It was possible that Anna had gone through an entire bottle of wine on her own. Not very likely, but possible. The evening had been spent hugging people, dancing and singing, proclaiming her love for cheese and crackers, and cuddling up against Ezra. She’d woken up a few days ago feeling strong emotions for Ezra all over again, but she’d learned a thing or two during the ten days when she didn’t think she was in love with him. Her feelings were strong, but… love? Really? Anna wanted true love so badly, she’d convinced herself she already had it when she hadn’t.
A skunk spray painted black is still a skunk, no matter how many times you call it a ‘pretty kitty.’
Anna came out of the bathroom with freshly washed hands, and glanced around. People seemed to be having a good time, hanging around and chatting. She wandered down the hall and out through the back sliding glass door to settle on a bench and look up at the stars.
Ezra had split his time so far between Anna and Stefan. The whole situation was still a little awkward for him. But he was close with two out of the four people throwing the party so avoiding it wasn’t exactly an option. Which is exactly why he was focussing on those two.
At the moment though he was alone. Stefan was busy with some brunette and he had no idea where Anna had wandered off to. He didn’t want to disturb his friend and he did miss his red headed companion. Plus it was getting close to midnight. He would be lying if he said he didn’t want to kiss her. So off to find her he went.
After walking around for a bit he finally spotted her sitting outside by herself. Ezra made his way outside settling next to her on the bench. “What are you doing all by yourself?” he asked draping an arm around her shoulders. It was hardly like Anna to be alone. She seemed to be enjoying mingling (and hugging everyone) earlier.
Anna turned to look when Ezra came over. Her eyes were half-lidded, and she was smiling dreamily. The girl was tipsy, but happy. Anna was a happy girl, she was also a happy drunk. And Ezra’s arm around her shoulders was warm, his body was soft. She snuggled in against him. “...I had to pee and it was really hot in there. Besides… the stars were calling to me. You know, I wished on stars? Sometimes. I mean, I do that when there are shooting stars.”
Anna also said whatever was on her mind when she was drunk. Ezra chuckled at her explanation until they got to the stars part. He had wished on stars a few weeks ago and the wish came true for a bit. His friend mentioned the same thing happened to her and it was apparently something going around Orange County. Did Anna do the same? “And what do you wish for?”
“I wished that I didn’t hurt anymore. I wished that I didn’t love you? That I didn’t think I loved you, or … I don’t know.” Anna sighed, closing her eyes. She turned to cuddle in against his shoulder, breathing in his spicy, musky scent. “...I was crying. I don’t remember what I said.” It didn’t really matter now, did it? They were fine, and the moon was bright, and they were about to countdown to 2016. “What time is it?” She added, sounding very sleepy.
Well that certainly explained her odd behavior over the holidays. But he wasn’t sure what to make of it all. He was smart enough to figure out that she had been crying because of their little incident before finals. Of course he felt bad, guilty even. But lying to her and saying he loved her when he didn’t wouldn’t have been fair to either of them. Maybe this was all too much for her. “I’m sorry.”
He didn’t want to think about that now though. They could just enjoy the New Year together. He glanced at his watch. “It’s five minutes to midnight,” he told her, wrapping his arm tightly around her shoulder. “We should get you to bed soon.”
“Not before midnight!” Anna's voice may have been sleepy, but it maintained the energy that followed her everywhere. She broke into a somewhat loopy smile. “It's new year's eve. I have to watch the ball drop. I have to countdown to 2016.” She insisted, sitting up to get a better look at him. “What's your new year's resolution? Do you have one for this year?”
“Well you can’t see the ball drop from out here,” Ezra said replied with a laugh. “Come on, let’s get you inside. We can watch the ball drop in your room.” That way Anna could just pass out after, because it looked like she was about to.
Arm still wrapped around her, he helped her up and led her back into the bedroom. “New year’s resolutions aren’t exactly my thing,” he said finally answering her question. He didn’t believe in them. He had tried making one a few times but they always broke after the first few weeks. “Do you have one?”
“Mmmph.” Anna said, then wrapped her arm around him to help herself to her feet, then leaned heavily against his shoulder as he moved her inside. “...really?” She asked, unable to stop grinning her sleepy grin. “Well… I don’t know. I think maybe I should resolve to figure out what the heck I’m doing with my life. Have some sort of a plan or a goal or something. Since I don’t have one of those.” She pushed the door open to her bedroom. It was pretty clean, considering they were having a party, Anna wanted to make sure it was presentable.
“I know I should do something like run a marathon or something. But I just can’t try for something like that when I’m taking so many classes.” She moved to flop down on the bed.
“Art curator?” he suggested. She was an Art History major after all. It seemed like the logical jump. He couldn’t help but laugh at her next comment. “Why exactly should you run a marathon?” that was random hence the laughing.
He turned on her TV so she could watch the ball drop, still standing. It didn’t seem like a good idea to sit down on her bed with her, actually he wasn’t even sure if it was appropriate to be in her room.
“Maybe,” Anna said. She couldn’t deny that was one of the things that many in her field of research went into. But she wasn’t sure that was for her. At least not yet. She was still toying around with the idea of doing something a little less in tune with the public; a private gallery consultant or something like that. That seemed to be more up her alley.
“I don’t know.” Anna shrugged, sitting back up again to look over at the television. They had only a minute to go. Good thing they came in when they did. “Isn’t that one thing people do when they’re bettering themselves?”
“I suppose,” Ezra replied stepping closer to Anna. The ball was about to drop. He could hear the countdown. Might as well start the New Year off right. As soon as he heard the one he bent down placing a soft kiss on her lips. With Anna being drunk he would feel guilty with anything more heated than that. Like he was taking advantage. “Happy New Year, Anna.”
His kiss was returned, just as gently. Anna didn’t mind having a sweet kiss rather than a raunchy one. It almost felt like it meant more that he was being so kind and thoughtful.
“Happy New Year, Ezra,” Anna said with a smile. “And many more to come.”
