Stefan was sitting on the porch, frowning out at the lawn. There was still snow everywhere, which was a good thing. It made the little, green goblins all the more visible as they came out from behind cars and between houses all up and down the block. These things didn’t look like they’d be good to eat, which was a shame. He was getting kind of hungry.
The front door opened behind him, and he turned to glance over his shoulder. “Go back inside, Anna--oh. Care. You want to help me get rid of some of these beasts?”
Stefan had been outside for awhile. Caroline was beginning to think he had taken off only she could still hear him out there. It wasn’t that she was worried about him, she was more just curious about what the hell he was up to. So of course she had to go check it out.
Ah, the gremlins. Those little fuckers were like multiplying or something. “Sure. Why not?” she had some time to kill and hunting down Orange County’s newest nuisance seemed like as good idea as any. “How many have you killed so far?”
They were pretty horrible, those long armed, reptilian beasts. With huge, wide mouths and sharp teeth, claws that looked capable of some pretty terrible destruction… Stefan wasn’t a fan. “Just a couple. Don’t try to eat them.” He frowned. That was a horrible mistake. “They’re not very fast, but their claws are sharp. Don’t let them get the better of you. And don’t get them wet.”
“I know you taught me to eat bunnies in the dreams. But I stick to human blood here.” Animal blood just didn’t do it for her. She had no idea how Stefan managed. But hey as long as he wasn’t going Ripper she wasn’t going to say anything. “Why? What happens if you get them wet?” And how what happened if snow got them?
“They… multiply.” Stefan said, frowning. “They’re Gremlins. You know… Gremlins? We watched it overseas every Christmas. It’s a Christmas movie.” There was a sinking feeling in his gut about the whole thing. “Don’t feed them after midnight? Sunlight should kill them, though I have a feeling this is Orange County fuckery at its finest.”
Ah right. It had been forever since Caroline had seen that movie. “Well what are we waiting for? Let’s start killing them.” And with that Caroline took off at vamp speed. She snatched up one of the creatures and snapped it’s neck. Well that was simple enough. But then another one jumped out at her latching on to her face.
And Stefan was there, wrenching the creature off of Caroline’s face. Red veins across his face, darkness in his eyes, and a hunger on his lips. He ripped the creature’s arm off, then tossed it aside. Using super-human speed, he turned his attention onto the next Gremlin, zooming across the yard to tackle the thing, careful not to bite.
Another one jumped on his back, claws out.
“Thanks,” Caroline muttered but Stefan had already taken off, though he had probably still heard it. She was about to take off after another one when she saw the one on his back. Rushing to her friend she yanked the creature off of him. Holding it by it’s back with one hand she used the other to snap it’s neck. “I really don’t like these things.”
“Me, neither.” Of course, now Stefan’s shirt was all torn and bloody, but he was used to that from his Dreams. He stood up straight and his spine cracked once. Interesting. “Let’s just make sure none of them get any closer to the house. I doubt they’d do much damage to us or the building, but I’d hate to see what one of these fuckers could do to Anna.”
Since his attack on the redhead, Stefan had developed a sort of older-brother protectiveness over her. He felt like he needed to make amends for hurting her, and wanted to ensure that no more harm would come to her. He also liked to sneak her Red Bull when Caroline wasn’t looking. Though, he knew Caroline was well aware of what he was doing.
Anna was definitely their most fragile roommate. Caroline never had to worry about any of her vampire friends, she knew they could all protect themselves. “We’ll make sure we don’t have to find out.” Stefan and Caroline the protectors from Gremlins. Hey, whatever worked.
