Audrey had finally cleaned up all the boxes, ribbons and papers from Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and finished tidying up the kitchen after so much baking, cooking, and amazing food. The fridge was practically overflowing with leftovers. It was going to be a good week through to New Years.
She dressed Ben in his new, little snow suit, and then pulled on some warm things herself.
“You ready?” Audrey called out to Merlin. They’d talked about going out in the snow to play today. Beautiful day for it, too.
Merlin had felt truly blessed this Christmas, with Ben, Audrey and their friends around. It had been a lovely time especially with the added snow, which really made it feel Christmassy.
“Ready” he called back emerging from the bedroom in a jumper and pulling his thick winter coat on. It reminded him of home all the winter stuff, so far he’d made use of his wooly jumpers each year he’d been here. Thank goodness the OC was reliably weird.
“Ready Benny boy?” he said to his son who flailed his arms excitedly as Merlin pressed a kiss to his cheek - one of the only accessible parts of him.
Celebrating Ben’s first birthday and Christmas at the same time was a pretty big deal. Ben didn’t get the whole thing, but he was only one. That was okay. Pretty soon he’d be all about Christmas and presents and the like. For now, though, Audrey was enjoying a fairly low key (for her!) Christmas.
She joined Merlin in the hall and leaned in to steal a quick kiss, then grinned at Merlin’s kiss to Ben’s cheek. The boy was pretty well covered. He’d be warm enough. “Ready.” Audrey said.
Together they moved out into the yard. There was a tiny, gentle snow falling, which made everything more whimsical. Audrey waved her wand and lights turned on all around the house and yard. Even in the daytime they were pretty.
The first couple of Christmases and Birthdays were more about the parents than the children or so Merlin had read and he thought he kind of understood it. It was exciting to be celebrating with his family and while he’d been more hesitant than Audrey to begin with he was very much warming to the idea of expanding their family.
Once outside it wasn’t as bitterly cold as Merlin had expected even with the snow falling, “Looking good” he commented when Audrey lit up the house, “I’m pretty proud of us you know” he said leaning in to steal another kiss from her.
So far things with Ben had been wonderful. Maybe he wasn’t going to have weird Dream powers like Audrey and Merlin had. Audrey wasn’t sure if that made her happy or not, but it was what it was. She couldn’t change it even if she wanted to.
“Mmm.” Audrey returned his kiss, even though Ben was struggling in her arms. He wanted to be let down so he could run around in the snow and play. Amazing how his walking/running skills were growing exponentially every day. With a little laugh, Audrey pulled back so she could let the boy down, then turned to her husband and wrapped her arms around him properly. “I’m proud of us, too.” She said, then leaned in for another kiss.
It was definitely going to be interesting to see if he did develop any powers, Merlin was kind of hoping he would but maybe a little later on when they could teach him to control them a little easier.
Glancing at Ben to make sure he wasn’t going to run off somewhere he took Audrey in his arms and kissed her soundly. It was definitely days like this that made him feel blessed.
The backyard was pretty well baby proofed. Audrey and Merlin could have a good, solid make-out session for a moment or two before they had to worry about the baby. It always ended too quickly, and Audrey nuzzled her nose against his for a moment, wanting to stay close. “We’ll have to continue this later.”
She reluctantly pulled away from him and turned to the baby. Ben was bending down and digging his gloved fingers into the snow. Audrey hunkered down, too, and put her hand next to his. “It’s cold, Benny. Cold snow.”
“We definitely will” Merlin agreed nuzzling back before hunkering down with Ben too, “Very cold Benny boy” he said making the little boy giggle before he put his hands on each of his parents and pushed their hands into the snow, “Yep very cold” Merlin grinned at Audrey.
Audrey laughed. “Snow’s cold!” She took a handful of the stuff, packed it into a ball, and tossed it in Merlin’s direction, playfully. “We should make a snowman. What do you think, Benny? Do you wanna build a snowman?”
“I prefer snowman to pelting daddy with snowballs” Merlin said, beginning to hum as they packed snow for Ben to make a snowman, sometimes those annoying tunes just wouldn’t leave your head.
Audrey laughed softly, then stood up straight again. She lifted her son back up to his feet, and instructed him to follow Daddy before she started to gather up some snow. Thankfully for Merlin, Ben wasn’t all that fond of Frozen. But Big Hero Six made him ridiculously happy.
“I prefer snowmen to making snow angels. It’s freaking cold out here,” Audrey said, grinning.
“It really is” Merlin agreed as he helped Ben pat down the snow, thankful for their warm gloves. Even though their son wasn’t a Frozen fan the songs still played enough everywhere for them to stick in Merlin’s head though he did like Big Hero Six more too.
Audrey wasn’t going to burst into song. She didn’t have the best singing voice, in her humble opinion, but she also didn’t want to get those songs stuck in her head. They’d be there all day. Christmas music was a maybe, since Christmas went on for Audrey until January sixth.
“Maybe after this,” Audrey said, puffing a little from exertion (rolling snow to make a snowman was hard work, dude), “we can go inside and watch a movie with some hot chocolate?”
“That is the perfect idea, what do you think buddy?” he asked Ben who gave him a toothy grin and nodded. “I think that’s a hit, now let’s get this done before we freeze our fingers off”
