Who: Ben Kylo and open
What: Kylo & Co. charity gala
When: February 15th
Where: A big fancy hotel ballroom
Warnings: Low/none
Status: Open!

After the sit-down dinner, there is mingling, dancing, and general socializing in the ballroom. Because yesterday was Valentine's Day, and that is the general theme of the gala, the room is decorated
appropriately.

A dessert buffet lines one wall of the room, with a savory buffet along the opposite wall. Champagne, wine, and beer come free with the price of admission, though mixed drinks cost a few dollars extra. Please tip your bartender generously.

Ben has never been fantastic at social situations, but unfortunately he's required to attend the event that his company is hosting. It's good for PR, and all that, but there are things he'd rather be doing than -- well, this.

But he's here, so he'll make the best of it. Or something like that. He lingers along the edges of the crowd with a glass of champagne, keeping an eye out for VIPs and the like in case he needs to spring into action.

This is ten kinds of screwed up.

This whole county is. But the most screwed up thing of all is the name Kylo that makes Poe's lips press into a thin line. He's only just dreamt about that part - it woke him up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, feeling like he'd been hit by a freight train. No, the name doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in Poe but here he is. The fact of the matter is that even the military needs sponsors and donors, and Poe has somehow been nominated to be the representative for the air force. Something about being decorated and charming.

He didn't pay much attention.

In any case, it's all the reason why he's grabbing a new glass of champagne before he's even started his current one. It's a double fisting sort of night. He wheedles his way out of a conversation with a lot of thank yous and finds that he's in front of a dessert spread. It's enough to make him not notice the giant figure lurking nearby.

"Should we have put limits on the free champagne?"

Though honestly, he can blame him. It feels like that kind of night already. He takes a fresh glass for himself and offers his hand.

If Poe has any hands free, anyway. "Ben Kylo. Thank you for coming tonight."

Poe nearly chokes mid-sip of his champagne. He recovers quickly and moves one glass over, holding two flutes by the stems. So that's what's lurking under all that mask, he thinks, absently, shaking the offered hand. Significantly less ominous.

"Poe Dameron. People really only come for the free champagne."

"Not entirely free, since you pay to get in. But you're probably right, at that."

He looks faintly amused at the glass juggling, and shakes the man's hand quickly so he can go back to holding his glasses. "We don't do to-go boxes, for the record."

"I didn't pay. I mean personally. I'm not party crashing."

Poe downs one of the glasses more quickly than is maybe proper and sets it aside, so now he's just got one.

"I've got hands. I'll find a way to squirrel it home."

"And pockets. I'll have to keep an eye on you." He doesn't care, really. They'll have leftovers anyway.

"Are you here representing someone?"

"And ruin the lines of this suit? Even I have some dignity."

Poe tries not to think about how odd this is. It's not odd by OC standards, is his justification.

"The Air Force. They must have underestimated my ability to embarrass them."

"Well I promise not to report you to your superior if you do manage to do something embarrassing. Though you might throw an extra few dollars in the jar just to ensure that I don't."

It's hard to tell if he's joking, his expression is so carefully blank.

"They'd probably just give me a slap on the hand. They like me too much."

Poe shrugs and sips at the other glass of champagne. He doesn't have a poker face, though. A smile is tugging at his lips.

"We could start over again. I could pretend to be much more reserved."

"That must be nice. Being well liked." He feels people are stricter on him than really necessary, but oh well.

"No it's -- this is fine. I don't really like reserved people."

"It's definitely not terrible."

Poe clears his throat. That doesn't sound like a great topic to continue to pursue, so he latches on to the second part.

"Good. The damage is sort of done anyway. You'll never stop thinking about me double fisting champagne."

Leia and OTA

While Leia was often busy with school work these days, as well as her internship and volunteering, not to mention rallies she would find, there were still certain things that were expected of her given her father's position as a UN ambassador, even if he hadn't had a placement in a while. Such things included charity galas.

The timing however was.... Leia didn't know. It was either poor in her tastes because not only was she still worried about Anakin, but the strange weather from the day before had also made her uneasy just as the fog a few weeks prior had; or it was a much needed distraction from the things which worried her. Well no. Leia was just exceptionally good at compartmentalising the different things she had on her plate.

