Caroline was getting used to the whole relationship thing. Peeta was occupying a lot of her time and Caroline being the social girl that she was, was starting to really miss her friends. She was slowly starting to introduce Peeta to them. A double date with Hanna and Caleb seemed like the perfect idea. The blonde had honestly never been on one before and she had to admit she was excited. Plus she really liked Hanna's boyfriend he seemed to really care about her friend and hopefully a night out would distract the two of them from the whole 'I love you' issue. Yes Caroline knew about that.
Peeta had taken her ice skating once already and of course she had bragged about it to Hanna. She totally wouldn't mind going again for their double date though, it seemed like a good activity for a group outing. Especially with all the snow Orange County was getting lately. So weird how that seemed to happen every year. Dressed in jeans, a sweater, jacket and a scarf Caroline arrived at the rink with Peeta. She didn’t see Hanna or Caleb yet so she went with Peeta to go rent some skates and put them on.
Caleb wasn’t sure how Hanna had convinced him to go ice skating. That girl could get him to do a lot of things he wouldn’t normally do. But now that her cast was off he supposed he would let her do all the activities she wanted. She had been cooped up for so long it was only fair really. He had met her friend Caroline a few times when picking Hanna up from classes and she was nice enough and always seemed to be in a good mood so he couldn’t really object to going out on with them anyway.
Arriving at the rink he had his arm around his girlfriend and spotted the other blonde in line to rent skates with some guy he assumed was her boyfriend. He nodded at them to Hanna and the couple made their way over. “Hey,” he said as they approached, mostly to Caroline but he did extend his hand to shake the other guys. “Caleb,” he added to introduce himself to the one person he did not know.
Hanna was excited. Not only was she meeting the sex friend turned boyfriend, there was ice skating involved. Something that was desperately needed following being in a cast for so long. No thank you, when there was an option for a double date and it was something that involved activity? She was all over that. Besides, it would be good for Caleb! Or something like that.
Dressed warmly in her own sweater, jeans, scarf and jacket (well, there were sort of requirements in the cold, okay?), Hanna was good with the walking arrangement. But once they met up with Caroline and Peeta in line, she broke away to hug her friend in greeting before turning to Peeta, “Hi! I’m Hanna.”
Tonight was another date night with Caroline friends and he knew that in the back of his mind that he should really get around to introducing her to his friends, but he wasn’t quite sure how to go about it since only one of his friends was seriously dating someone. Maybe a dinner party or something. At least for now he had ice skating to take his mind off that and he wasn’t even mad they were at the rink again. He had a lot of fun on their first ice skating rink and he knew this was a good way to have a double date with something to keep everyone happily occupied.
He heard a voice behind him and then suddenly a blonde head appeared and went in for a hug. Peeta couldn’t help but chuckle and then regarded the brunette man that appeared. He took the hand with a smile, “Hello, Caleb and hello, Hanna. I’m Peeta. It’s nice to meet both of you. I hope you’re both up for a cold night out on the rink.”
Caroline returned Hanna’s hug with a large smile on her face. But then it was rare that Caroline wasn’t smiling anyway. She was pleased that Hanna, Caleb and Peeta had all introduced themselves. No need for the whole sex friend turned boyfriend introduction. Though she didn’t know Caleb all that well so she probably wouldn’t have put it like that for him. “Peeta! Don’t scare them,” she teased. “It’s so much fun. You don’t even notice the cold, promise.”
Caleb wasn’t as inclined to believe it was as fun as Caroline said it was but he wasn’t about to bring the mood down either. “Nice to meet you too,” he replied to Peeta before wrapping his arm back around Hanna now that she was done hugging Caroline. He had to admit it was nice to be out with another couple. He had only met a few of Hanna’s friends. Well two. And the majority of her family, but it was nice having another guy around. “So Caroline made us tell her how we met. How’d you two meet?” He asked as the line moved forward.
Definitely an awkward way to do introductions, so the way it was working out seemed to be just fine. Nor was she too worried about the cold of ice skating. It came with the territory. Plus, she was tough to scare with things like that.
Hug returned, Hanna returned to Caleb’s side and smiled at Peeta. “Likewise!” And then Caleb was asking how the two had met and all she could do was quirk a brow in amusement. Mostly because she knew the original intent of the relationship, which wasn’t for a relationship. But hey, she was interested to see how Peeta answered.
“We met at a bar actually. I picked her up with the promise of a free drink and dancing. Worked like a charm,” Peeta glanced over at Caroline and gave her a wink before turning back to Caleb and Hanna with a smile. It was the simple way of explaining how they met and didn’t need to go into how it just turned into quite a long span of hooking up and then eventually owning up to feelings. But he had the suspicion that she had told all of her friends that they were ‘sex friends’, so he didn’t feel the need to elaborate on that, “How did you two meet then?”
