Nothing weird had happened since Henry had moved into his new apartment and for a brief moment, Henry thought maybe he’d wouldn’t experience anymore dream crossover. He’d already been locked in his apartment and short of transporting him to an abandoned subway, what more could the dreams possibly do?
The handgun that magically appeared on his coffee table on morning earlier in the week was cause for some concern. He recognized it as the gun he had found in his Dream Apartment. Despite that, he texted Revy and asked her if maybe she had left one of her guns at his place during a visit over the weekend.
Of course she hadn’t. And Henry knew she hadn’t. And she was right about another thing: no matter where he lived, his Dreams were going to catch up with him and things were going to happen. Henry didn’t like the idea that he was being prepared for something.
He did as Revy said and put the gun in the drawer of his bedside table and tried not to think about it. He went about his business the rest of that day and the next. By the time he went to bed more than 24 hours after discovering the gun, he’d pretty much forgotten about it.
The clock on his bedside table blared 11:30 pm in large red letters when a terrific crash launched Henry from a Dreamless sleep to stark consciousness. He lay in bed, eyes wide open and staring at his clock. At first he tried to convince himself that he’d dreamed the noise and it was alright to return to his normally scheduled sleep cycle. However, sleep refused to return to him and Henry found he had to get up and investigate the noise if he was ever going to sleep again.
Henry pushed himself up and out of bed. He paused to look at his night table and for reasons he couldn’t really explain, he took the gun out from inside it. He crossed the hall from his bedroom into the bathroom and clicked on the light. And there it was; the hole in the wall between his sink and the toilet. The same hole that had had appeared in his Dream Apartment. The same hole that had changed the entire course of his Dreams.
Henry approached it slowly. He knew nothing was going to come crawling out of it, but he was still cautious. Just like in his Dreams, where Henry should have seen into his neighbor’s apartment, he saw only darkness. There was the sound of air moving from inside. It was cool against his face and smelled musty, like earth and broken cement. As he stood there in the utter silence of his bathroom, Henry heard something inside the hole. A whisper speaking quickly, but too softly for him to properly make out what was being said. Yet, despite that, he knew it was calling to him, urging him to crawl inside and see just where the hole would lead to
He didn’t want to. He had no desire to crawl anywhere and he was afraid what he would find on the other side. However, despite that fear, he reached out towards the cracked opening in his wall as it bade him to. As if someone else was pushing him forward Henry moved closer still and peered inside. The air tousled his shaggy hair out from over his eyes. That whispering intensified, demanding him to follow and before Henry realized what he was doing, much less stop himself, he’d crawled inside.
It was well after midnight when Henry Townshend disappeared into the hole.
