Rating: Low
Status: Complete!
A road trip with Elena was just what Caroline needed. Balancing school and work and all her social obligations had been more difficult than she expected. Especially during finals and yes her new boyfriend did take up a lot of her free time. But of course she missed her best friend and knew Elena was going through a lot lately with her sister and ex boyfriend. Some time away was needed, plus it would be good to have some bestie time with interruption or distraction.
Today they were spending time at the beach. Because well Caroline loved the beach. It was still pretty cool in Tijuana but not snowing like back home. Caroline had a pina colada because beaches called for a tropical drink okay? But was dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt. She did have her bathing suit in the car, but right now she was just content to sit with her friend and watch the waves, with her drink of course.
“We should do things like this more often,” Caroline said sipping her drink. “Just get away for at least a few days. Orange County is too much drama,” that was probably the understatement of the century. Not only was there personal drama, but pile on the weird crap that happened on top of it? Yeah it was a mess.
Putting a pause on her life back home was amazing. She promised herself not to talk about or even think about Damon or Katherine. Jeremy wanted her to make amends with her twin, which she understood to a degree, but getting there seemed a little thorny. So, she wanted to ignore the elephant in the room by leaving it altogether.
What better way than basking in the sunshine far, far away from the OC’s freak weather?
“Tell me about it,” Elena said with a sigh into her own drink, a melting frozen margarita. “This is the best alternative, thanks for this, Care. Cheers?” With a perky smile, she lifted her glass to Caroline for a proper toast. “And here’s to the only extra dreams I’ll have this week… be the random one on the drive here. Sorry for falling asleep like that! I’m the worst road trip company ever!”
“Cheers!” Caroline replied with a smile to match Elena’s on her face. She clinked her drink against her best friend’s before taking another sip. There was no need for Elena to thank her. She was more than willing to do whatever she could to make her friend feel better and a break from Orange County was always a good idea.
“That just means on the way back you’re driving,” she teased. “So where are you at now anyway? Am I still human?” Elena obviously knew that Caroline eventually turned into a vampire in the dreams what with her being one in real life and everything. So it wasn’t like Caroline was spoiling anything if Elena hadn’t gotten to that part yet. It happened fairly early on in Caroline’s dreams but given where Elena was the last time they had discussed it she wasn’t sure Elena had reached that part yet.
In spite of the ups and downs in her relationship with Damon and Katherine over the past year, she had lucked out with Caroline. Her friendship was better than ever. That they could get away and do practically whatever they wanted without letting it spoil them was amazing, too. Sometimes a little distance helped get some perspective. All the woes from the OC seemed that much farther away.
“Yep, still human,” Elena nodded. “I’ve met Damon, who is... “ She wrinkled her nose at that. “Attractive, but terrible. I’ve apparently only got eyes for Stefan, which is… going to get a little weird, I think. They’re just dreams though. Anyway, Stefan joined the football team, and… oh yeah, you had a thing with Damon.”
It was a little difficult not to laugh at the prospect, given their real life dynamics. Swallowing the smile quickly, concern flashed across her face. “Sorry, it’s not funny. I know it’s in the past and probably not real, just the thought of you two together here is… pretty crazy. So, that was weird to dream.”
Caroline could actually relate on the only having eyes for Stefan front. That was exactly how her dreamself currently felt which was just weird. Here Stefan was practically her brother and she had a boyfriend who was not from Mystic Falls thank goodness. Caroline did however laugh along with Elena at the thought of her and Damon. “Ugh, don’t remind me. That was just no. But don’t worry about it. The dreams are just weird in general.” It probably was beyond strange though for Elena to dream about her best friend with her real life ex boyfriend. There was no way in hell Caroline would ever get with Damon though. For one she pretty much hated the guy, but more importantly she wasn’t Katherine. She would never do that to Elena.
“How do you feel, about you and Stefan?” she asked getting a bit more serious now. None of Caroline’s dream feelings had bled over for any of guys she fell for in the dreams. But she knew that was a thing for some people.
“”He’s my friend,” Elena answered easily enough, though appeared to be wrestling with it. She stared out at the view ahead in the hopes it would ease her thoughts. She couldn’t make up her mind about how she felt about the dreams now that they’d started rolling out the issues.
“I mean, it’s weird, y’know?” She glanced over at Caroline, seemingly hesitant. It wasn’t because she didn’t think she could confide in her friend, far from it. The words were what troubled her, Elena couldn’t make heads or tails of where the line between dreams and reality ended.
“Of course you know,” Elena interjected quickly, head shaking. “I don’t feel that way for him here, but watching it or… I guess… experiencing it in my dreams makes me second guess it? But, it doesn’t matter. If it does bleed over, I’m so not going there. One Salvatore brother is enough. I love Stefan, just not like that.”
“I get it,” because she did. Caroline had so many dream boyfriends but none of the feelings carried over. Especially not for Stefan. The guy was basically her brother. Elena and Stefan though. That was different. They had this epic romance going on. At least her dreamself thought so.
“Totally. Dating siblings is just weird,” she wrinkled her nose. “You don’t want to be like Damon.” Not to mention it was kind of gross too. But apparently not everyone felt that way.
While she’d only danced on precipice of whatever epic tale was in store for them, Elena had made up her mind. She didn’t want to let the dreams dictate her life, and she certainly didn’t want to be like Katherine. Going after both Salvatores was right up Katherine’s alley, though that might have been unfair. She was a tiny bit biased against her these days.
“Or Katherine,” she mumbled. “Damon mentioned her in my dreams, but it’s weird since we’re not related. Maybe it’s better that way for dream Elena? I’ll find out eventually, I guess…”
Shifting around in her seat, Elena mustered up a hasty smile. She didn’t want this trip away from the OC to be a downer. With any luck, she’d be light on any more dreams, too. This was about relaxing and forgetting their worries!
“In the meanwhile, we’ve got Mexico! Maybe I can hook up with a guy here?” She joked. She’d been trying to flirt and play the field, but her heart wasn’t really in it. Her expression suddenly softened as she looked at Caroline again. “I’m really glad you’re here, Care. This is great. This was definitely needed.”
“You totally should! I’m your designated wing woman from now on,” it would have been fun to be single together but oh well. Caroline could still help her friend have some fun and when her friends were happy Caroline was happy. “To a great trip!”
