Who: Baby and Katou
What: Having cake after an NA meeting
When: [Backdated] Early November
Where: Random building
Rating/Warnings: Teenish/Language, some light talk about sex
Status: Closed/Completed Gdoc
Katou had been hesitant when he had first come to NA. Most of the people there were a good deal older than Katou, which was awkward. And Katou was never really one to talk about his past troubles or his present ones. The “higher power” was a concept that Katou’d had trouble wrapping his head around, especially since he’d expected his dreams to end with him literally killing the monumental asshole that was God, but someone had explained to him that it didn’t have to be God, and so he’d chosen Setsuna to be his higher power.
Really, the biggest draw was listening to other people. He hadn’t expected to hear his own story mirrored so often in what other people had said. Abusive parents, running away, someone who’d been there when they’d been at their lowest, offering a pill that could make their pain go away. It made him feel a little less alone, and the amount of people who’d congratulated him on recognizing the problem and kicking it while he was so young made him feel a little proud of himself.
The meeting had been someone’s NA birthday, and so Katou thought he’d stick around to offer them congratulations on being five years sober. It seemed like such a long time to him, and he wondered if he’d ever make it a year, let alone five. But he mostly stuck around so he could eat some chocolate cake and drink some coffee. He’d taken to wearing a hoodie when he was out and about, even on hot California days, in order to hide his new mechanical arm (though he refused to wear gloves over his hand), and he was wearing an Exploited hoodie, the hood pulled over his head.
There were days that the urge to use was too strong for Baby, and she had to have a little bit of help. The NA meetings weren't so bad, boring sure, but being there helped Baby not to feel as if she was that alone. That in and of itself was enough help curb the craving for the evening.
Rather it was most of the time. Tonight she was still feeling the urge even after the meeting had concluded, but thankfully enough there was the NA birthday so she thought it might be in her best interest to stay a little longer just to be on the safe side since she wasn't exactly sure that she could trust herself tonight.
Baby reached up to run her fingers through her hair as she walked over to the table that housed the cake and coffee. She wasn't much of a coffee drinker, so she opted for a bottle of water and a small slice of cake. Baby let out a long breath, and turned around only to see a familiar face. "Hey," she gave a small jerk of her chin in Katou's direction, "doing alright?"
Katou looked up and gave a bit of a smile when he saw Baby. He shrugged noncommittally at her question. The truth was, Wendy, the girl woman who, over the past few months, had become a bit like a big sister and a mother all rolled into one, and Jin, his (now ex) boyfriend, had both decided to move across the world within weeks of one another. He was a little hurt, and more than a little pissed off at the world. “As well as I can be, I guess. How ‘bout you? Things alright? Tried any cake yet?” To punctuate his statement, he took a bite of the cake that was in his hand.
Baby lifted a shoulder before she plopped down into a seat. "Same old shit, just a different day. Nothing really to report in the world of Baby." She laughed, the sound higher pitched than it normally was before she shook her head, "Not yet. I hope it tastes better than it looks." Baby didn't really care if anyone overheard her or not, she was who she was and most of the people in the group knew that. "I was having an off day, figured I'd come by for a little help is all." She figured he'd understand, probably better than anyone else here come to that, but Baby didn't say that outloud. She took a bite of cake finally, and it did, in fact, taste better than it looked.
Katou snorted. “So long as it’s chocolatey, I don’t give a fuck what it tastes like.” When he quit, he’d dealt with his cravings with chocolate. It probably hadn’t been the greatest of ideas, since now Katou ate more chocolate than was probably healthy, but he figured it was probably better than heroin. “Something happen, or is it just one of those days?”
Baby chuckled at Katou's words, and then swallowed her bit of cake. Turning one addiction for another was quite common, or she'd heard that at least. Hers, at first, had been cigarettes but she'd cut back a lot over the last few years. There were other things she was addicted to, but none as bad as the drugs that she'd once done. "Just one of those days." She responded with a shrug of her shoulders. "How about you?" She asked, and then took another bite of her cake.
“Every day’s One of Those Days lately,” Katou muttered bitterly, more to himself than for Baby’s benefit. He frowned a little. His problems were his own and he didn’t really need to go off blabbing to anyone who would listen, but that was kind of the whole point to NA wasn’t it? “It feels like everyone I care about is gonna pack up and move to the other side of the world, you know?”
Baby frowned and gave a small sideways tip of her head. The holidays were the roughest out of the year for her too. It wasn't as if she had any desire to go see her family, or get involved in their shit again so it got lonely. Just thinking about the holidays made her want to find a dealer and well.. Still she couldn't do that, she had to stay sober. Swallowing a bite, she glanced over at Katou when he began talking about people leaving. Words of comfort weren't something she was typically good at, and she tried to think of something that she could say that would be comforting. "Been there." She murmured as she picked at her cake, "It sucks, that's for sure, but I doubt everyone is going to do that to you. You can still go visit them sometime though, right? Or skype, or text." That was the great thing about technology, you could stay connected somehow with people.
“Can’t have sex with a computer,” Katou joked, breaking into a sly smile. “But yeah, it’s not like they’re totally outta my life I guess. Just gotta take a little more effort outta my day to talk to them.” Which was a relief. Katou dreamed of being a teenager in the nineties, so he had some vague notion that he was lucky with today’s technology, so far as keeping in touch with people who decided to move to the other side of the world. “And I ain’t never really been outta California, let alone England or Korea, so visiting would probably be fun.”
Baby giggled, "Fair enough, but you can put on quite a show for that special someone." She gave Katou a look with a waggle of her brows. Baby wasn't shy when it came to sex, or putting on shows for people. Her line of work attested to that. "There you go! See, there's a silver lining to it all." Baby hadn't ever been out of the country either, although she'd seen a lot of it with her adopted brother Otis. That sonofabitch was exactly where he belonged though, and she had refused to write to him or take any of his calls when she'd been home. "I'm sure you'll figure it out though. The time thing, and I'm sure that they'll appreciate it." Time, it was such a precious commodity in today's world.
Katou let out a short bark of a laugh. “There is that, I guess,” he said. “See? This is why I like you,” he said, tapping his forehead. “Always full of good ideas.”
"I have my moments." Baby replied with a wide smile, and sideways tip of her head. Baby had personally never done anything like that, but she thought that it could be a lot of fun especially with the right partner. Baby took another bite of her cake, nearly finished with it, "I hope that you get it figured out." She offered with a smile, before eating the last bit of her cake.
“Me too,” Katou muttered. “And I hope you do too. I mean, not when you can fit in a cam show for someone on the other side of the world, but everything else.” He frowned thoughtfully, then pulled out the sharpie he always kept on him (who knew when one would run into a bathroom stall, a park bench, or the face of a passed out friend that needed vandalising) and scrawled his number on a napkin. “You can like, call me if you ever wanna talk and don’t feel like going to a meeting or something.”
"I figure it'll all work itself out." Baby replied with a small shrug of her shoulder, "And hey, I might have to work on that sometime." She gave Katou a wink and grin, then accepted the scribbled number. "Thanks, I'll shoot you a text so you have my number, and you can do the same." Hell, she figured that they could both be there for each other because one never knew what the next day might bring.
