Who: Vanessa and Harry
When: Mid-January
Where: Imperial Theater
What: A fated meeting?
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Ever since Vanessa had dreamed about a man performing on a stage and the name ‘Imperial Theater’ she had been wondering if it had been a coincidence or one of her prophetic dreams coming through. Deciding to take matters into her own hands while she had free time after tendering her resignation she went looking for the theater and she found it too.
It didn’t look open yet so Vanessa wandered around the building hoping she may find someone.
Harry was carrying some trash out when he heard a noise. He canted his head around and peered at her. “Hi!” He had been rehearsing by himself when he decided to get out and get some exercise, and since he was the owner of this place, he should do some things to make it better, right? Right.
He dusted off his hands, wiping them on a rag.
“Can I help you with something, miss?”
Turning Vanessa realised this was the man she had seen in her dreams, “Hello” she replied, polite English accent emerging as it did more and more these days. “I’m sorry to intrude but my name is Vanessa Ives and I...well I recently dreamed about this place” which she knew sounded crazy.
Harry smiled, extending his hand, then paused as she said she had dreamed about the place. “Ah… about the theater?” He blinked a bit. “About any theater, or this one in particular?” He hesitated to say that sounded crazy, especially since, well, it sounded kind of like his mom, really, or like she had sounded, so long ago.
“You, ah… saw a vision?”
Vanessa bit her lip before shaking his hand, “Sorry I know that sounds completely crazy and I don’t blame you if you think I’m off my rocker” she told him, “But yes, I believe it was a vision. Of this theater and you performing on a stage”
Harry blinked, then shook his head. “I do perform here, on the stage.” He hesitated. “My mother had visions, when I was young.” Or at least had claimed to. Harry smiled. “This sounds like a conversation we should have. “Would you like some tea?” He waved a hand toward the theater. “I have some brewing inside.”
“That would be lovely, thank you” Vanessa said with a smile and a nod, it was rather nice to meet someone who didn’t immediately think she was crazy. Other than those who had the dreams of course, most of them knew that there was more to the eye than what most people saw in this county. “What sort of visions did your mother have?” she asked as they moved inside.
Harry led her inside, smiling, even as his mind was running a million miles a second. He had no real idea what was going on, but he was hopeful that she would have some answers. The idea of his mother, well, being like this woman, it shot old pain through him. “Ah, yes. She tended to have rather blurry visions of places or people she thought referred to the future, but she was never sure. Her visions were always very out of focus.”
Harry closed his eyes as he led her through familiar halls to his area, where an electric tea kettle was steaming away.
He smiled, as he closed on it. “Please, sit! Looks like tea is almost ready!” he poured the water into the pot, setting blueberry honey in the pot with it, and then turned to sit in one of the chairs. There were several, all of eclectic styles and shapes.
“I’m sorry” Vanessa said, “If it’s hard to talk about please don’t feel you have to” she told him, sensing the pain when he spoke. Visions were hard at the best of times, but obviously it had been hard for his mother who was no longer with him. She didn’t want to bring up old wounds.
“Thank you” Vanessa said, choosing one of the seats and sitting with him, “Have you been a magician for long?” she asked curiously, she hadn’t seen any advertisements.
“It’s okay. It’s been a long time. She was a good woman, and she tried to learn how to control them. I never really believed in them when i was a kid.” He chuckled. “It took me learning magic to think that such things could be real.”
“For most of my life. I started out on a circuit, and loved it so much I never looked back. I’ve spent the last few years performing professionally in shows, theaters, and on television.”
“I can understand that, before the dreams began I would never have believed it either. I still sometimes struggle with believing it’s all real now” she admitted, with a wry smile. It was a strange things to wake up one day and realise you were seeing the future in visions.
“I spent a number of years producing a psychic television show, though I’ve recently decided to change career paths” It was hard to produce something so obviously fake now that she had actual real visions herself.
“You dream too? I am still having trouble believing my dreamself is an actual wizard. I’m just a measly magician.” He shook his head. Life was getting stranger and stranger, and he was just not used to this!
Harry grinned. “Yeah? I probably watched it when i was traveling!” He grinned at her. “Ever performed on stage with a magician?” He grinned wider.
“I am sure you are far from measly” Vanessa replied, “Perhaps some of the dream skills will make their way over though and you’ll find your act has a real magical quality to it”
“Then I apologise now if you did” she smiled before laughing, “I can’t say I have no”
Harry chuckled. “You’d be surprised. Compared to what dream me does, I’m rather boring.” He snapped his fingers and the teapot poured into two mugs, and the tea bag slipped to a small plate beside them. he handed one tea cup over, carefully.
“Careful. it’s warm.”
He chuckled again. “Now, now. I’m sure your show was interesting. And that you would be interesting on stage.”
“I wouldn’t call that boring at all!” Vanessa told him with a bright smile, it was rather incredible. She was still looking in wonder before she made herself focus once again.
“Interesting is too kind for that show” she told him before chuckling, “Oh I think I’d probably get stage fright” it was a fun idea but not likely to happen.
Harry flushed, then grinned at her. “Thank you, miss.” He raised an eyebrow. “Why? You’re smart, pretty, and you have a kind of magnetism in your eyes. And if you are used to talking on a show, a stage is just the same, really.” Not really, but he told people that. It was more intense, in his opinion.
“But, to whit… what else happened in your vision?”
“Thank you, that is very kind. But I was a producer not a presenter, the only talking I did was off air to the crew” Vanessa explained, she could never have hosted it.
“I saw you performing a trick on the stage, the name of the theatre and then a few flashes of things. Crowds, applause, that kind of thing” she replied, “I’m not sure why or what it could mean”
Harry smiled. “Aha. Well, that takes a lot of talent, too. I’m sure you were good.” He nodded.
“I dunno. I mean, I’m giving a show here in a few days, a week or so, really. Maybe it was that, you saw?” He got a grin on his face. “Care to come that night? I could spot you a ticket?”
“Maybe it was” Vanessa smiled, “Perhaps I am meant to be there. I would happily purchase a ticket” she told him, he didn’t need to give her a ticket. After all she was a complete stranger who had turned up randomly talking about visions.
“Are you sure? I can comp it.” He smiled at her, then nodded. “You being there will be fun. I’ll hope to see if you can spot the magic.” He always liked a challenge.
“I’m positive, I’d like to support you and your act as much as I can” Vanessa said, “And I look forward to seeing if I can spot anything” She was rather partial to a challenge herself.
“Thank you, Vanessa. In that case, maybe you would like to be my guest when I do the show on television, also. If you like is this time, that is.” He grinned at her.
“My family has worked on honing different secrets for generations. Which is why my act tends to be different from most. No sawing people in half.” He chuckled.
“Then I look forward to it even more” she told him, “I do love a good show and yours promises to be among the best I think”
Harry gave her a half bow, seated as he was, and then smirked at her. “Now we should drink tea, and eat crumpets, and enjoy the afternoon, and you can tell me more about this show you did, yes?”
Harry smiled. Not the most usual sort of friend he had made, but… he liked her smile. He had a feeling he would see her more often.
“I think that’s a marvellous idea” Vanessa told him with a nod, pleased to have made a friend even if it had been in a most unusual way. Perhaps her vision had led her to him for a reason, perhaps not but she was glad it had.
