As discussed, Remus stayed after work one day so he could talk to Audrey. He was still wrapping his head around the fact that his friends were sharing his dreams, let alone his boss. But he was curious about it all the same, and he wanted to learn more about what magic he may or may not have, so Audrey seemed the best bet.
He sat at a table with his tea, patiently waiting for her to have a moment. He certainly wasn’t in any rush. This wasn’t the sort of thing you could just power through, anyway.
Merlin had the baby for the day, so Audrey was on her own. She finished working with the bakers in the back, hung up her apron, and headed out into the cafe to where she knew Remus was waiting. This was going to be a very, very strange conversation. For both of them. So she picked up a plate of assorted cookies (chocolate ones, mostly) and then approached with caution.
“Remus?” She asked. It was still so weird to call him that. It’d been … weeks? Months? And it still felt weird. “Cookie?” She offered up the plate.
“Chocolate cookies, one of my many weaknesses,” he said. Remus was light-hearted and pleasant as always, reaching to take one of the offered cookies. “Thank you. For - the cookies and for talking, I guess. I’m still sort of wrapping my head around the fact that you know Hogwarts, too.”
Audrey set the plate down between them, then slipped into the booth opposite her former-Defense-Against-the-Dark-Arts-tea
“Yes, well… in my Dreams I was Hufflepuff, class of 1995.” Audrey wondered if he would put the timeline together in his head and… well, she wondered if he wondered if they knew each other.
“Hufflepuff?” The house name made Remus smile. So far, he was only in the company of Gryffindors - well, and Slytherin, if you counted Regulus. Audrey would absolutely be a Hufflepuff though, wouldn’t she? He was about to say as much when his brain caught up.
“Wait - 1995?” Remus blinked. “Geez. I was out by 1978. I - Haven’t even dreamed that far, yet. I’m at. Well.” He cleared his throat and shrugged. “1981. Which was a terrible year, I should say.”
Audrey nodded, beaming brightly with house pride. It felt like it’d been such a long time since she’d been in Hufflepuff--since she’d felt the bond with the badger. She remembered so clearly sneaking into the kitchens and studying with Professor Sprout in the Greenhouses. And, of course, Quirrell, Lockhart, and Lupin teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts as the wizarding world grew more and more dark.
But then Audrey’s face fell. She knew just as well as any other witch or wizard what happened to Professor Lupin in 1981. She cleared her throat. “I’m so sorry, Remus.” She said, trying to relate her understanding of the situation to him. “It must have been awful.”
Oh. Remus hadn’t stopped to think that Audrey would know what had happened. He supposed it was probably something of a big deal. Dream Audrey would have been quite young at the time, but he recalled it being big news in the wizarding world. Of course it had been. Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived. He shrugged a bit.
“It was not the most pleasant thing. I’m not certain if I ought to say something, you know? To - Them. Lily and James. And Sirius. I want them to enjoy dreaming about Hogwarts and all that, and not worry about the inevitable.”
Audrey hadn’t realized--because she wasn’t thinking, obviously--that Remus was close with Lily, James and Sirius. And she didn’t know that Remus was so far ahead of his friends in the Dreams. She nodded. “It’s a difficult decision. I mean, it’s not one that you should make on your own. Do they know how far ahead you’ve Dreamed?”
“They know I’m ahead of them. By a lot. We’re all pretty excited by it, so we talk about it a lot. But.” Remus took a bite of another cookie. “I think I won’t say anything? At least not until it looks likes it’s close. I don’t want to ruin it.”
“No, I think it’s a good idea for you to keep it to yourself. Unless they… ask?” She paused for a moment, trying to figure out how to word her next question carefully. “...would you want to know if someone else had information about your future?”
“... No. No, it’d fill me with anxiety. It’s the last thing anyone needs, isn’t it?” Remus shrugged. “I won’t tell them. I don’t think they’d like it. But if they ask - then maybe. If they ask. Thanks, by the way, for chatting to me about this. I appreciate it.”
“Anytime, Remus.” Audrey said, deciding she’d wait to see if he asked her more about her own schooling, about his future. She figured all that would probably come eventually. He might even remember her from the Dreams, too--if he recognized her as one of his students. Maybe. “Seriously, any time.”
