There was a lot about the OC that Katou wasn’t a huge fan of. The times when monsters invaded weren’t one of those times. Killing monsters was one of the only things Katou felt like he was good at. It was hard work, for sure, but there was nothing quite as satisfying as plunging Kira’s sword through whatever monsters came his way.
They were pretty easy to kill, for the most part. He’d gotten knocked around a couple of times before he realized that he couldn’t use his astral powers to increase his speed or his strength, but he’d gotten the hang of it pretty soon. There was a time when he probably wouldn’t have done as well. In his dreams he’d relied mostly on the well of astral power he had - he was a sloppy fighter, a brawler, really, but the increased speed and strength helped him take down most of his opponents.
Luckily, his training with Izzy had improved his technique, and now he was a pretty decent fighter even without the extras. Having five very sharp blades attached to his fingers didn’t hurt either.
It did get boring though. He’d ran into a couple of people over the last couple of days, but for the most part, he was very, very alone. It reminded him a little bit of Hades from his dreams. The dense fog, the ghoulies that would pop up from nowhere, how everything seemed to be twisted and rather grotesque. Had he known his phone would act as a warning device, he probably would have kept it on him. As it was, once he realized he didn’t get any reception outside of his home, he’d decided to leave it there.
The abandoned shops kind of made it worth it. He was eating a sandwich that he’d taken from one of the grocery stores, washing it down with some whiskey he’d gotten from the same place. And he was eyeing up a nice 60” flat screen TV, trying to decide if it would look good in his living room or not. It wasn’t looting if no one was around, was it?
He was still eyeing it up when he noticed something moving behind him. Something… bigger than any of the monsters he’d killed so far. He let the half-eaten sandwich fall from his hand, grabbed his sword from beside him, and spun around just in time to block the blade that nearly cut him in two, and then he jumped backward to take a better look at the creature.
His stomach dropped to his feet as he looked upon it. Four wings, black as night, sprouted from it’s back. Its long, wild, black hair didn’t frame a face, but it did have a slit filled with very pointy teeth where it’s mouth should have been. It’s four arms all ended in blades, as though its forearms had been removed and replaced with swords.
Katou felt a chill of fear start from the base of his neck, and it travelled all the way to his toes. And almost immediately, his fear gave way to rage. He dropped the bottle of whiskey so he could have both hands on his sword, and as the bottle shattered at his feet, he leapt forward.
“Lucifer!” Katou screamed, flinging himself at the creature. It caught him in the stomach and he could feel the blade sinking into his flesh before he was flung into one of the display shelves. The shelf fell with a crash, but Katou rolled away as soon as he could. Just as well, as one of the creatures blades stabbed down to where Katou had landed.
He got to his feet and put some distance between him and the beast. Glancing down, he was glad to see that the wound wasn’t that deep. Perhaps it would be more debilitating to someone with a human body, but, well, Katou wasn’t human no more. But he was going to need to calm down - he couldn’t just go rushing in headlong anymore.
“Gonna have to do better than that,” Katou said, still backing up as the creature advanced. “See, I’m a real nice monster too.”
He had no idea if it could understand him, but it hesitated nevertheless and Katou took that moment to charge it again. The monster, expecting an attack, swung for him, but Katou ducked under it’s arms, came up behind it, and sunk his sword into its back, right where its heart should have been.
The creature let out a roar and spun toward him, wrenching the sword from his grasp. It struck Katou again, sending him flying down the aisle.
“Oh-kay,” Katou said, eyeing the creature. His sword had run it completely through; he could see the blade protruding from its chest. “No heart then. Got it. Man, you really outta tell people these things,” Katou said.
He was starting to get a little worried though. In his dreams, he’d given up his humanity so he could do what needed to be done. To destroy Lucifer, Katou had to destroy the world. And he’d done that. He’d broken the Egg of Wormwood, and rained destruction down on Heaven, Hell, and Earth.
And Lucifer had still gotten away unscathed.
There were a lot of things Katou regretted in his life. He hadn’t visited his father when he was sick, he hadn’t gone to his wake or his funeral. He’d attacked his sister on her wedding night and then not gone to her wedding, and even if she had forgiven him for that, Katou wasn’t sure if he forgave himself for that. He’d spent five years of his life doing things he regretted, all while claiming he regretted nothing. But single-handedly destroying half of creation just to kill one man, and then having that man get away, ranked pretty high.
“Shit, shit, fuck,” Katou said, ducking and weaving as he stepped backwards, trying to avoid the monsters arms as it swung wildly at him.
He backed into the wall, which was bad, but as he turned his head to the side, he caught sight of the fire extinguisher. He ripped it off the wall and held it above his head just in time for one of the monster’s blades to cut into it, sending white foam everywhere.
“You ain’t shit compared to the real deal,” Katou sang, regaining his composure. Eyes squeezeed tight, he jumped toward the struggling creature, grabbed it by the throat with his biomechanical arm, and then flexed his finger blades. The creatures head came off with a rather sickening crunch.
And then struck him in the back with one of it’s blades. For a terrifying moment, Katou was afraid that it was still kicking, but it just seemed to be the creature's death throes, and it fell first to its knees, and then flat on it’s face.
“Holy shit,” Katou breathed, out of breath as he wrenched his sword from the monster’s back. “That… that was something.”
He’d skip taking the TV. Right now he needed to get home, dress his wounds, and maybe text someone to come heal him. “I need a fucking smoke.” Luckily, there was a gas station he could grab a carton from on his way home.
