Scott was hurrying. He wanted, like burning, to get to the local coffee shop and just enjoy a quiet hour or two, with minimal glancing at his books. he had done his homework, and done his observations, and he had worked this morning, and he was tired. He had nothing going on tonight and he just wanted a little time to defrag his brain so he didn’t explode. Working and going to school, both fulltime, were a lot harder than he had known. His respect level for his mom, who had done this long before, rose every week.
Whatever the reasons, though, he was hurrying as he came around a corner on foot and spotted the cafe, and slowed, grinning. “Yes!”
he thought he would never get there! Traffic had been terrible, the busses had been late, and there had been a major accident at Seventh. And all of this after work, where one cat had been acting weird, and worrying Scott a lot.
As he turned the corner, he spotted someone out of the corner of his eyes, realized he was going to run into them, and dodged sideways, tripped over his own feet, and faceplanted into the sidewalk.
“Ow.”
Simon had been a vampire now for about two months, which was actually longer than in his dreams so it was a little frustrating that he’d taken to it quicker in the dreams than in real life, but he supposed it made sense since there were more supernatural creatures around him on a regular basis in the dreams and with the threat of Valentine weighing down on them, he had to learn much quicker.
He’d been getting blood from Magnus who was borrowing it from the hospital, which meant he was conjuring it straight out of the blood banks. Sure, it was stealing in a way, but it was all Simon could do right now to survive. With the steady diet of blood, he was able to go out and be amongst regular people without getting the urge to attack anyone. He didn’t want a repeat of when he’d drank Izzy’s blood.
Speaking of Izzy, Simon had decided to pay her a visit at Baxter’s and was walking down the street, towards the bakery when he saw someone running towards him. The guy didn’t appear to be running towards him exactly, but was running in his direction and without even thinking, Simon’s vamp speed kicked in and he moved out of the way at the same time the guy tried to dodge him and before Simon knew it, the guy was on the ground.
“Crap, are you alright?” Simon asked, crouching down beside the guy, wanting to make sure that he wasn’t hurt.
Scott rolled over, and rubbed his nose, glad he hadn’t broken it, or even gotten a bloody nose. Man, it hurt, though! He nodded, slowly. “yeah, I’m okay. Just hurt my pride, mostly.” He rubbed his nose gingerly. “I was headed for the cafe, just hoping for some down time. Guess I let my enthusiasm get ahold of me.” Scott smiled apologetically, and lopsidedly. “Sorry if I almost hit you.”
Simon extended a hand to the guy who was still on the ground, “It’s okay. I’ve been in the same situation a couple times actually.” Before he’d become a vampire, Simon have been known to trip over a smooth surface once or twice, but now he had pretty fantastic reflexes. “If that cafe was Baxter’s, then you’re making a good choice.” Even if Izzy didn’t work there, Simon would have frequented the bakery, because of the sparkling milk lattes alone.
Scott met his hand with his own, and accepted his help to stand, then shook the man’s hand. “Thanks. I’m Scott.” He grinned.
He nodded vigorously. “Always. It’s got a great area to study in, and they never seem to mind if I hang out over my tea and study in the corner with the outlet. “ He loved to study and hang out there. It seemed like a good place, a warm place, and he had noted that everyone was treated well. If he wasn’t well on his way on his chosen career, he might have chosen to work in a place like that.
“I’m working on my second-level veterinary degree.”
“It is a pretty great place. One of my friends sort of co-runs the place.” He wasn’t exactly sure what Isabelle’s exact job description was, but he knew that she was at least the assistant manager and did a lot of the baking. “I’m Simon.” He helped Scott to his feet and shook his hand back, “That’s pretty impressive. I play guitar in a band. Haven’t decided yet if I’m going back to school.” He knew that he probably should as a backup in case things didn’t go as planned with the band, but he wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to major in.
“Yeah? Cool! That’s pretty awesome.” Scott liked people, not as much as animals, but still. Even having been a loner, he still thought people were cool. “Nice to meet you, Simon.” He grinned.
“Oh yeah? I wish I could play. I don’t have a musical note in my body.” He loved music, but he had a terrible tone, and every time he sang, even animals looked at him like he was being mean. “Well, it’s a big step, going back to school. I’m only really doing it because I want a permanent position as a veterinarian, and that means the higher degree. If I could just work with what i have now, I would.” He liked learning, and was smart, but he just wanted to work, and juggling school and work was hard.
“It took awhile for me to learn. Taught myself.” Simon said, running a hand through his hair once Scott was on his feet again, “I’ve always wanted to be a rockstar, so I was really determined and then I met some other guys who also wanted to become rockstars and the rest is history.” Of course they were far from becoming rockstars, but at least they were beginning to get some gigs and with Simon starting to gain control over his vampirism, they would be able to keep those gigs and not risk Simon snacking on anyone who came to see them play.
“Yeah? That’s cool.” Scott grinned. This guy seemed pretty cool. “Well, that’s kind of awesome. Where do you play?” He would totally come watch Simon’s band. Not that he had a lot of disposable income, but he had some! He could try, anyway.
“Sounds like you know what you want and you’re going after it.”
“Our next gig is actually at a club around the corner.” Kirk was the one who had gotten this current gig after spending a night flirting with one of the bartenders, “Right now we’re called Fluorescent Roadkill.” He reached into his bag and pulled out a slightly wrinkled flyer and held it out towards Scott, “Don’t be surprised if the next time you see a flyer our name is different.” Simon couldn’t even count the number of names the band had had now.
Scott grinned wider. “Awesome! That is a cool name for a band!“ He took the flyer and nodded. “Can I hang on to this?” He liked the name, and he hoped to catch the gig, too. It sounded sort of like the kind of music he liked.
Maybe he could even bring Allison to the thing. If she was free.
Did she even have a boyfriend? Would it be weird to bring a friend to a concert/gig/thing? Scott had no idea, but now he had to ask.
Simon nodded, “Sure. I’ve got more that I’m actually dropping off at Baxters.” Simon checked to make sure that the other flyers weren’t as wrinkled as the one he’d handed Scott, “Speaking of Baxters, you said you were on your way there too? We should probably stop blocking the sidewalk then.”
Scott grinned and nodded, extended his hand to the other man and nodded. “Thanks, again. And yeah, we should. I need to rest and study and just breathe for awhile.”
And he headed for the cafe, grinning.
“Well Baxters is definitely a good place to do that.” Simon said as they turned back in the direction of Baxter’s and started walking. The fact that Simon hadn’t tried to bite Scott was definitely a plus on the ‘Gaining Control of Being a Vampire’ scale and it was entirely possible that he might make a new friend out of this encounter. Simon was definitely okay with that.
