampire either. Most of her friends knew and her mom and obviously her boyfriend. But it wasn’t something she led with, and she definitely like to make sure the other person was a dreamer as well, otherwise they wouldn’t understand.
The fire was between the two of them and Sakura’s.. stuffed animal? and the monkeys. So it wasn’t like Caroline could do anymore fighting at the moment considering fire could hurt her. It didn’t seem like they wanted to cross it either. “Those are some pretty cool powers.”
“You should see me, I’m super cool! Especially my true form!” And Kero had now switched to English. All Sakura could do was sigh and drop her head.
“Not now, Kero-chan.” Right now she had to figure out a way to… Right. She could tell The Fiery what to do. “Fiery! Follow the things and make them stop hurting people!” And just like that the flames danced after the mutts to take care of them as Sakura got The Watery ready for once they were safe so that no fire escaped.
Fiery done. Time for Watery. And it seemed that they had a break in the insanity.
“Yahoo! Go Sakura!” And Kero was flying around all excited because he was incapable of being serious. No. He could be serious when it was necessary. But given Caroline had mentioned things being cool, he’d forgotten he was supposed to appear stuffed and broke his own cover. Leaving Sakura to scratch the back of her head embarrassedly.
And now her stuffed animal seemed to transform into an actual animal? This was a little weird. Not quite as weird as her boyfriend’s dreams invading all of Orange County though. What a strange fucking week.
Once the fire was gone chasing after the monkeys and away from her Caroline relaxed a bit. “Um you know your stuffed animal is talking right?”
And that seemed to queue Kero into the fact that it wasn’t just him and Sakura so he suddenly went rigid as if trying to appear like he was still a plush. Nevermind the fact that he’d been talking and flying around her. She didn’t have The Earthy, which meant he was still small but that was irrelevant. Sakura just blushed brightly.
“Ano….” But right, English. And it wasn’t like she could really try to deny it given Caroline had seen her in her Card Captor glory. “That’s Kero-chan… he’s sort of my guardian?” Those were the correct words, right? Kero didn’t seem to protest so she figured it was.
Please no more Japanese. Caroline didn’t understand it at all. She was relieved when Sakura caught herself and went back to English. Right her stuffed animal was a guardian. Really Caroline should know to expect anything by now.
“Did he just die?” Caroline asked when he turned back into a plush toy. She doubted that it was probably some magic thing, but still it looked suspicious.
Still embarrassed, Sakura shook her head. She didn’t quite know how to explain it, even as the Seal Wand reverted back to necklace form since it seemed the threat was over and done with. At least for now and if necessary, she could always call it forth again, as well as use the Clow Cards she currently had in possession.
“No… He’s just pretending…” Because what else was there to say? Kero pretended to be plush when around people not in the know but given Caroline had caught him and that she hadn’t fallen asleep like she should have? It didn’t really matter one way or the other that she knew Kero wasn’t actually a toy.
Pretending made sense. That was basically what Caroline figured anyway. “That’s good,” she said because it was good that he wasn’t dead. Whatever the hell he was. Well Sakura’s guardian or something but that was still some type of magical creature.
“He doesn’t have to pretend because of me,” she added assuringly. “I won’t tell anyone.” Obviously Caroline had abilities of her own and she was trusting Sakura wouldn’t tell anyone about that either.
If there were something Sakura was good at, it was keeping secrets. At least, she was as far as she knew. No one in her life knew about the Clow Cards (from her). Tomoyo did in the dreams just because she’d been filming and caught it, and then Li-kun as he was a descendent of Clow Reed. But in terms of her family? So Caroline’s secret was safe with her.
And it seemed Kero picked up on the comment because he was suddenly flying behind Sakura’s shoulder, looking between the two.
“Thank you. They will worry if they know.” Which was Sakura’s biggest concern really. Besides the fact she’d been given the mission to collect the Clow Cards to keep some sort of catastrophe from occurring. She really didn’t want her father or Touya or Yukito to worry about her because of these sorts of things. She could handle them.
“You were really fast. Is it like the magic? From the dreams?”
She couldn’t help but smile as the stuffed animal suddenly came back to life. He was pretty cute after all.
Caroline assumed the ‘they’ Sakura was talking about was her friends and family. Caroline understood, but at the same time the would probably want to know. Now was not the time to discuss all that, she could give advice later. Bottom line was Caroline wouldn’t be the one to tell them. “Of course,” she said simply with a small nod. “It’s not my secret to tell.”
Another nod in response to her question. “Yeah, it came from the dreams,” she paused not sure how to the next part. She had a feeling Sakura could handle it, but still the girl was young. “I’m actually a vampire. But I don’t hurt people.” She always had to add that part in when telling people what she was. Those that knew her though knew she was telling the truth, and she didn’t exactly share her secret with random people.
In Sakura’s mind, they all had enough to worry about, not to mention Touya would just tease her and be mean about it. No, it was better this way. At least right now. Who knew what would happen in the dreams or if she’d be unable to hide it. For now though? Being a Card Captor would remain her secret, so she nodded as Caroline seemed to understand that.
“Eh!? The dreams can turn you into…” But she supposed it made sense. She’d seen other people discussing blood rain and how it was delicious on the network. It was creepy. And Caroline seemed really nice. Touya would say that she was too trusting (and perhaps she was), but she didn’t think that the blonde was lying to her. “You can come out during the day?”
Well she didn’t seem scared which was definitely a relief. Caroline would be lying if she said she didn’t worry about people thinking of her differently once they knew what she was. “Yeah,” she said in response to both of Sakura’s questions although she hadn’t quite finished her first one Caroline knew where she was going with it. “I have a daylight ring,” she added elaborating on the second question. “Without it the sun would burn me up.”
Okay. That made sense. Sort of. Okay, not really. The words made sense, but the sentence did not. Sakura was used to that though. Even as her English improved and she picked up on more things, sometimes there would be a string of words that didn’t make sense together, or words that went over her head. It made school interesting even as Sakura believed that everyone was nice (they weren’t). “I’m happy you don’t burn up.”
“Me too,” obviously. Caroline liked being able to go out during the day thank you very much. “Well I think we can officially call it a day.” That had been quite the disruption to their cheer practice and Caroline needed to check on her boyfriend now, make sure he was okay. “Will you be able to make it home okay?” With Sakura’s apparent powers she wasn’t too worried but still.
“I’ll be okay! I told my father I would be meeting him after we practice.” It helped that Fujitaka was a professor at UCI, and then the fact Touya and Yukito both lived on campus. So there was definitely no need to worry there. True she didn’t want to show her powers to the three but she also wouldn’t be walking back alone. “Thank you very much!” With a bow, Sakura gathered her things, waved and then headed towards the Archeology building.
