It was still cold out, which was kinda nice. Anna was wearing her cute coat, her hair was curled, she had ear muffs on, and gloves to match. She looked positively adorable and for good reason; she was going on a date with Ezra. Having spent ten days not freaking out over her feelings for him, she was just starting to come to understand what those feelings were. Was it love? Maybe, maybe not. More likely it wasn’t actually love. She felt like she wanted it so bad, she was forcing things. Now that she’d gone through such a roller coaster, she was seeing things in a different light.
Anna stood outside the restaurant. Ezra had texted to let her know he had the tickets for the movie, and was walking over. Thankfully, there was a nice place about a block from the movie theater, so they could eat then walk to the show. She fiddled with her phone while she waited.
After purchasing their tickets Ezra headed over to the restaurant where Anna was waiting. He was in a long sleeved blue collared shirt that brought out the blue in his eyes, nice pants and a coat because it was still snowing in Orange County for some reason. He hadn’t seen Anna since Christmas Eve which was only a few days ago but still he was looking forward to seeing her again.
As as as as as he approached the restaurant he spotted her immediately, looking as adorable as ever. “Hey,” he greeted a smile spreading across his face. “Shall we?” he asked placing a hand on the small of her back, leading her inside.
Anna looked up at the sound of his voice, and broke into a brighter smile than she’d worn around him in the last week or so. Her heart felt warm at the sight of his smile. She leaned in against him as as as as he turned to lead her into the restaurant. “I hope you haven’t had the movie spoiled for you yet.” She said.
The hostess knew they were coming, and led them to a booth in the back. Anna slid in first and settled down against the cushions. This was one of those homey places where everything was a little worn, but the food was amazing. Anna liked dipping her french fries in her strawberry shake.
“I’ve managed to avoid it,” he replied as as as as he slid into the booth next to her. He hadn’t done much over the break. Kept a lot to himself which wasn’t all that unusual. But now he was out with Anna and that was certainly okay with him. Once again she seemed different. For awhile she had been distant. It didn’t seemed like she cared if they were together or not. He wasn’t sure if that was because of what happened during finals week or what. But now she seemed back to her usual self. Just as warm and caring as she always had been.
“So how has your break been?” he asked now wrapping his arm around her shoulders as as as as he picked up the menu with the other to look over his options.
Anna shrugged her shoulders gently, but then turned to cuddle in against his side. It felt like it’d been forever since they’d been… close. Like this. She savored his body heat, inhaled his musky scent. Her face flushed again, but she didn’t try to hide it.
“I’ve just been reading a lot.” Anna said. “And Caroline and I went out a few times.”
“You mentioned that,” on the network. Advertising that she wanted to go out even more. He wasn’t all that fond of it, but it was her life. She should be going out and having a good time. She was in college after all. He certainly didn’t want to keep her from the full college experience, which yes included parties and dancing.
“What books have you been reading?” that was something he had more in common with her on at least. Rather than partying which was something he hadn’t done since he was in college.
Anna thought about her Network post and her smile faltered just slightly. She wasn’t sure what had come over her in those moments--so many of them--when she didn’t really care what Ezra… well, she always cared, but she didn’t… it was hard to explain. She was back to normal now, though she’d learned a lot from the experience.
“Just catching up on some pop culture stuff. I read The Martian. I’m working on some of the Game of Thrones books, though I usually use those to fall asleep at night.” She couldn’t help but break into a little grin at that. Not exactly high literature, but it was good to make her feel sleepy.
“Not into fantasy politics?” he questioned. Ezra much preferred the classics, but he did read new novels often. Particularly popular ones. If he ever wanted to publish a novel of his own he should know what sold. Although science fiction and fantasy were not his genres. He preferred to write and read about crime.
“I’m glad you made time in that busy reading schedule of yours to come out with me,” he replied smile back on his face. He didn’t bring the dancing back up. Sure he was seeing Anna, but he had no claim on her. She could do as he pleased, with who she pleased. He may not like it, but it wasn’t exactly his place to say anything. They never discussed being exclusive.
“No.” Anna said, grinning sheepishly. “I don’t know. I like things that are a little bit… faster paced than that? It’s so much descriptions of clothes and whatnot… gets kinda boring.” She didn’t mind, though. The show was sexy and gory and Peter Dinklage was fabulous.
“I figured you might be worth a couple of hours,” Anna teased, breaking into a more genuine smile. She lifted her ice water to sip from it. “So now you’re in the spotlight. Make it worth my time.” Another tease. “No pressure.”
“It’s called setting the scene,” he teased. Although it wasn’t exactly his favorite thing to read either.
“And here I thought just spending time with me was good enough,” he teased right back. “Plus you get a free meal, and a movie.”
Anna laughed. “You’re bribing me with free food and a movie, then?” She leaned back against him, tucking her shoulder under his arm. Hey, if he was willing to put up with her playful ridiculousness, she was going to keep dishing it out. “I suppose it’s worth having to hang around a handsome, intelligent, funny man for the evening if it means I get dinner and a movie out of the deal.”
“If that’s what I have to do to pull you away from reading for a night.” Although he had to admit he did love that she enjoyed reading. It was important to share passions or at least enjoy the other persons. While he wasn’t the biggest art fan out there he could certainly appreciate a good piece of artwork as well. The fact that he grew up around a lot of it helped as well.
“Wait. Is another guy showing up?” he teased right back at her. “I was under the impression you’d be spending the evening with me.”
“You know, next time I could just bring a book with me.” Anna grinned. “We could have a cuddle-and-read date! Take-out Chinese, warm blankets, a good book or two, cuddled up on the sofa…” It actually sounded like the best date ever.
“Oh, didn’t I tell you that my boyfriend George is coming to pick me up? He’ll be around, you can’t miss him. He’s the one with the biceps.” Anna lifted her own arm and flexed, playfully. It was, of course, not true. At all. There was no George. In Anna’s eyes, there was only Ezra.
That actually sounded like the perfect date to him as well. Suggestions like this were the reason he liked her. “I think I can make that happen,” he replied with a smile.
“I always lose out to the guys with the biceps,” he teased right back. “Should I just give George the movie tickets then?”
“Probably.” Anna sat up a little when the food arrived. “Actually, just leave them with me. George gets really jealous. You’ll have to sneak out the back.” She grinned as she lifted her fork to start in on her meal. “Sooooooo.” She said, chewing. It was good food. “Is it nerdy of me to be totally into Star Wars?”
