Caleb had to admit he was a little nervous about this whole Thanksgiving thing. Mostly because he didn’t know what to expect. He had never participated in one before. But he obviously comfortable around Hanna and he was comfortable around Ashley too so it would be fine. Just another new experience that he probably wouldn’t be having if it wasn’t for Hanna.
He rang the bell standing on her doorstep with dessert in hand, (that he had picked up from Baxter Bakery) and flowers. They were for her mom or well the whole house really. That was supposed to be a thing right? You bring flowers over for decoration? He knew wine was a thing but considering Hanna was underage still he hadn’t gone for that (although he was sure Ashley would have loved it). Anyway the point was he was trying to contribute to the Thanksgiving feast. Do his part. It meant a lot that he was being included and he wanted to show that, not just to Hanna but her family as well.
Hanna was trying to help as much as she was physically able. Which was why she was in the kitchen trying to get something when Caleb rang the bell. Prepared to try and answer the door, the blonde was stopped by her grandmother.
“No no, I’ve got it, you stay in here.”
Smiling some in thanks, Hanna went back to doing finishing touches. As for Regina, while she could have spent Thanksgiving with her son and his new family, she once again opted out. She hadn’t gone to the wedding and she had no plans on spending family time with Isabel and Kate. No thank you.
Opening the door, she just smiled.
“Hello, honey. You must be Caleb, come in. I’m Regina, Hanna’s grandmother.” And with the Southern hospitality.
Hanna had mentioned her grandmother was going to be there too. From her dad’s side which Caleb didn’t quite fully grasp but he liked Ashley a hell of a lot more than Hanna’s father (from the one time he had seen him and the stories he heard) so he couldn’t really blame Grandma Marin. Or Regina as she introduced herself.
“Unless Hanna has another boyfriend I don’t know about,” he joked because it’s what he did and he also knew it wasn’t true. “Nice to meet you Regina. I’d shake your hand but mine are full at the moment,” he added with a smirk as he entered Hanna’s house that he was now quite familiar with. “Hanna’s told me a lot about you.”
And then he spotted Hanna and Ashley in the kitchen. His poor girlfriend was trying her best to help out even though she was still on crutches. He made his way over to them with Regina. “These are for you,” he said handing the flowers to Ashley. Maybe he should have gotten something for the grandma too? And he set the pie down on the counter before making his way over to Hanna. “I picked up a pumpkin pie,” he added kind of to everyone even though Hanna had his attention at the moment as he greeted her with a kiss.
Between Ashley not being close to her own family and Regina clearly preferring Ashley over Isabel, Hanna didn’t question. It had been like this for years. Apparently the one year Regina had gone over to Tom’s for Thanksgiving, it had been a disaster. Who knew. Either way, the woman smiled in amusement.
“Well that would make dinner quite awkward.” She could appreciate joking, it was clear Caleb knew that Hanna wasn’t like that. “But she’s talked about you as well. All good things, I assure you.”
Leading him into the kitchen, Regina smiled as Hanna looked up and brightened with a smile. No wonder Ashley approved of the boy. Not to mention he gave her flowers. Ashley in turn smiled and took the flowers to put into a vase as she thanked Caleb.
And Hanna was just happy he was there. She hadn’t been too worried about her grandmother scaring him off. Why would she? Regina was amazing. Instead she just returned the kiss and then nodded in approval. “Pumpkin pie is always good.”
Caleb had yet to meet Isabel or Kate but he didn’t particularly want to anyway. Plus he already knew that Ashley was way better. Even in the dreams she had come around to Caleb trying to help him win Hanna back. So yes, Caleb was a big fan of Hanna’s mom.
“Isn’t that how Thanksgiving dinners usually go?” he was still joking but that’s the way it always seemed to go down in movies. Lots of awkwardness around the table. He didn’t think it would be like that in real life though.
“I hear it’s a classic,” he smiled at Hanna. Plus they sort of had a thing with pumpkins. Well not really but they had gone to a pumpkin patch so close enough.
“Oh yes. But there’s only the four of us. No extended family for ungodly political conversations where you want to shove someone’s roll in their mouth to shut them up.”
“Regina!”
“What?” Because yes. Regina totally had wanted to do that to Isabel at one point.
While her mom and grandmother discussed the finer points of not shoving rolls into someone’s mouth, Hanna just nodded. “Yeah, it’s pretty classic. That and apple pie. Or pecan. But you can never go wrong with pumpkin.”
Caleb liked Hanna’s grandma. She was funny. He even laughed as he pictured her stuffing a roll in someone’s mouth. Although in his mind it was Tom’s mouth not Isabel’s considering he had no idea what Isabel looked like.
“You know, I think I can actually see your grandma shoving a roll into someone’s mouth,” he commented to Hanna as he watched Regina and Ashley argue about the roll issue. The whole pie discussion already forgotten.
“Now you go sit down and I’ll do whatever it was you were doing. Rest that leg of yours.”
The pie discussion was pretty miniscule when it came down to it. Because really. Dinner roll conversations were obviously much more engaging.
