Stefan was looking forward to having some friends over. He’d have to tell Lexi and Caroline that he had a kegger while they were off in Vegas. It wouldn’t exactly be true--two friends and a couple twelve packs of beer didn’t exactly constitute a kegger, did it?--but it was a fun story. Stefan was socializing outside of his circle. Maybe making a new circle? It was good.
He’d turned the hot tub on about half an hour ago, so it would be hot by the time Ezra and Wash got there. And then Stefan pulled the beers from the fridge and stuck them in a cooler full of ice. That would sit next to the hot tub.
After having an awkward moment with Ezra on his birthday, Stefan was looking forward to celebrating with his friends in a laid back way.
Wash had promised Salvatore he’d buy the first round of drinks in honor of the man’s birthday, and since plans had changed from going to a bar to hanging out at Salvatore’s place he figured he’d buy a six pack to bring. That was at least two rounds for the three of them.
Wash hadn’t met Ezra Fitz before. He’d seen posts from the guy on Valarnet on occasion, but had never actually interacted with him. He was a professor at UCI, but that was all Wash really knew about the guy. At least he was from the network, somehow and for some reason, that made the prospect of cold meeting someone a little less intimidating. They already had the whole Dream and weirdness Orange County had to offer in common. Not that Wash really wanted to spend a lot of time talking about that if he could help it.
He hoped he’d gotten the right kind of beer. People could be picky about that kind of thing. An IPA seemed like the safest bet. Everyone liked IPA, right? Six pack in one hand, Wash rang the bell.
Ezra also brought over a six pack. Stefan was providing the hot tub and it was his birthday weekend. The least Ezra could do was provide some beer. He arrived moments after Wash, walking up next to him on the doorstep. “Hey,” Ezra greeted with a nod. He had never met the guy before but Stefan was friends with him and Stefan usually had good taste in friends, (except for Caroline).
“Looks like we had the same idea,” he said holding up his own six pack as they waited for Stefan to answer the door. Weren’t vampires supposed to be fast?
Stefan wasn’t really picky about his alcohol. With his vampire tolerance, he could drink both Wash and Ezra under the table (the hot tub?) with room to spare… but he wasn’t that kind of ass hole. He was genuinely happy to be spending some time with his friends, and so long as no one accidentally chopped off a finger, he should be able to keep control.
He wasn’t using his vamp speed, thanks, Ezra. Stefan came to the door a moment later, and broke into a smile at the pair of them standing there. “Did you carpool?” He asked, playfully, then stepped aside to let his friends in.
“Nope,” Wash hooked his thumb over his shoulder towards the van parked at the street. It looked a little beat up (yes those were bullet holes in the side, don’t ask, Wash didn’t know where they’d come from either), “that one’s mine.” And yes, he was quite proud of that fact, the grin on his face said as much.
He stepped inside the house and held up the six back of IPA. “Happy birthday, Salvatore.” He glanced over towards the man he was assuming to be Ezra Fitz. “Looks as though we both had the same idea.”
Ezra glanced back at the van, eyebrows furrowing at the bullet holes but he didn’t comment. Instead he just followed Wash into the house. “Happy birthday, man,” he echoed setting his own six pack down on the counter. Hopefully this visit went better than the last time he had come to the house. “How’s having the house to yourself? Quiet without all those girls running around?” He still didn’t know how Stefan could stand living with three girls all the time. Ezra imagined it might start to feel like a sorority.
Stefan glanced over his friends’ shoulders to the van and raised both eyebrows. He drove something a little less… bullet-ridden? And a bit smaller. But hey, to each his own. (Maybe the car from his Dreams would show up. That would be pretty amazing.) He closed the door behind Ezra and Wash.
“Thanks.” Stefan said, giving a smile. “And hey, I like the way you both think. The more the merrier.” He motioned for the guys to follow him out into the backyard. “I set it for a hundred degrees. We can go a little higher if you want.” He was a vampire, he could set it to whatever he wanted… but he didn’t want to cook his friends.
So the van had a few battle scars, it just proved that it was both well loved and tough, but if neither Salvatore or Ezra was going to say anything about them, neither was Wash.
“Well you know what they say about great minds,” he said as he set his six pack down next to Ezra’s on the counter. “Besides, I don’t think anything I bought was going to top a stuffed unicorn.” He gave Salvatore a shit eating grin, “and you don’t have to worry about naming these.”
Real talk time. Wash had been in a hot tub probably all of...once in his life? Maybe twice. Both of which had been during leave and only once sober. He had no idea of 100 degrees was an appropriate temperature. It sounded...well...hot, but that was supposed to be the point of a hot tub, right?
He cleared his throat. “Uh, yeah, that sounds fine to me.” He glanced towards Ezra and hoped that if the temperature was too hot, the other man would speak up and say so.
