Sharon pulled the dress up and over her head with a grunt, then tossed it aside onto the rocking chair in her bedroom. It was frustrating trying to find something to wear post baby. Her maternity clothes were matronly and baggy, her nursing gear was made for comfort, not sexiness. And Sharon wanted to be sexy tonight. It was important. She really wanted this date to go well. Because maybe the kiss was a fluke? Some Orange County madness, and he was going to flee as soon as he had the chance?
Sharon turned to dig through her closet again, finding a skirt she hadn’t tried on yet. She pulled the thing on and dug around for a sweater. Surely she could find one of those. Her room was a mess--there were clothes everywhere. Sharon could pick them all up later. She didn’t have that much time left before Bucky was supposed to pick her up. Her hair and make-up were finished, her purse was packed, the ornament she’d purchased for him sitting on her dresser. All she had to do was figure out what to wear.
Veronica had just returned from coffee with Svetlana. She was on her way to her room when she passed by Sharon’s and saw what a mess it was. Or at least that’s how it seemed from the partially opened door. She knocked on it before entering, because really they were so past boundaries at this point. The fact that she knocked was probably more of a courtesy than Sharon was used to.
She stood in the doorway for a moment looking over the clothes thrown all over Sharon’s room. What the hell? “What happened here?” Veronica asked raising a brow. “Did your closest throw up?”
Sharon didn’t bother to emerge from her closet when Veronica knocked and came in. She thought it was her mom at first, because since when did Veronica knock? But the voice tipped her off.
“No,” she said, her voice muffled by some shirts she was digging through, “I’m going on a date. I need something that’s not frumpy-mom or covered in spit-up stains.”
“Going out with Killian again?” Veronica asked since she heard all about Sharon’s encounters with him. “How many dates does that make now?” she walked further into the room picking a skirt up off the floor. “What’s wrong with this?” there were no spit up stains on it that Veronica noticed.
“What?” Sharon finally withdrew her head from the closet and frowned. “That one makes me look fat.” She kicked off her shoes and slipped into another pair. “Killian? No.” She actually hadn’t thought about Killian in a couple of days. She should have been more in touch with him, but Christmas had her distracted. Along with other things. “...someone else. Someone who kissed me under the mistletoe.” She broke into a playful grin, then pulled a sweater from the closet.
“You’re not fat,” Veronica replied rolling her eyes. It wasn’t so much an annoyed eyeroll as an ‘I can’t believe I’m having this conversation’ eyeroll. And then she heard more of Sharon’s story and saw that smile on her face. “Oh?” now she was curious. “And does this mistletoe kisser have a name?”
“I still have a bit of baby weight to lose,” Sharon countered. And it was true--her pre-baby clothes didn’t fit the same way they’d fit before she’d had Viv. Some of it was nice (holy cow her breasts were huge!) but some of it wasn’t (some of her shoes just plain didn’t fit her feet anymore).
“His name is James Buchanan Barnes.” Sharon explained. “We got caught under some mistletoe… and kissing him made my toes curl.” She went a little pink but smiled stupidly at the memory. Then she tugged the sweater up and over her head. “How’s this?”
“You look fine,” you could barely see the baby weight anymore. Unless you were looking at Sharon’s boobs which was probably a plus anyway. Veronica wasn’t exactly good at these good girl talk picking out clothes conversations.
“Full name. Wow. I only got a first name for Killian,” Veronica quipped. “He must be special,” she added as as as as Sharon put on the sweater. “You look great,” Veronica assured her. “I’m sure you’ll have another toe curling kiss. No mistletoe needed.”
“Thanks.” Sharon said, smoothing her hands over her sweater, her skirt. The shoes didn’t really go, but she was running low on time now. Too many outfit changes in too little time. She sighed and moved to the mirror to make sure she hadn’t done a disaster with her hair or make-up.
“...well, Killian is the Captain.” Sharon said, smirking softly. “But Bucky--that’s his nickname--he’s… he’s in my Dreams.” She paused, and turned around to face Veronica. “I haven’t told him about the Dreams.” She hadn’t told him anything yet.
“Ah. Dream guy. I know how that goes.” Obviously considering Veronica’s real life boyfriend happened to be her on again off again dream boyfriend. “Yeah the Captain doesn’t stand a chance,” she replied with a smirk that matched Sharon’s.
“Are you going to tell him about the dreams?” that was always a touchy subject. Veronica had finished dreaming and Logan was still back in high school. She was never sure how much she should share with him when it came to that, but at least he found out about his dad on his own.
“He’s not… I’ve never met him in my Dreams,” Sharon explained. She had to switch shoes again. Then she had to decide which little clutch purse went with the outfit she’d chosen. “He died in 1945. He was best friends with Steve Rogers, who I was assigned to protect.” Wow, her Dreams must have sounded bizarre to someone who didn’t know. “And in this world? He must be best friends with Steve, he mentioned him, and now Peggy’s been going out with Steve. I really don’t want to mess this up and make things awkward.”
Her dreams did sound a little crazy but it wasn’t like this was the first time Veronica was hearing about them. It was just hard to keep all the people straight. As she was sure it was for Sharon with her dreams. “I don’t think you will. Just calm down and be yourself. If he doesn’t see how great you are his problem.”
Sharon smirked softly, zipping up her boots. “You’re my best friend. I think you’re contractually obligated to say things like that.” She stood up straight again, dusted off her skirt, and held her arms out in a “well?” gesture.
“It was written in the fine print,” she quipped. “You look great,” Veronica assured her friend again. “Have fun tonight. I’m off to Logan’s.” She hadn’t been home too long but she had said she had told him she’d be there that night.
Sharon snirked. It was a cross between a snort and a smirk, and it suited her well. “Thanks. And all right. I’ll see you tomorrow at work.” Random day for a date, right? Monday the 28th? But it worked out for Sharon’s schedule, and Bucky’s too. So she was off. Nervous still, but feeling a little better, she followed Veronica out.
