A variety of feelings followed Furiosa around in the wake of the fog. She hadn’t liked the way the fog had made her feel, and she felt some level of guilt over what had happened with Capable. Not that it had been bad. It was really good. But she was also worried over what it meant for them. For their dynamic, and for the dynamic that included Splendid and Max.
It hadn’t helped that Laura had sensed something was up when she finally returned to the apartment. She had looked at them, sniffed, and then raised her eyebrows. Mercifully she hadn’t said anything.
But Splendid was right and she and Capable needed to talk, even if Splendid hadn’t entirely known just how her and Capable’s friendship had ended up.
Laura was packing a backpack with a change of clothing, her laptop and her homework. “She’ll be home soon. You should talk to her then.”
“I hate when you do that.”
“I have insight,” Laura quipped. “If you’re on the same page, then it will be okay.”
“I don’t even know what page I’m on,” Furiosa replied.
Laura tilted her head. “Then it’s going to be more complicated.”
“Spending the night at Rapunzel’s again?” Furiosa wondered if Laura was eventually going to move out, either with Rapunzel or her father. She’d miss her, but she’d understand.
“Maybe.” And Laura blushed, which meant the maybe was a yes. At least Furiosa could turn the tables.
After the fog and everything that had happened things seemed to have shifted between herself and Furiosa and Capable wasn’t sure what it meant. Furiosa hadn’t refused to sleep in the bed or anything but she hadn’t said anything and things felt tenuous.
It left her very confused and worried, maybe she had done something wrong after all. She didn’t understand much about relationships but then maybe that wasn’t what Furiosa had wanted.
She’d been distracted at work but didn’t feel like it was something she could talk to Tessa about and Myrcella hadn’t been in. Entering the house she put a smile on her face and called out an “I’m home”
“See, she’s home,” Laura said. She put her pack down, and walked over to Capable. “Now you two can sit and talk.” She ignored the expression on Furiosa’s face, and took Capable’s elbow to lead her over to the couch. “You sit too, Furiosa.”
Furiosa sat. There wasn’t much use in arguing.
“Oh okay, is everything alright?” Capable asked as Laura led her over to the couch, “Has something happened?” she added in concern, after all it wasn’t all that often that she was immediately forced to sit when she walked through the door.
“I know you two have had sex, and you haven’t talked about it.” Laura folded her arms and glared at Furiosa. Clearly she was blaming Furiosa on that part. “There’s a little too much tension. You’re my friends.” She didn’t care if they were close as long as they were happy, but she wondered if she was the only one that felt the tension.
“Laura…” Furiosa glared at her, then rubbed her face. She hadn’t wanted to think about it.
Capable actually blushed at that, but looked at Laura a little sharply, “Furiosa doesn’t want to talk to me about that. It isn’t right to make her” yes there was tension but if Laura made them talk Capable was worried something awful might happen. If Furiosa wanted to pretend it didn’t happen then Capable wasn’t going to force her not to.
Laura frowned, then swung her pack over her shoulder. “Don’t you?”
Furiosa sighed, letting her hand drop into her lap. “I do. In my own time.”
“When would that have been?”
“Next year.”
Laura smirked at her, then turned on her heel and headed outside, leaving the two women on the couch. Furiosa looked at Capable. “She’s...probably right, though.”
Capable nodded, looking at the floor, “You don’t have to. It’s okay if you regret it, I’m just glad you’re still here” she said closing her eyes for a moment before looking up with a smile, hiding her emotional turmoil and confusion, “We’re still friends”
“I don’t regret it.” She took Capable’s hand. “I’m just not sure what it means. Or if it should mean anything. And I was worried about our friendship. And I feel… guilty.”
It all came out in a rush, and she felt embarrassed.
Capable managed a small honest smile then, glad to hear Furiosa didn’t regret being with her. “Do you want it to mean something?” she asked, because surely that was the better question but she frowned when Furiosa mentioned guilt, “You have nothing to feel guilty about”
“I’m worried we were both vulnerable. And I know you were willing and eager.” Furiosa looked down at their joined hands. “I guess we need to figure out what this new us actually is.”
And while she shouldn’t wonder, she still did wonder what Max and Splendid would think. If they’d approve, or be angry. Or if they’d be happy for them.
“You were okay with it too right?” Capable said, worried when Furiosa said they were both vulnerable that Capable had somehow taken advantage of Furiosa without realising it.
