Vanessa had just given another guest lecture and since she had time to spare had been offered a tour of the art department which she had eagerly taken up. Currently she was taking her time walking around the room and looking at everything on display by the students.

She was impressed with the array of talent, a certain group of paintings and drawings drew her attention and she moved to focus on those.

Clary had been in the lecture and listened about the art world from someone who really lived and breathed it. That kind of experience and advice was invaluable and Clary had avidly listened. Now the guest lecturer was looking around the students collection of work, some of which contained her own pieces and Clary desperately hoped the other woman would like her work.

When the woman stopped by her pieces, Clary approached and tried to be helpful. ”Hi, um, can I help?” and Clary had avidly taken on board everything she had said. Spotting Vanessa stopping by some some of her work, Clary stepped up to her.

Vanessa turned and smiled, “Hello” she responded, “Is this your work?” she asked, she was struck by the composition of the pieces and the talent they showed. Each was unique and seemed to show differing skills which was no doubt the point but didn’t seem forced.

“Yeah, it is,” Clary replied happily. “Do you like it?” she asked nervously. She wasn't one who would normally show how nervous she was, but for now, she was wringing her hands. If an art critic liked her work then maybe she could be on the way to a full on professional exhibition.

“Very much” Vanessa said, “You have a very unique style, I love the color use here” she pointed it out, “And then the line work on this piece is practically immaculate” Vanessa had seen a lot of good and bad work over the years and she knew with a little further instruction and development this girl could be very very good.

Clary grinned proudly, humbly pleased with her work and the reception it had garnered. She forced herself to stop wringing her hands and made herself stand confidently in front of her work. “Thank you very much, it means a great deal to get that kind of feedback from someone who’s not either my family or my tutor,” she joked.

“Well I think you’d get a lot of good feedback it you displayed somewhere more public” Vanessa told her, “I’ll be honest I’m guest lecturing at a number of colleges and universities around the county and I’m liking the idea of putting together a show for those I think have the promise to go far. Would that be of interest to you?”

“Are you kidding? Of course it would!” Clary grinned, shocked by Vanessa’s proposition. Checking herself, she tried to calm down and be a little more mature about her response. “Sorry, um, I’m Clary Fray by the way,” she reached out a hand in greeting.

Vanessa couldn’t stop a little laugh escaping at the girls reaction, “Please don’t apologise I appreciate such enthusiasm” she told her with a smile as she shook her hand, “Vanessa Marianna, director of Garden Grove Art Gallery”

“I know, I was uh...in your lecture,” Clary told her, still smiling brightly as they let go of each other’s hands. “Thank you so much for coming. Hearing a professional talking about the industry is invaluable. So were you thinking of a theme for a your show? There might be a particular couple of pieces I could offer up,” she suggested, gesturing to a few of her nearby paintings.

“Ah I wasn’t sure” Vanessa smiled, she knew it wasn’t mandatory for the students as she was only a guest lecturer but she was pleased Clary had found what she said to be of use. “Well I think it will be probably late January so it’s not set in stone yet but I was considering, new life, new beginnings, hope” she gestured with her hand, “Something along those lines”

“Well I’ve got a couple of pieces which would fit that sort of theme, would you like me to show you them?” Clary asked, gesturing to around the boards where more of her art was hung.

“I would love to see them, thank you” Vanessa said nodding at Clary to lead the way excitement thrumming through her at the ideas flooding her mind.

“Great, follow me,” Clary grinned, leading the way around the boards with their artwork hung on them. This could mean great things for her future! She couldn’t wait to tell Izzy and Jace!
