Haymitch had everything planned out, he had ordered a good Christmas dinner with ham, vegetables, potatoes and all the trimmings to be delivered and ready to eat that afternoon after Katniss’ mother and sister arrived. He hadn’t told the young woman, wanting to surprise her. He’d also placed some presents for them all underneath the tree.
Currently he had just finished cleaning the living room and was moving onto the dining room so that they could eat in there. Something he and Katniss never bothered with normally but this was a special occasion.
Katniss ran her hand through her hair as she left her room and headed down for tea. Things had been pretty good lately, aside from the occasional bad Dream still, but with everyone back where they were supposed to be, she felt much more secure on waking. Walking out into the living room, she noticed that everything had been tidied away and put into piles. Highly unusual.
Hearing a noise in the adjoining room, she frowned and made her way to the doorway where she watched Haymitch bustling around and tidying. Folding her arms and leaning against the doorway, she smiled, amused. “We're not expecting royalty are we?” she joked.
Haymitch looked over at Katniss as she spoke, “Just making things look a bit nicer” he told her, as he moved to put the trash he’d collected into the trash can he reached out to ruffle her hair, “Merry Christmas” he grumbled sounding less than cheerful about it. But the house was decorated, he’d done that much for Katniss.
“Merry Christmas,” she murmured in reply, still confused. Watching him as he moved, Katniss frowned again. “Seriously, what’s going on?” she asked, still finding herself rather amused by watching him.
“We have visitors coming for Christmas dinner and don’t worry I’m not cooking” he added before she had a chance to comment, “I’ve ordered the whole spread, it should be here in an hour or so”
“Visitors? What, like Gale and Johanna visitors or people I don’t know visitors?” Katniss asked suspiciously. She’d have to get showered obviously, but she wanted to know how much she’d have to dress up for the visitors. Whoever he’d invited, he’d been very quiet about it, she’d not heard a peep out of him about any plans for Christmas in the weeks preceding today. Very surprising when living with someone.
“You know them. I’ve invited your mother and Prim for Christmas dinner - in fact the car I sent for them should be picking them up now” he revealed, continuing about the cleaning and trying to make it less of a big deal. He’d just wanted to do something nice for her since the dreams were always fairly mean when it came to Katniss.
“I...what?” Katniss gaped at him as she stood upright from leaning on the door post. “My mom and Prim?” she smiled hopefully, incredibly touched by his thoughtfulness.
“Yeah” Haymitch said, scratching the back of his neck in a little display of awkwardness, “That okay?”
There weren’t many times when Katniss was inclined to hugging Haymitch for things he did, but this was one of them and she didn’t stop herself either. Wrapping her arms around his shoulders, she hugged him tight. “Thank you Haymitch,” she told him, feeling happiness welling up inside her. How could she repay him?
He took it as being okay and brought his arms up to hug her back, “You’re welcome sweetheart, let’s have a good Christmas all together” he said quietly, they both deserved some peace for once. He figured they could have the day at least.
“I don’t know how to thank you,” Katniss told him honestly as she stepped back from the hug. “Nothing seems adequate,” she smiled up at him.
He looked down at her and tapped her on the chin, “That smile will do. Now come on help me finish this tidying” he said ruffling her hair before he released her.
