With finals coming up Ezra had a bit of a lull in things to grade. He was trying not to assign too much ahead of time to allow for his students to focus on their final papers for him and study for exams. So he was spending his time in his office writing. Or at least attempting to write. It mostly consisted of him staring at a blank paper in frustration. He was still stuck on ideas for a new novel and there was no way he could go back to his old one after the dreams. No matter how many ideas he had at the moment.
He was about to give up and go get some coffee when there was a knock at his door. “Come in,” Ezra called looking up from his desk figuring it was Anna stopping by to see him, or perhaps another student with questions about finals. There had been quite a few coming to see him lately. It was funny how his office always seemed to get busy around midterms and finals.
It had been a short day at Creekside and while she waited for John to finish up with whatever he was doing, Clara had decided to go bother Ezra. Why? No real reason, she just felt like being social. It was a good thing and while things had been crazy the past few months, something normal would be nice as well. It was the time of year, right?
Remembering the type of coffee Ezra tended to get, the brunette arrived at his door and grinned when he said to come in.
“Surprise, I brought coffee.” Because why not. It was Clara, it’s what she did. Just because she tended to have to keep tabs on John, Troy and her dad didn’t mean she couldn’t do the same for friends.
“Clara,” a smile spread across his face as he motioned for her to come in and have a seat across from him. She was certainly a pleasant surprise. “You know I’ll never say no to coffee,” he added pushing his notebook aside. He preferred a notebook for brainstorming and outlining purposes when it came to his writing. A laptop was used when he got to the actual writing part. If that would ever happen again.
“To what do I owe this pleasure?” he asked accepting the cup of coffee from her.
Stepping into the office with a bit of bounce, Clara grinned as Ezra said he never said no to coffee, “I know. I would worry about you if you ever did.” It was true. The day Ezra said no to coffee was the day that Clara would be convinced that the world was coming to an end. She had seen a lot in her dreams, travelled the entirety of Earth’s life span, but Ezra turning down coffee would be the true end of the world.
Handing it over as she sat down, the English teacher shrugged.
“John’s in lecture so I decided to come bother you.”
He was fairly certain a lot of people would be worried if he ever turned down coffee. “Ah, figured you would settle for me? I see how it is,” he joked taking a sip of his coffee. “I suppose I can’t complain though since you brought coffee,” he added smile still on his face.
Ezra’s office was cluttered with books by different authors some of the more notable ones were Ernest Hemingway, Jane Austen, and Charles Dickens. His apartment was the same way. But Clara had been to his office a few times now so she was probably used to it. “So how have you been?”
“Basically!” Grinning, Clara rested against the chair. It wasn’t as if it were a bad reason but she rarely got to the campus lately so it was usually bouncing around between different friends she had made on campus. Which included Ezra. Besides, literature, how could she not randomly stop by with coffee to check up? “I know how to sweeten the deal, what can I say?”
Clutter was something Clara was far too used to. Between visiting offices, her dad’s flat and sharing a place with Troy? Clutter was normal. Always something to find though. “Oh you know. New dreams, end of the year prep, things of that nature.” And that was when her gaze landed on a Jane Austen book. “Brilliant woman, Jane.” Because well, there was a prank war going on in her dreams that was amazing.
For all the danger and high stakes, there were some pretty amazing things that one got to do with time travel.
“It certainly makes second choice feel better,” he joked with another sip of his coffee. Not that he minded. He was happy to get a visit in general. “So basically the same as me?” Because new dreams and preparing for the end of the semester pretty much summed up his life as well. “I hope your dreams aren’t too horrible.”
And then she was commenting on Jane Austen. Or Jane as she said it so casually. As if she knew her or something. “Oh?” Ezra asked raising a brow.
“I try!” Besides, Clara got the feeling from Ezra that he needed to be social more or else or he’d spend all his time in his flat. Even if she was visiting his office hours and not dragging him out. Social and meeting up with friends was still important. “Really, it’s the norm around here.” Dealing with new dreams while having to deal with deadlines and the like. “They’re brilliant. Adventures, things like that.” No need to go into the complications and dangers. She was taking more risks, life was too short and she wanted to live without regrets in them. Clara could understand that. The terror or worry? Those always eventually went away.
Grinning, Clara took a sip of her tea.
“Phenomenal kisser strictly between us. We’re in the middle of a prank war right now. She’s the worst. I love her… Take that as you like.”
Clara was correct in her assumption. He did need to be a bit more social instead of just sticking to his routine of writing, teaching and grading papers. So having a friendly face stop by to visit him was a much welcome distraction. “Adventures? Sounds exciting.” Much better than dreaming about a bunch of high school girls being cyber stalked. “I want to hear more about these adventures.”
Or more about Jane Austen. Because he was not expecting her to say that. “I take it you mean in the dreams,” Ezra replied with a bit of a smirk at the thought of Clara and Jane Austen kissing. “What sort of pranks do you play?” He was obviously intrigued. “You have to tell me me more.”
“Well, I travel through space and time. So like I said, adventures. Saving the world, you know things like that.” So blase, as if it were an everyday occurrence. But for her, it sort of was. At least in the dreams. And it was an easier way to brush off all the panic and worry that tended to accompany a lot of the dreams. Nope. Just focus on the fun ones. Like Jane Austen.
“Yes, I do mean the dreams.” How else would she get to meet Jane Austen? But really. Those were brilliant memories from the dreams. How could they not be? Which Clara gladly went into, because prank war with Jane Austen. How many English teachers got to do that?
Stupid question Ezra. Of course she met Jane Austen in the dreams. There would be no way for her to here. But still sometimes these things needed clarification. Differentiating between dreams and real life could get difficult. However that one basically went without saying.
“Officially jealous of your dreams. Not only do you get to hang out with Jane Austen, but traveling through time? That’s just.. incredible. The saving the world part isn’t too bad either. But tell me, have you met any other authors?” Jane Austen was impressive enough as it was, so even if she was the only one Clara had met in her time travel dreams Ezra would still be quite impressed and jealous.
Telling the difference between dreams and reality could be exceedingly difficult at times. Goodness knew Clara sometimes struggled. She was good at knowing where she was after the fact or going about her day, but that didn’t mean she hadn’t had some very complicated and confusing reactions to the dreams. Not just in terms of emotions but in side effects. Not knowing who she was, everything be off, things backwards.
“No but I know the Doctor has. But I have met Robin Hood!” Which was super amazing for Clara given Robin Hood had always been her favourite story both in the dreams and in the waking world.
Robin Hood was also impressive. How come Clara go dreams where she got to time travel and meet authors and heroes and he was stuck in Rosewood with A? Not much he could do about it though. Besides he knew his dreams could be a lot worse. Still he couldn’t help but be a little jealous.
“Okay, you’re dreams are officially amazing,” he commented with another sip of coffee. “I think we are going to have to go to lunch so you can tell me all about them.”
