Haymitch was pretty pleased with the way the business was going, they had a large number of clients all who were happy with what they were doing for them and who, more importantly, were recommending them to others.

Today he’d decided to go and see his teams and his first stop was the marketing department, “Ah Miss Maximoff, how are you doing?” he asked as he found Wanda in front of a computer in the office.

Wanda was working hard and enjoying her job. Currently frowning at the screen, she was analysing some of the marketing used by one of their client’s competitors to see if there was anything they were using to better their reach. Looking up at her boss, she smiled and ran her hand through her hair to push it back from her face. “Mr Haymitch, it’s nice to see you, is everything alright?”

“Everything is fine. I’m doing the rounds and seeing how everybody is after the holidays. I trust you had a good Christmas? Your first in the US correct?” he replied as he moved closer and dropped into a chair near her.

“Oh yes, thank you very much!” Wanda smiled, turning her computer seat to look at her boss. “We had a very nice time, although I have to admit, snow in this part of the country was a bit of a surprise,” she joked, leaning with an elbow on her desk. “I hope yours was pleasant as well?”

“Yeah snow isn’t usual in this part of the country though here it’s becoming a regular thing around Christmas. Most people are entirely unprepared” Haymitch told her, luckily after the first time he’d kitted the house out with jackets, boots and other stuff. “It was. We had a family day of sorts on Christmas and then a group of friends got together over New Year, more social than I’d been all year” he joked.

“Well luckily my brother and I are used to cold weather, although we had hoped to leave all of our winter wear behind,” Wanda joked. “It sounds like you had a great time. It is good to spend time with family,” she smiled at him.

“I’m sure you did but hey at least you were more prepared than the rest of us” Haymitch said, “Yeah, not really used to having one but it was good. How are you and your brother doing with school?”

“Oh fine I believe,” Wanda smiled, brushing her fringe back from her face again. “Pietro runs night and day while eating like a horse and I seem to study so much that I lose time,” she joked, laughing lightly in the hopes it would lessen how bad that sounded. “But everything is fine,” she reassured him confidently.

“Make sure he doesn’t overdo it, or you” he said, “It’s not good to work so much that you forget to eat” Because he had a sneaking suspicion that’s what she did. “Skinny enough already” he added, all girls seemed to be and he didn’t quite understand it. He worried about those he knew, he’d read enough things about anorexia and the like to know how awful it was.

Wanda smiled, a little sadly, knowing he was right. She’d been berated enough over the past few months by Pietro, but it was just how she worked. She got her head down and didn’t stop, generally until someone came and broke her concentration. “I know, it’s hard though. I get so sucked into my work that suddenly hours have gone by when I think it’s only been minutes,” she shrugged.

“You need something you do for fun” Haymitch suggested, “Away from work and school. Your brother has running, you need something. I know you’re putting too many hours in here. I’ve seen the records and I should have been more firm with making you take time back”

“I have fun…” Wanda started defensively, suddenly finding one of the pens on her desk very interesting. “Studying and working is fun for me,” she shrugged. It became that way when she realised it was the only way to make their future what they wanted it to be. Studying had become the norm and a social life was a luxury that wouldn’t get her where she needed to be.

“You are one of the smartest young women I know” Haymitch told her honestly, “But take it from me, you don’t want to look back on your life and have any regrets. Enjoy yourself, you aren’t the sort of person to jeopardise their future for the now but you need to have fun in the now too”

Wanda smiled at the compliment, still keeping her eyes down. “I’ve uh...I’ve never really had interests outside of work before. Other than supporting Pietro with his sports,” she shrugged. “I suppose I could look at the clubs available on campus,” she considered.

“Try out a few things, you never know you may find you have a talent for knitting or pottery or something” Haymitch said with a smile. “It’s always worth having something that takes your mind off things”

“Knitting and pottery?” Wanda asked, casting him a dubious look across the professional distance between them. Smiling she shook her head and laughed. “Isn’t that a little bit of an...old person past-time?” she asked.

“Honestly they’re the first things I thought of” Haymitch admitted, “But you can see what I’m getting at” he added with a wry smile.

“I do, I guess I have just never given it much thought myself,” Wanda admitted a little sadly. “I will have to look into it,” she smiled at him. “I am sure Pietro will be filled with more ideas of how to get his little sister out of the house more. So long as it doesn’t interrupt his meals,” she joked with a laugh.

“Well then I will leave you to discuss it with your brother at home” Haymitch said, “But be sure to let me know if there is anyway we can help here at work”

“Everything here is fine Mr Haymitch, I love my work and I hope you can see that in what I do,” Wanda offered, not wanting him to think that she wasn’t grateful for her position. “There’s not a problem is there?”

“There is definitely not a problem Wanda, your work is amazing and you are highly thought of. I just want to make sure that there’s no pressure on you, even if it’s just pressure you’re putting on yourself. Your university education is important”

“Ok,” Wanda sat back, slightly relieved at his response. There was still a flicker of doubt in the back of her mind which told her she had to work harder and better at her job and her school work. “Thank you for your concern Mr Haymitch,” she smiled, already planning on what she was going to get to back to and how she could improve it.

“You're welcome” he nodded, “Now I better continue my rounds. Good to see you. Let me know how the hobby hunt goes” he grinned before giving a wave as he carried on his way.

“I will do, thank you Mr Haymitch,” Wanda smiled and waved in return before returning to her work. No doubt Pietro would have something to say on the matter.
