Who: Aria Montgomery and Ezra Fitz
What: Random encounter
When: Recent
Where: Coffee shop
Rating/Warnings: Low/none
Status: Complete!
Before heading to campus for the day Ezra stopped at small, locally owned coffee shop. The guy loved his coffee, but he couldn’t stand the big chains like Starbucks. They were ruining coffee with all their fancy and themed drinks if you asked him. Plus he liked to support the local economy. This particular coffee shop also sold books and did poetry readings and things like that. It was his favorite way to start the day. Of course, the readings were at night, but still he loved the feel of the place.
Ezra had just finished adding a bit of milk to his usual black coffee when he spotted the last person he was expecting to see. Aria. Something compelled him to walk over to her. “Morning, Ms. Montgomery,” he said with a small smile. Even though he called most of his students by their last names, it felt odd calling Aria that. Wrong even. But it was the proper thing to do so he would just have to get used to it.
Aria didn't mind the chains ironically, but this morning this little place had caught her attention. She was still discovering what the college area had to offer, and though it wasn’t far from home it was still something worth looking into. If it meant more time away from her parents usual haunts she was all for it. She loved them but their bickering got to her sometimes. She pitied Mike who was so in the middle of it all, but she was in no mood to deal with the most recent vent text about it. It was far too early and Aria was not caffeinated enough to cope with it.
She blinked away from her phone at the sound of her name. It took her a moment, but a barely notable one. “Morning, professor Fitz or. ..do you like Mr. Fitz?” she asked warmly as she put her phone almost grudgingly info her pocket. Eventually she'd see it again, and there it would be. Mikes messages, stark reminders that some things just never changed.
Seeing Aria on her phone like that, well it felt a lot like the dreams. It wasn’t the best sense of deja vu either. Of course he was worried about the whole A issue. But there was no reason to worry about that here. Right?
There it was, Mr. Fitz. He wasn’t used to hearing that other than the dreams. It was particularly strange hearing that from her. “You can call me Ezra,” he replied taking a sip of his coffee. “At least when we aren’t on campus. There Professor Fitz is fine.” It’s what everyone else called him and would help to remind him that she wasn’t the girl from his dreams.
Aria had yet to dream or she might have caught his worry, she wasn’t aware of A or any of that just yet. It was probably a blessing. She had no reason to be afraid when her phone went off, other than that it might be her parents fighting again. They did that a lot and it seemed to involve her a fair bit recently.
She gave him a bit of a nod as he explained what to call him. “Ezra then.” It was odd, calling teachers by first names still for her. She was still new to the fact that they had lives outside of school. “I didn’t think you’d be into a scene like this?” She motioned to the coffee shop and it’s various quirky waitresses.
It was an odd sense of deja vu hearing her call him Ezra. But he liked it a lot better than Mister Fitz. “Oh really?” Ezra replied to her next comment a teasing smile on his face. “And just what do you think my ‘scene’ is?” He was surprised Aria had put any thought into it at all. Especially if she hadn’t started dreaming yet.
For her it was just odd. Calling a teacher by first name, but this was college after all. Teachers had their own lives too she suspected, she wasn’t entirely sure-but hey there they were in a coffee shop together. “I don’t know, I pictured more old world writer from you than new edgey poet. “ She mused as she folded her arms casually. “Though I’m not sure if a place like that even exists. This is probably as close as it’ll get for now.” She said as she gave him a once over.
“I’m not sure if I should take offense to that or not,” he joked taking a sip of his coffee. “As long as it’s not a chain I’m good.” Although he would enter a chain if he was desperate enough. “Well I’ll let you get back to your texting. See you in class, Aria.”
