What: Career talk
Where: Alucard’s place
When: Early December
Rating/Warnings: Low
Status: Complete
Alucard and Irisa had been training in the gym of Alucard’s home and for once he’d not used his abilities to give her a chance and she’d actually landed a couple of hits which had put him in a rather good mood.
“So” he said as they sat on the floor for a break and a drink, “any more thoughts on your future career?” having promised they would discuss her options.
Irisa shrugged as she put the cap on her water, resting her elbows on her knees as she leant forward. “Not a clue,” she sighed. “I've never really thought about it until now, but I can't rely on Nolan’s money all the time. I always assumed I'd just be Nolan’s partner and we carry on chasing down wanted bad guys but I suppose the question is:do I want to?”
“Well there are a number of different jobs you could do with your skills and just a little training. I still have contacts in special ops, you could be a somewhat legal assassin” he suggested, with fondness he’d enjoyed his job for the most part. Until the later years anyway.
“You mean like James Bond?” Irisa joked dryly. “I don’t have to wear a suit and be charming, do I?” she grinned cheekily at her master.
“A little more lethal than that but you’re right the charming part might get in the way so let’s move on” he told her with a smirk, waiting for some kind of retaliation for the insult.
Irisa threw him a mock-annoyed look and moved sideways to bump his shoulder with hers. She didn’t take it particularly as an insult, after all, she knew she wasn’t great with people. “What else ya got?” she asked, taking another drink from her bottle.
Alucard chuckled, he knew she wouldn’t take it to heart which was why he teased her. Both Integra and Irisa should know how much he really cared by his mockery level. “Bodyguard” he suggested, “You get a snazzy wardrobe with that one too”
Irisa turned unimpressed eyes at her tutor. “Really? How long have you known me and you think the promise of a snazzy wardrobe is going to sway me to a particular career?” she pointed out, a little disbelievingly. “Besides, I’m tiny, I look awesome in practically anything,” she reasoned with a shrug, turning back to face the front.
“Well women are strange, who knows what you may decide you like. One day you’ll turn up in a dress and give me a heart attack” he told her with a smirk. “Fine. Well there’s always Integra’s old career path, MMA” he shrugged.
Irisa chuckled at that, it would be a big deal if she ever did turn up in a dress. Alucard might actually die laughing, she thought to herself. She sighed and shook her head in response, looking down from his gaze. “I...I don't think I want to do anything like that. I don't...I don't think I want to fight anymore,” she admitted quietly, playing with the label on her bottle.
He actually wouldn’t put it past himself to actually kill himself laughing if she did walk in wearing a dress. Or her to do it purposefully to make him do that. Her next words kind of floored him, “Oh” he said, “You aren’t enjoying it?” he asked her because she always seemed to.
“No, I…” Irisa replied quickly, then sighed as she tried to convey how she felt in a way he might understand. “I’ve been fighting all my life. When Nolan adopted me one of the first things he taught me was how to shoot a gun. I was 6,” she looked up at him. “Nolan said it was the way it had to be because that was the life we led,” she shrugged at Alucard as she tried to explain. “Violence has a place, I get that, but I don’t think I want to hurt anyone anymore,” she admitted. “My Dreams haven’t been helping lately either,” she told him.
Alucard didn’t often show obvious affection but he seemed to soften a little as she spoke and he placed a hand on her head letting it stroke her hair as he released her, “Then we will find something else for you” he told her, “Tell me about your dreams little one, you haven’t mentioned them much”
“They…” Irisa took a deep breath and sighed as she tried to formulate the words. “They call me the Devouring Mother,” she told him quietly. “I umm...I did something to save Nolan and it changed me. Made me hurt the people I cared about,” she bit her lip, eyes set on the bottle in her hands.
“The Devouring Mother” he repeated, that sounded rather appealing though he was not so thoughtless as to say so. “That is not the end of your story I think, you are not a monster, you are a sweet thoughtful girl who simply suffered the consequences of a choice she made”
“Yeah, and killed thousands of people because of that choice,” Irisa shook her head. “I know we’re not those people but I can’t help but think about the similarities between my life here and the Dreams. I’m scared I’ll turn into this...thing that destroys everything which I have no power over,” she told him honestly. She and Alucard had got to a point where honesty was expected. As part of her training she had to learn to acknowledge how she was feeling so she could channel it.
“Those kinds of decisions are made everyday little one” Alucard told her, and luckily this had only been a decision Irisa made in her dream. “That will not happen. You are not a monster” he repeated, “You will not turn into the Devouring Mother. And I am here to continue reminding you of that”
Irisa quirked a smile up at him for that. She knew he meant it, that he’d do his very best to stop her, but at the end of the day the Kaziri had been powerful and incredibly good at self-preservation. She only hoped that, if the worst came to the worst, Alucard would put her down before she could do any real harm to anyone. “So what should I do with myself?” she asked, shrugging and palms up. “If I don’t want to fight, what can I do? I don’t want to disappoint you or Integra,” she told him honestly, worried that she would think she was turning her back on all their training and hard work with her.
“My dear girl I highly doubt you could ever disappoint Integra, she has a ridiculous soft spot for you. I honestly don’t quite know what to make of it sometimes” Which of course was really how Alucard felt, he felt almost fatherly though he would vehemently deny all idea of that. “We will both be proud and happy as long as you are, in whatever you do. Perhaps something which helps people will go some way to alleviate your fears of hurting them”
Irisa smiled up at him, deeply appreciative of what the two of them had done for her over the past few months. “I’m really not much of a people person...do you think I could?” she asked dubiously.
“I think you should try. You will never know for certain until you do and life is too fragile to fill it with regrets” he said, “I have a friend, she’s a nurse perhaps she could help. She could at least talk to you maybe?”
Irisa nodded, never one to back down from a challenge. “Thanks, I’d like that,” she told him. “It would at least give me an idea if it could be possible.”
“Then I will speak to her” Alucard said, “Don’t be surprised if she gets in touch with you soon”
