Whatever had been going on in the county over the last couple of days had been making Jem feel uneasy. Whenever he stepped out of the house a sense of foreboding came over him which didn't go away easily when he went back inside. The fog was ominous and the fact that Church appeared to be hissing at dark corners didn't make it any better. Not only that but Jem had noticed that floorboards seemed to be creaking more than usual and wallpaper had begun to peel among other things. Whatever was going on was dark and Jem didn’t like it.
The only thing that made him feel any better was that Will and Tessa were home during this ordeal. Most businesses were closed or appeared as if they had never opened so Tessa was home from the bookstore and classes had been cancelled so they had decided to spend yet another night in.
“I’ll be very happy when this fog or whatever it is is gone,” Jem said, setting a tea tray down on the coffee table.
Will felt very much the same, there was something creepy and disturbing in the fog. It felt like they were being watched and he didn’t like it at all. Their house didn’t even feel as safe and comforting as it usually did.
“Me too” he said with a nod reaching out to squeeze Jem’s hand, “Hopefully it won’t be too long, like most strange things in this place” He didn’t like that they couldn’t fight this like before though.
Tessa stood with her arms wrapped around herself, looking uneasily out of the living room window while the boys talked behind her. She hated this fog. Hated being restricted, hated being watched, hated being off kilter. Without the shop she didn't really have much to occupy her time with apart from Will and Jem or books. Now granted, they were all things that she loved, but she liked to have purpose. Will and Jem could study and keep themselves moving towards a goal, whereas without the shop, Tessa found herself lacking in direction. Hearing the clink of the tray being placed on the coffee table, she sighed, rubbing her arms with her hands as the chill coming from the window crept into her flesh. “How much longer do you think it will last?” she asked, sounding distracted as she did. Her mind seemed to be hypervigilant lately, seeing shapes and movement in the fog. At least, she thought she did.
Jem glanced at Will as his hand was taken and squeezed and he gave the other man a small smile then turned to Tessa, “I’m trying to be optimistic that it will clear up within the next day or so.” However, it was hard to be optimistic when everything just felt so hopeless at the moment. He knew it was a result of the fog, but it was hard to feel otherwise. Picking up the teapot, Jem began filling the three cups and making each like they all liked them. After being together for a little more than a year, Jem knew how they took their tea just as he knew so many other things about them that he didn’t need to ask. Once he was finished, he handed them, complete with saucers, to his two significant others.
Will put his on the table as he moved over to Tessa and wrapped his arms around her waist, “Come and sit down with us, the fog will not disappear just because you’re watching it” he encouraged her to move to the couch with himself and Jem. She was antsy that much was obvious, but there was little worrying would do.
Tessa smiled as she took the cup and saucer from Jem. She leaned back when she felt Will behind her and rested her forehead against his cheek. She breathed in his scent and sighed heavily as she conceded they were right, then let Will guide her back to the couch to sit with them. “Very well, what do you suggest we do tonight to take our minds off it?” she asked, blowing on the surface of her tea before taking a little sip. It was still too hot, so she leaned forward and placed it on the table before leaning back.
Jem watched as Will got up and approached Tessa, “I have an idea that might lighten the mood a little,” Setting down his own mug, Jem got to his feet and headed for his and Will’s room, the floorboards creaking more than usual. Reaching the room, he picked up his violin and returned to the living room, “Perhaps this will put us in a better mood.” Jem played for Will and Tessa often and it always seemed to put everyone in a good mood.
Will smiled, “As always Jem knows exactly what is needed” he said, curling around Tessa as they watched and listened to their boyfriend play for them. There were few things in the world that were as perfect as listening to Jem play just for them. It seemed to calm everything, even the fog didn’t seem as bad as the music filled their home.
Leaning her cheek against the top of Will’s head, she breathed deeply and sighed out her tension and anxiety out. Listening to Jem playing his beautiful music was incredibly calming and it soothed her heart a great deal. Not only listening to it, but watching him play. Seeing someone so immersed in their art was incredible and she only wished she had a talent like that she could share. Reaching out, she took hold of Will’s hand where it lay against her leg and threaded her fingers with his as she smiled at Jem while he played. Right now, she couldn’t think of anything more perfect.
When he played, it still amazed him that he was able to do it so well. That the music just came to him without even needing to think about it. For so long he’d tried to play various instruments and couldn’t play a tune to save his life, but the dreams had given him this talent and he wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
With his eyes closed, he didn’t see Will and Tessa’s responses to the music, but he knew the effect it would have over them because he’d played for them so many times before. He knew it helped to sooth them no matter what the situation so he’d known that this would help now. He played for another few moments before he finally stopped and opened his eyes and lowered the violin and bow, “Should I continue playing?”
As much as Will could listen to Jem play all night he kind of wanted him to come snuggle with them both on the sofa, Tessa like the middle of a snuggle sandwich. So he shook his head, “Later? Right now you should come snuggle with us and drink tea” He loved Jem’s playing but didn’t want to make him do it and miss out on this closeness.
Tessa opened her eyes and smiled at him, reaching out her hand to him. She looked at him contentedly and curled her fingers towards him in invitation. He, along with Will, had done wonders in settling her nerves and she often wondered how they seemed to know exactly how to soothe her. She couldn’t believe she was so lucky most of the time. Others only dreamed of feeling love like she felt for Will and Jem. She didn’t know what she’d ever do if she lost them.
Jem set his violin and bow down on the coffee table and moved to take Tessa’s hand and sit down on the couch beside her, giving them each a smile, “I’m glad that helped.” While that foreboding feeling still hung in the air, Jem felt a little less hopeless at the moment. As far as he was concerned, as long as he had Tessa and Will no matter what Orange County threw at them, he’d be okay.