Caroline had not told all her friends about the whole sex friends thing. It was mostly just her roommates because they noticed she had been missing lately, and Hanna. But whatever. It was a very accurate description of what Peeta had been prior to a few weeks ago anyway. She looked at him with a smile still on her face. “You left out the part where you almost spilled a drink on me,” she teased nudging him with her shoulder before turning her attention back to Hanna and Caleb. She already heard the story but she didn’t mind hearing it again, it was cute after all.
“Smooth,” Caleb commented with a smirk, more so about the almost spilling a drink on Caroline part. Because the buying her a drink and dancing with her was actually a good move. And obviously it had worked. “Hanna did spill a drink on me. Coffee. Ruined my shirt too,” even with her stain removal tips. Maybe he hadn’t applied them right. Oh well. It was worth it. “But that’s not how we met.” He would leave the rest for Hanna to tell. Let her say whatever she felt comfortable with saying considering she hadn’t told Caroline the full story the first time around he had a feeling she wouldn’t tell the full story this time either and that was perfectly fine with him. He liked being the only one that knew her little secret.
“I offered to buy you a new one and you only took coffee, so I don’t know what you’re complaining about.” She of course knew it was teasing but there were facts there, okay? Like how she had totally been willing to buy him a new shirt but he had turned down that idea. But right. How they met.
“Basically we ran into one another and he complimented my sunglasses.” It was so simple. You know, beyond the fact he’d caught her shoplifting them and there had been banter. Lots of banter. “Then we got lunch because why not, right?” Whatever, it worked out and here they were.
“Let’s not discuss the drink because that was not my finest moment. I may have already been a bit tipsy at that point, but at least we have a happy story. I mean, these two had a coffee spilling moment and it doesn’t seem as much fun to to tell,” Peeta teased as he smiled over at Caroline. He couldn’t help but laugh at Caleb and Hanna’s story about spilling the coffee and ruining his shirt because at least they would always be able to remember that moment.
But the true story about the sunglasses made him smirk, “Ah, you must be very fashion conscious if all it takes to get a date is complimenting your sunglasses. Quite impressive, Caleb. I’m pretty sure I would never be able to manage a smooth compliment about sunglasses, but I could potentially wax poetic about the color of Caroline’s hair if I wanted to.”
“Well at least you didn’t actually spill one on me,” she replied teasing her friend a little bit for spilling coffee on Caleb. And Peeta had the whole tipsy excuse, she highly doubted Hanna was tipsy at a coffee shop. But whatever it was still a cute story for Caleb and Hanna. But then they had tons of those from what Hanna told her. “Wait, wait. My hair? I think I need to hear this,” and she was determined to get Peeta to say it too. He shouldn’t have brought it up if he wasn’t prepared to follow through.
“I know my sunglasses,” Caleb replied with a nod smirk on his face. Because it was more the shoplifting he had commented on than the sunglasses but he wasn’t about to share that fact. And that was also part of the reason he didn’t take Hanna up on her shirt offer. He didn’t want her to risk stealing it. “Next time you spill coffee on me I’ll let you buy me a shirt,” he teased Hanna because knowing her there could very well be a next time.
So it had been a lot more complicated than that between Caleb’s ‘oh I don’t do relationships’ thing and the random running into one another before he finally decided to ask her out. But Hanna wasn’t about to correct Peeta, not when there was Caroline demanding he go on about her hair because really. He had walked right into that one.
“You really do.” Yes, she smirked as well since it was basically an inside joke for the two of them. Then the comment about the coffee. “You say that like I’ll spill coffee on you again. You lost out on the free shirt, your loss.”
“Your hair shines as bright as the sun and emanates the warmth of the feelings I have for you,” Peeta commented dramatically before smirking at her, “and that’s all ya get for free. Now, let’s rent our skates before the people behind us put forth their plan to murder us.” He had noticed that they were finally at the front of the line and he realized they should probably move on with their actions or else the people behind them might start rioting. He grabbed for his wallet in his back pocket to pay for his and Caroline’s.
Caroline’s cheeks flushed slightly as Peeta talked about her hair. Okay maybe she should have made Peeta tell her that when they were alone and not in public but whatever. It was cute. Just like him. Instead of commenting on that she just focussed on the fact that they were about to be ice skating. Because that was exciting. “Thanks,” she said to him when he paid giving him a kiss on the cheek then stepped aside to let Caleb and Hanna rent their skates.
“Knowing you, it’s bound to happen again,” he commented to Hanna before smirking at Peeta. That was pretty great for coming up with something on the spot. He doubted he could do that for Hanna. “Don’t give Hanna any ideas,” he said before stepping up to pay for his and Hanna’s skates. “Shall we?” he asked once they were purchased. Hopefully the ice skating would distract Hanna enough that she wouldn’t be asking for any hair poetry.
That was adorable and impressive. Unless Peeta had been waiting for a reason to recite poetry about Caroline’s hair and they gave it to him. But then they were purchasing ice skates. “Let’s go.” Smiling, Hanna took Caleb’s hand so they could go to the bleachers to change out of shoes into skates and get onto the ice. For now she’d be nice and not request any hair poetry. She was looking forward to ice skating right now.