“Okay, what do you want it to be?” she asked, Capable wasn’t yet thinking about anybody else. This was down to what she and Furiosa wanted, concern for others would come later.
Here Furiosa was worried about being the one to take advantage, and there Capable was worried about the same thing in the opposite direction. Furiosa shook her head, amused at herself and their situation. It was a better feeling than guilt. “I care about you. I don’t want you doing something that you’ll regret. That’s the only thing that would make me regret it.”
“I care about you too. A lot” Capable said, “And I don’t regret anything. I liked being with you. You make me feel happy and sexy and thing’s I’ve never felt before” she admitted, “I like those feelings”
Furiosa nodded. “I know. I just wonder if there’s not someone out there who’d be a better match. I’m not trying to sell myself short. It’s just that you’re still so new to all of this.” She let go of Capable’s hand, moving instead to put an arm around her. “I’m scared I’ll lose you if this goes bad.”
“You won’t lose me” Capable said, “And there is nobody out there better than you. I trust you and care about you. I am new but I’m not stupid, I care about you and don’t want to experiences things with somebody I don’t care about”
Maybe there was an old part of Furiosa, a romantic part that thought people deserved something sweet and innocent and that she’d never, ever get that. Because of what she’d been through, the things that she’d done. She didn’t deserve that sweet romance and she didn’t know if she’d be able to give it to Capable. But Capable was stubborn and Furiosa didn’t want to actually fight it. “I forget how stubborn you can get. And how attractive it is.”
Capable blushed but smiled, “And I forget how distracting you can be when I am trying to make a point” she replied but leaned in to press a kiss to Furiosa’s lips, “But I am stubborn and I will be very stubborn about this”
“Some things are worth losing on,” Furiosa murmured. She kissed Capable back. “I want this.” Even if Capable deserved better. Furiosa didn’t have a low opinion of herself but she knew what kind of person she was. A survivor. And it was easy to forget sometimes that Capable was a survivor too and she had to remind herself of that.
“Good because I do too” Capable said, she was a survivor and she was stronger than most realised. “So, what happens now?” she asked.
“What do you want to happen?” Furiosa was content to keep it to themselves for a little bit. Or at least not go advertising wildly. Relationships were a private thing for her, but it also wasn’t anything to be ashamed of. “I haven’t even been on a date since I was seventeen.”
“Then we’re almost even because I’ve never been on one” Capable said with a smile, “Can it just be us for a while? So we can find our way before others know?” she asked, she wasn’t ashamed either but finding a comfortable point for them both was important before involving others. Though Splendid may pick up on something, she always seemed to know.
“Okay. It can be just us,” Furiosa threaded her fingers with Capables. “But I might have … asked Splendid for some advice after she started to suspect something. So I’m certain she’ll figure it out soon enough.”
“Even if you hadn’t said anything she probably would figure it out anyway. She’s scary like that” Capable grinned, “And maybe it will encourage her to say something to Max”
Furiosa hoped Max was receptive to that. Now there was a person who had low self-worth, and no matter how much Furiosa and the girls tried to show him, she thought that it didn’t always get through. Max was like an abused and feral dog, always ducking his head when someone lifted a hand to pet him because he expected to be struck. Or biting that hand on instinct.
She pulled Capable closer, almost into her lap. “You need to keep calling me on my bullshit, okay?”
Capable tried with Max too, she felt he was almost like an older brother and she cared about him a great deal. He deserved happiness and she would work hard to convince him of that too.
“Okay” Capable agreed, moving the entire way into Furiosa’s lap, “I think I can do that”
Furiosa’s hand fell to Capable’s hips, where they roamed a little admiringly. “Scared?”
“Nope, I’m braver than I look” she said with a smile, leaning in to kiss her.
"That's one thing I like about you." At least one of many things. Furiosa's hand rose up Capable's sides, then her arms, and finally into hair as they kissed.
Capable’s own arms wrapped around Furiosa comfortably as they kissed and she relaxed into it, the tension of not talking properly easing from her bones.
She felt good in Furiosa’s lap, against her body, her hand in the redhead’s hair. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “For being an idiot.”
“It’s okay, I’m sorry for not being braver and making you talk” she said, “From now on we always talk” she added decisively.
“Always talk,” Furiosa agreed. She moved her hand down to the small of Capable’s back. It was like they were starting on a brand new adventure. Hopefully involving less bullets, this time.
