Caleb’s relationship with Hanna had changed a lot over the past few weeks. Because of him she had been hurt. While he wasn’t sure if he could ever forgive himself for that he knew he still wanted to be with Hanna. He was determined to do whatever he could to make her feel special and loved. So as cheesy as it was Caleb was making a big deal about Valentine’s Day.
Caleb was as dressed up as he got, in nice slacks and a collared shirt. He gave her a bouquet of flowers when he picked her up and then it was off to the beach for their gondola ride. They had to get there before sunset after all. “Wait,” Caleb told Hanna after parking the car. He hurried to get out and open the door for her.
Things had definitely changed since everything had happened. And while things did tend to change as time went on, they rarely had something that drastic occur. But that had happened and the only thing to do now was move forward. Hanna refused to be afraid or hide away. She wanted to get her life back together and that was just what she was doing.
The idea of a gondola ride was rather sweet and so Hanna had chosen a nice skirt and blouse. The ride sounded like it would be nice and she was excited for it. Though she was totally ready to get out when Caleb told her to wait and then got the door for her.
“You are quite the gentleman.”
“Don’t act so surprised,” he teased leading her over to the dock to get on the gondola. He had arranged chocolate, champagne and wine ahead of time. He wasn’t big on either drink, but he’d drink the wine. He figured Hanna might like champagne though so both it was. It was a good thing he still had his job with the money he was spending on this one date but Hanna deserved it and more.
“You know, every holiday I have celebrated with you has been my first,” he commented once they were settled on the gondola. He was sure Hanna knew that already though, but still it was worth pointing out.
Hands up in mock surrender at the shocked comment, Hanna just grinned. “Right. I’ll work on my not surprised face then.” Looking around, Hanna laced her arm through Caleb’s for the walk to where they were to get the gondola. Really, she had no idea on what quite to expect but she was still looking forward to it.
“Hopefully first of many.” Many firsts or many holidays, it could be taken either way and that was fine by her. Despite the rebuilding that they were presently in the midst of, Hanna still was looking at this relationship in a long term way and less in her guard her heart and prepare for the worst. Which had yet to work for her in the past, but once she gave her heart, she gave it fully. Even if it might not seem that way at times.
There had already been so many firsts with Hanna, and not just in regards to the holidays. But Caleb certainly mind more of both. “Definitely the first of many,” he learned his lesson. No way in hell was he ever leaving her again. Even before he knew what had happened to her, when he still thought he was doing the right thing, it was torture being away from her. But he wasn’t going to dwell on any of that. They were moving forward, moving on.
The gondolier poured their drinks as they headed out on their little sunset cruise. “Speaking of firsts,” Caleb said reaching into his pocket. “I was thinking you could be the first person other than my landlord to have a key to my apartment. I mean you spend most nights there already,” or at least she did before everything, and they were getting back to that place. He held out the key for her, it was her choice if she wanted it or not.
Good answer. Not that Hanna expected less, but there was that concern in the back of her mind that he was going to decide it wasn’t worth it now. Irrelevant, illogical, but it existed. But they both knew it was better this way, rebuilding because there was no way to just...go back to how it was before. That would be insane.
Smiling in thanks to the gondolier as she was given her drink, she blinked at the comment then smiled.
“This is very true.” Okay. Had been true but they were getting there again and if he wanted her to have the key to his apartment? It did ease some of those concerns as she took it and smiled at her boyfriend. “Thank you.”
“Of course,” he replied with a grin. Yeah he definitely wasn’t going anywhere and the key was just further proof, although he had been thinking of giving her one before everything happened but got sidetracked (obviously). Another thing that needed to be stated.
The sun was setting and even Caleb had to admit it was beautiful. He was proud of himself for setting this up, and by the look on his girlfriend’s face it was clear she was enjoying it as well. He couldn’t afford something this extravagant all the time but he was definitely going to start taking her out more. “Tomorrow it’s Netflix and chill,” he teased just as the gondola began to rock.
The gondolier frowned. Well that was worrisome. “We are going to have to go back.”
That caused Caleb to frown. He was trying to plan the perfect night for Hanna and now it was getting cut short?
Hanna was definitely enjoying herself, though she did roll her eyes in amusement at the Netflix and chill comment before she went back to her previous mode of watching things and just… really enjoying the view. Or that was the plan until the boat ride suddenly got very, very bumpy and the gondolier was saying that they were going to need to head back.
Okay….. obviously if the weather said they had to, but what the hell was up with the water to begin with.
And that was when she felt something fall from the sky. Looking up, she scrunched up her nose before realising what it was.
“Ohmigod, is that blood?!”
Caleb felt a raindrop as well. It wasn’t until Hanna said something that he realized what it was. “Gross,” he said just as more and more drops began to fall. He probably wasn’t as grossed out as his girlfriend but still it was disgusting.
“Yeah let’s get back,” he was very okay with them heading in now, what with how much the gondola was rocking and the blood falling from the sky. The disappointment that his plans had been ruined was still there but right now he just wanted to get the fuck back to his car and not have blood falling all over him. He wrapped his arm around Hanna holding her tightly as they made their way back. Because seriously this rocking was kind of scary and the last thing he wanted was for something to happen to her.
“Extremely gross.” This was just wrong on so many levels. Hanna didn’t even know what to make of it besides pressing close against Caleb. She really didn’t feel like falling into the water. One time from a failed surprise party was more than enough if you asked her.
The journey back was getting intense but it seemed they at least got back without taking any serious damage. Now it was just… getting back to Caleb’s and showering and then…. figuring something else out.
Once they were back at the dock Caleb hurried Hanna back to his car and drove back to his place. After a shower and dinner they ended up in his bed to properly celebrate the holiday. Eventually they fell asleep and of course Caleb was greeted with new dreams. Almost every time something good happened with Hanna he ended up with another dream. It was getting annoying.