Such as right now. Mingling with people Bail wanted her to talk with and get to know. Networking and making those connections that might come in use for her once she left school. It was a fascinating game and also tiresome. But she continued to play it as well as excel at it. Managing to escape from a rather tedious conversation, the brunette found a wall to stick to, glass of wine in hand as she observed those around her.

Ben's father is more than pleased to have the ambassador's daughter attending their event. As such, he'd told Ben to keep an out for her so he could wine and dine a bit.

And now here she is and Ben pushes a hand through his hair, hoping he looks halfway presentable.

(Black on black suits are always classy, but his hair has a mind of its own sometimes.)

"Miss Organa," he says, politely, settling next to her with his own glass of wine.

Hearing her name, Leia looked up and to the side. Even with a slight heel on her shoes, the man beside her was certainly looming. Not that it ever bothered her. Oh no, Leia was quite good at making her presence felt despite it all. So while annoying, her height, or lack there of, never proved detrimental as she just had that sort of aura about her.

"Mister Kylo." Of course she knew who he was. Why would one go to a gala and not know who it was that was hosting it? Leia had done her homework. "Lovely evening that you've given people, good for a distraction." Though most of the people she had noticed she had not noticed on the network so there was a chance they might not know as much as others in regards to the weather. But given it was just tidal waves and blood rain yesterday, perhaps there wasn't too much to worry about.

Ha. As if it were ever that simple.

"My father, technically, but hopefully everyone is having fun. Despite all the strange things going on."

It's sort of hard not to loom, when the person he's talking to is so much shorter than him, and he finds himself hunching a little to make up the difference.

"Are you enjoying yourself?"

"Technically."

Because Leia could understand that. Parents setting things up and being the one who has to run it or oversee it. Still, it was something and given the strange things going on, it didn't matter who was the one who came up with it. What mattered was that it was still happening.

"I am, and it's for a good cause, which certainly doesn't hurt."

"I would be concerned if people did plan for it." Given it seemed to be a strange event and really wasn't something most people could plan for. True there was something to be said about always being prepared, but this sort of thing? Definitely went beyond the normal scope of that. "I do think it is a good reason to be out of it though, even if only for a few hours."

"You know, I didn't watch the weather forecast, but maybe I should have. It might have been amusing, watching the weatharman attempt to explain all of this. Tidal waves are one thing, but this is something else."

"Raise a glass to climate change." Yes, she was being sarcastic in that as she lifted her wine glass in mock toast. But she wasn't an idiot and she knew that this was more than what the official line was. Which was climate change. Though there was the amusement factor for the poor weather people to try and attempt what was happening.

James walked through the crowd. He was dressed in a suit, not quite a tux, with his hair pulled back. He was promoting, but he also liked charity functions. He was hoping that a few of his friends might be here, especially since he was making it a point to get out more. He needed some sort of social life. Man didn't get by with work alone, and this was better than the club scene.

He walked by the bar, getting a drink along the way, then he stopped at the snack table to pick at the offerings. He waved at one of the actors on his last project, but the man was across the room and busy with a date. He moved, picking up one more snack, popping it in his mouth. They were delicious.

"We always go all out on food," Ben says, making a small plate for himself as well. "It's really the only redeeming quality of an event like this. Other than the money that is raised, of course."

"I love the food," James grinned at the man who joined him, filling a plate himself. "I like the charity work as well. It's good to give back, but good food makes it even sweeter." He took a piece of cake to top off a meal. "I went to one that was a complete desert bar. It was delicious, but all desert gave me a sugar rush for a week."

"Sweets do put people in a good mood though. They make them want to open their pocket books. That's the theory anyway." James gave him a smile. "It's a necessary sacrifice for the greater good of charity."

"I'm James, by the way." He held out a hand for the other man to shake, balancing the plate with one hand.

"If you want to test it, give someone a carrot, and talk to them, then an hour later, give them chocolate cake. It a different conversation." James smiled as they shook. "What do you do, other than charity galas?"
