Vanessa was trying not to make any major changes to her sister’s house and yard but she figured a house plant would be okay. Maybe a flower or something small that would fit on a windowsill. There was a greenhouse that she passed everyday on her way to and from the Cafe so she just turned in one afternoon, pulling her hair back into a ponytail as she walked through the door. “Okay...I want something that’s low maintenance but nice to look at,” she said talking to herself as she started looking at the plants on display.

Hisoka had just finished watering the plants in the back when he noticed someone coming in. She looked like she was on some sort of mission as he watched her pull her hair back. He thought that maybe he should just let her look on her own, that she maybe had something in mind already. But then he heard her speak and couldn’t help but speak up.
“Are you looking for flowering or non flowering?”

Vanessa jumped a little bit when she heard somebody ask her a question and then she laughed at herself as she turned to look at the guy. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t even see you there,” she said a little embarrassed. “I’m not really sure actually. I’m just looking for something to brighten my room up.” She said with a friendly smile.

“Don't apologize, it's my fault. I tend to be rather quiet without realizing it.” He said quickly. He had always been quiet growing up and it was a skill that had seemed to improve since his dreams revealed him to be a Shinigami.
“I think we should be able to find something that will suit your needs” he added returning the friendly smile with a small one of his own. “We're you looking to start from a seed or a standard house plant?”

“There’s nothing wrong with being quiet. I kind of wish I’d had that ability when I lived in New York. I could have gone out with my dad for late night snacks a lot more often without my younger siblings waking up and wanting to come with us.” Vanessa said when he apologized. “I seriously should have been paying more attention.”
She thought for a moment about his question. “A standard house plant I think. I don’t want to wait for it to grow to brighten the place up.”
***
Hisoka gave a small smile as she spoke briefly about His skill with silence. He didn’t have siblings. He barely had parents really. So he really didn’t understand what she was speaking of when it came to experience.
“I think we can find something perfect for you here.” He offered. “have you had any plants before?”
****
“I helped my stepmom with hers plants. And my foster mom but I’ve never had any that were really mine.” Vanessa answered him. “And I work at a cafe so my schedule is going to be a little weird at times which is why I’m looking for low maintenance.”
***
“I think a jade plant might be just what you’re looking for” He said after listening to what she was looking for. He was glad that she had mentioned needing something low maintenance. Usually people just wanted whatever looked pretty and complained when they died. “They look very nice and you don’t water them often.”
****
“Do you have any that I could look at?” Vanessa asked him. Her stepmom had a lot of different plants but she didn’t think that any of them had been jade plants. Or if she had, she’d never told her that’s what they were.
***
“Absolutely. Give me just one moment.” He said with a small smile before heading into the area where they kept the succulent plants. Picking up one of the smaller ones for her to see, he held it out for her to look at. “With this plant you may have to trim it it once in a while if it starts to look lopsided. But when it comes to watering, you want to wait until the soil is completely dry before watering it again”
****
Vanessa reached out with one hand to touch the pot as Hisoka held it out for her to see. “It’s perfect,” she said with a smile of her own. She already knew exactly where she wanted to put it in her room. And it wasn’t like any of the plants she remembered seeing when she lived with her dad. “If I notice it looking lopsided could I bring it back here the first time so you can show me how much to trim? I don’t want to trim too much.”
***
“Absolutely.” He replied with a nod, glad that he seemed to have made the right choice for her in regards to a first plant. Most people tended not to think plants were ‘pretty’ unless they flowered. “And you can actually place the clippings into soil and grow entirely new ones as well”
***
Part of the reason Vanessa liked the Jade plant was that it didn’t look like it would flower from the one he was showing her. Which mean no petals to have to clean up after they fell off. And there was just something really pretty about the green plant. “How much do I owe you for it?”
***
“I'm glad you like it,” he said with a smile as he told her the price. He lead her to the register to check her out. “If you have any problems with it, bring it back and we'll get everything sorted for you.”
****
Vanessa had been prepared to spend more for her plant so the figure he gave was a very pleasant surprise as she followed him to the register, pulling her wallet out of her pocket so that she could pay him. “Thanks for all of your help. I’ll make sure to come back if I have any questions or problems.” She was going to go home and put this plant on her nightstand where it could get sunshine and brighten up her room. She paid for her plant, holding it carefully as she walked out to the car.