This time he traveled on a bus to Ravenswood to help Hanna. He ended up talking to some chick named Miranda who had the same hairstyle as him. Once in Ravenswood they separated and somehow Miranda ended up with Hanna. He found them both together. However instead of heading home with Hanna his girlfriend insisted he stay and help Miranda find her family. After kissing Hanna goodbye he walked through a graveyard with Miranda and found a gravestone with his name and picture on it. What the hell?
All things considered, Hanna wasn’t exactly feeling Valentine’s Day anymore, she just wanted to curl up and forget the blood because that was beyond gross. She would have been fine with the netflix part of netflix and chill and just staying curled up on the couch. It had been like a freaking horror movie out there. But then there was falling asleep and more dreams. Because of course there were.
Then again, they tended to happen fairly often, once every few days. This one though? The hunt for Ali was on. Hanna had never believed she was dead and now it seemed the others agreed. Or at least enough that they were actively investigating and trying to find her. In the horrorshow of a town known as Ravenswood. Locked in a room, Caleb…. telling him to help Miranda because she could see how important it was. Getting back and seeing Ali there. Only for her to vanish again.
Waking up with a start, Hanna just blinked as she stared at the ceiling. She was right. She was actually right.
Caleb was relieved when he woke up and was still in bed with Hanna. He wrapped an arm around her pulling her close. “I had another dream,” Caleb said softly. He was back to being totally honest with Hanna and part of that was telling her about his dreams, even if they did dream the same things. Sometimes one of them was ahead of the other.
He didn’t feel like getting up just yet though. Maybe if he did he would have seen the gravestone at next to his bed. But his eyes were solely focused on Hanna.
Feeling Caleb shift awake, Hanna curled up against him as he pulled her close.
“You too?”
Because really, the dreams were ridiculous and consistent and Hanna was bored of them. No. Not bored, just exhausted and wanted them to stop so she could stop looking over her shoulder all the time. Assuming that ever went away.
Well apparently Hanna had a dream as well. “Mhm,” Caleb replied still pretty sleepy. “I met you in this place called Ravenswood. You thought A was holding Ali there. There’s something… not right about that place.” Considering he had seen his fucking grave. And Miranda’s too.
“Wait. Did we seriously just have the same dream?” That woke her up. Sitting upright, Hanna blinked in shock. “Because yeah. We just went to this costume thing in that creep town.” Even the memory of it caused her to shiver. How could a place be that disturbing and messed up?
“I was right, you know. About Ali. She showed up but then Mister Fitz drove up and she was gone.”
It was strange. But after all the doubt and people not believing her… there was that sense of vindication that she’d been right about Ali and the fact that she was still alive. They just… had to find out who was trying to hurt her so she could come home.
“But yeah. That place definitely gives me the creeps.”
She dreamt the same thing? Well that was new. They had never done that before. Weird. If that didn’t wake him up, Hanna suddenly bolting up and announcing that Ali was alive sure did. Caleb never doubted that Hanna was right about that, in the dreams or real life. But still hearing that she actually saw Alison? That was big.
“Wait,” Caleb said following suit and sitting up as well. “After we said goodbye you -” his thought was cut off though when he noticed something out of the corner of his eye, just past Hanna.
He froze for a moment. “What the fuck?” he finally said as he climbed out of bed to go take a closer look. Yup there is was, the goddamn tombstone. “Uh, Hanna?”
“Yeah. We went back to Rosewood and she was there and--” But Caleb wasn’t listening and seemed to be distracted by something. “Caleb?” Eyes narrowing some in confusion, Hanna watched as her boyfriend climbed out of bed to investigate something, turning to look at him, brow quirked inquisitively.
“Yeah…?” Only then did she notice the tombstone. “....Why is there a tombstone in your room?” This Valentine’s Day just kept getting stranger and stranger.
This Ravenswood shit was getting way too real. It was one thing to dream about the creepy town, another to have the gravestone actually show up. “It’s mine. I think.” He wasn’t sure, although how many other Caleb Rivers that looked exactly like him were there? “I found it with Miranda after I left you, while you were seeing Ali I guess.” Because yes even though he had been distracted he still heard what Hanna said.
“Okay. That’s just… what the hell!?” Really, there were no words for the fact that Caleb had a freaking tombstone. In fact, she crawled over to the edge of the bed and then got off to investigate it herself. And… that was beyond creepy. The picture looked just like him. Same name. But different date. “Can we quit the dreams? Please?” Admittedly this was a common comment from Hanna between her and Aria because of the paranoia, but this was some next level nonsense.
What the hell was he supposed to do with this thing? He’d have to figure out someway to get rid of it cause no way in hell did he want to keep it. It was creepy as fuck, and while the picture on it did look exactly like him. No way would Caleb ever wear his hair like that. Or a tie.
“Is that possible? Because sign me up.” No way did he want to dream about A or creepy town. “Hopefully we at least find Miranda’s family soon and I can get the fuck back to Rosewood.” Words he never thought he would ever say, but seriously he had a bad feeling about that place.
“I’m not really tired anymore.” Well that was a lie, he was exhausted but he didn’t think he would be able to sleep. “Let’s go downstairs and watch TV.” And get the fuck away from the tombstone.
Who wanted to get back to Rosewood? Hanna wanted out like no other. But given the creepiness factor of Ravenswood, it made sense in its own way. “I hope so as well.” Obviously. Because while it was the right thing to do (the poor girl had no one, Caleb understood and since she wasn’t willing to return to Rosewood as well…) that didn’t mean Hanna wanted Caleb gone for a long time. Not with everything that was going on.
“TV sounds like a great plan.”