Ezra grinned along with Wash as they walked out to the back yard. “You’re right,” he agreed. “Nothing will beat Mr. Horny.” Name wise or present wise, but the unicorn really did need a better name. Or they could both just tease Stefan about it for the rest of the day. Birthday or not a name like that deserved some teasing.
Back when Ezra was growing up he had a mansion house with a pool and a hot tub. So he had some experience. “Fine with me,” Ezra agreed. It was a little on the warm side but not extremely hot. Besides the weather was getting cooler anyway.
Stefan gave a little laugh. “Well, just me and Mr. Horny hanging around…” Okay, he could be grown-up about this and laugh at his own terrible naming skills. Besides, that unicorn was awesome. It was about as big as he was, and … okay, he was man enough to admit it, it was nice to cuddle with. Cough. “It’s definitely quiet, but the girls should be back late tonight. Then I’m sure it’ll be the opposite.”
Stefan led the way through the house and into the yard, then over to the hot tub. He tugged his shirt off, and climbed into the water. There was a cooler for the beers sitting beside the tub, and a bottle opener within reach. Really, what more could they need? Stefan may or may not have been living in that tub since the girls left for Vegas.
“I really should have been working all weekend. But hey, it’s my birthday. Right?” Stefan grinned, reaching for his bottle.
Mr. Horny. Just hearing it said out loud made Wash snort a laugh. Salvatore had to keep the name. It was too funny to change.
Wash grabbed one of the six packs from the counter and took it outside with them. And there it was. The hot tub. There was all warm and bubbling and inviting. Yeah, if the hot tub were at Wash’s apartment, he’d probably never get out of it, either. First though, cold beer. He handed a bottle to Salvatore and then one to Ezra before putting the rest into the cooler. “It’s your birthday, man, and you have the house to yourself? I’d be worried if you weren’t taking advantage of it.”
Beer safely put away, Wash tugged his shirt off over his head and climbed into the tub as well. The water was a little warm, maybe, but damn, it felt good.
“Thanks,” Ezra said accepting the beer from Wash before removing his own shirt and climbing in the hot tub.
“Working on your birthday?” Ezra raised a brow. “That’s just sad. I agree with Wash. Take advantage of having this place to yourself for the weekend. Before it turns back into a sorority. Get some quality time in with Mr. Horny.” He smirked. It just sounded so wrong, but it was hilarious. Stefan was the only guy he knew that could pull off owning a stuffed unicorn with that name. If you could really consider that pulling it off. He had a feeling he and Wash would be teasing him about it for most of the day.
Stefan thought for a moment about what other people might have done with an empty house. Filled it with bros and hos? Poker night? Strippers? Whatever. Stefan wasn’t really interested in any of those things. And now-a-days, he didn’t trust himself around beautiful women. (Well, aside from his roommates, really.) He didn’t want to lose control and rip someone’s head off.
Then he laughed. Stefan should never have named his Unicorn what he did. Something more cutesy and endearing, if he ever had another woman over to his place (which would probably never happen, but…) he’d need to have a cuter name for it than Mr. Horny. “Right. I’m pretty happy with beers and friends in the hot tub. Maybe there’s… a game on… later.” Stefan didn’t follow sports, but maybe one of his friends did. They could have nachos and drink beer and watch tv. Wasn’t that what normal dudes did with their time?
Even if Salvatore decided to change the unicorn’s name it was doubtful Wash would call it anything but it’s original name (plus, the way his memory was going lately, he probably wouldn’t remember even if Salvatore did change it).
“There’s probably a college game on somewhere,” he said with a shrug and a pull from his beer bottle. “UCLA versus….someone.” He laughed, “Honestly, I’ve only only ever followed sports on the periphery. I followed whatever sports or teams my friends watched or followed.” Thoughtful pause. “Which was interesting when North and South followed rival baseball teams. I’m pretty sure South had chosen the White Sox just to piss her brother off. Which would have been entertaining all on its own. North rarely got mad at anything and no matter what South did, he always somehow managed to look past it. Dude had the patience of a goddamn saint. You wouldn’t know it to meet him, but he was the deadliest sniper on our squad. Besides,” Wash adjusted his position in the tub to keep from sliding under the water. “Unless you plan on dragging the TV out here, I don’t think we’ll be watching anything.”
Ezra really had no desire to watch a game of any sort. He had never been interested in sports. Growing up he always preferred to get lost in a good book then play or watch sports. He was still the same way now.
“Wait, you have friends named North and South?” Those weren’t the most common names. Ezra just wanted to make sure they were names and he wasn’t referring to North and South teams, because he wasn pretty sure that was a thing.
“I’m good with skipping any sort of game and just making fun of Stefan’s unicorn.”
“Oh, good.” Stefan said, relieved that they wouldn’t have to put on the television for any reason. He relaxed down into the water with a happy sigh. Today was turning into a good day. Even if he and his unicorn buddy were the butt of every joke.
