Elphaba was nervous. Not only was she hosting Christmas dinner, she also had some rather huge news to announce to their best friends Elsa and Kate. Having already told Lúthien that morning, she couldn’t wait to tell their friends their news. Of course, she knew there would be questions, but she could only hope they would understand.
The dinner had been pretty good, even if she said so herself and now, while they were waiting for tea and coffee to brew and with dessert on the table, she looked over at Lúthien nervously, seeing whether she thought now was a good time to tell them.
Dinner had been absolutely lovely and Elsa had been so thankful that their friends had invited them over, it had been very nice to celebrate the day together. Sitting around the table now she could see there was something Elphie and Luthien had on their minds, “Is everything okay?” she asked.
Luthien was still reeling from the news that morning. Christmas miracle or dream miracle or related to her elvish soul, it didn't matter. It was happening. She'd been delighted, of course, picking Elphaba up and spinning her around. Family was, perhaps, Luthien's greatest wish.
She smiled at her wife, and nodded her head slowly. She'd support Elphaba and honestly it should be Elphie's words, not hers, right now.
There was definitely something up, Kate decided. She nursed her drink, observing their friends with a smile fixed into place. Elphaba seemed nervous and Luthien looked entirely too smug. But dinner had gone well. It was a weird little extended family she was gaining, but she liked it.
Elphaba swallowed, her mouth suddenly dry now that she was going to tell them. She reached across the corner of the table and took Lúthien’s hand in hers and squeezed her fingers. Turning to look back at Elsa and Kate, she smiled brightly. “So um, Lúthien and I have some news,” she cleared her throat, rubbing her thumb back and forth across Lúthien’s skin as she paused. “Now, I know that this is a bit of a shock and a bit of a surprise, to everyone, believe me, but...I’m pregnant,” she beamed at them, holding tightly to her wife’s hand as she did.
To say it was a surprise was a little understating it but Elsa could see the happiness rolling off them both and that was the most important thing so she smiled brightly and moved to hug them both. “That is absolutely wonderful news” she said, asking the how could be done later, congratulations needed to be given first.
Okay, but Kate hadn't expected that. Not even a little bit. She inhaled her tea and sputtered, coughing to clear her throat. "How? I mean, it's wonderful, but how?"
Luthien laughed, Kate's reaction amusing to her. "Honestly? I'm not positive. We've been discussing it, but we hadn't even looked for donors yet. But it is the time of year for wishes to come true."
Kate nodded, and the fact she could take that at face value was a good clue as to the state of the area they lived in. "Wow. So congratulations."
"Thank you," Luthien replied. She stifled another laugh.
Elphaba just grinned in return, ducking her chin at their questions and congratulations. “Thanks, we uh...we’re not sure how it happened, but we’re not questioning it,” she looked at Lúthien, love in her eyes. “I may have...wished for us to have some luck in this area, but I never thought…” she trailed off with a little laugh.
“Your very own Christmas miracle” Elsa said with a bright smile, “How wonderful. I’m so glad your wish was fulfilled, how exciting for you both” It should be worrying how easily she accepted the strange things that happened here but it was far easier to do that than question everything.
“Making a wish in this county is like rolling the dice.” Kate grinned at them both. “Guess you rolled a seven.” She’d seen stranger, even in her own dreams. “Do you think you’re both genetically related to it?”
“It’s possible. That would be the ideal,” Luthien replied. She got a sappy smile on her face. “But I would love it all the same.”
“Who knows,” Elphaba shook her head in bewilderment. “God knows what the doctors are going to say when we have our first check-up. I wonder if it’s ever happened before, I mean this is basically ground zero for all the weird happenings in the world,” she joked, standing up to pour the tea for everyone.
“I’m sure if you speak to the right doctors they’ll understand” Elsa said, “After all as you say different things occur here a lot so I am sure someone will be able to handle it without freaking out” she smiled, and if they didn’t well the parentage never needed to come up really. There were ways around it. “Have you told Dior yet?” she asked smiling her thanks for the tea.
“Someone who’s dreamed would probably understand better than someone who hasn’t.” Dreamers tended to understand the crazy better than non-dreamers at anyrate, even if the pregnancy hadn’t come from dreams.
“Not yet. I haven’t figured out yet how to approach him. I hope he’ll be happy about the idea, but there’s no way of telling. I was an only child too, and I can see some potential jealousy.”
“Well hopefully we can explain to him that this is his baby too and he can help take care of it just as well,” Elphaba smiled at Luthien, confident they could help Dior work through it all.