“I think she said she wanted to do that to Isabel the one time she had Thanksgiving with them…” Clearly that had gone well, hence her grandmother being with the ex-wife and not good enough daughter. But it was how it had been for years now so Hanna didn’t mind. “I’m surprised she didn’t actually go through with it.”
But then Caleb was telling her to go sit so he could finish was she was doing.
“You really don’t have to, but I’m not going to win this argument, am I?” Not like it was an actual argument. Still, she could tell that this wasn’t something she would win.
“She should have,” he smirked. Perhaps it was wrong of him to make a comment like that on someone he didn’t know but from everything Hanna had told him? Yeah he didn’t like Isabel or Kate. Clearly Regina didn’t either if she was choosing to have Thanksgiving with her son’s ex wife of her son. And Hanna was more than good enough. There was no question about it.
“Nope,” and no it wasn’t an argument but he did want her to rest her leg. It needed to get better already. Yes he had his own selfish reasons for that but he also hated seeing Hanna having to hobble around all the time. “I told you to enjoy this waiting on you thing while it lasts. I’m not sure why you aren’t taking more advantage of it.”
“I would have paid good money to see it.” Given all of her issues with Kate, which seemed to be consistent in her dreams. The whole having to stop the wedding thing was just… Hanna didn’t know. She hated how the insecurities and fears bled through, but that morning she’d woken up and Caleb had come back from seeing his mom, so that was good. And they had A’s phone. Maybe it would be over soon.
“Just checking.” Grinning, the blonde then shrugged when he said he didn’t understand why she wasn’t taking more advantage of the being waited on thing. “Just feels awkward I guess.” She didn’t know how else to put it. It was just awkward.
Caleb had yet to meet Kate in the dreams or real life and he didn’t particularly care to. He knew Hanna didn’t want much to do with her step sister so there was no need for him to meet her. However he was definitely enjoying Hanna’s grandma.
“Well too bad,” Caleb replied smiling at her. “Because I’m taking care of you whether you like it or not. Now go sit.” He finished up what Hanna had been doing before going to join her on the couch placing an arm around her while they waited for the turkey to finish cooking.
Hands held up in mock surrender, Hanna smiled and shook her head in amusement. “Fine, fine.”
With that, she made her way to the couch and skimmed her phone. No A messages, so that was a relief. Not like it mattered since A wasn’t there but it was still stressful. At least until Aria showed up and she got to talk with her. Then Caleb was joining her on the couch and she smiled up at him as she got settled against him.
Soon enough dinner was ready they all sat down at the table to eat. Caleb stuffed his face with all the food. It was the first time he had stuffing. All the food was great though, the turkey, the mashed potatoes, the cranberry sauce and the rolls. It was easy for him to talk to Hanna’s grandma. She was hilarious and he found himself laughing throughout the meal.
So this is what Thanksgiving was like? Yeah he had been missing out. But he wasn’t going to dwell on it. He was just happy to be included now. And it was all thanks to his amazing girlfriend.
“So pie?” he said standing up to go grab the pie he had brought over.
That was what Thanksgiving was like. Hanna was happy that it had gone well and that he had gotten along well with Regina. It was important to her. It didn’t really matter that it had basically been a month into the relationship, she wanted him to get along with her family and already her grandmother was asking him to Chanukah. So while Caleb made friends with her mom and grandomther (which really wasn’t hard), she was just talking to her best friend.
There was no way she was going to have let him have Thanksgiving alone, though. Not on her watch. Either of them.
“Yes please.” Grinning up at Caleb in thanks. Because pie. It seemed that Regina had decided to start talking Aria’s ear off about.. who knew what, so for now it was just them.
Caleb got to work cutting up the pie and serving it to everyone although he was more than happy to just focus on Hanna for now. Letting Aria talk with Hanna’s family.
“So Hannukah huh?” Another holiday he had never celebrated. But really what holiday had he celebrated? He barely had any memories from when he lived with his mother, he had been so young. But he had a feeling he would remember if he had celebrated some sort of Winter holiday. “I guess you’re stuck with me for another month.”
Taking the pie as it was given to her, Hanna just smiled and nodded. “It’s usually mom, grandmom, me, all four of us,” being the Liars, “or variation thereof. Obviously you made a good impression to get an invitation.” What with the Liars being seen as extended family.
“Oh no. The horror. However will I survive.” She was definitely good with Caleb being around for longer. “I mean, this year it falls from the 6th to 14th, so I mean, it’s not that long in the future.” That was said with a smirk given the fact teasing was just normal for them.
A year ago Caleb never would have imagined he would have a girlfriend and would be sitting around the table with her family and friend at Thanksgiving making a good impression. But here he was and it all just felt so normal to him. Of course Hanna was a big part of that. Okay she was the main reason for it.
“I guess I will just have to impress you after that,” he teased. “Make sure you want to keep me around for New Years.” He planned on being around a lot longer than that as well but talking too far into the future was weird, even if it was just in a teasing way. New Years felt acceptable.
“So New Years we decide to consider where we are? Got it.” Laughing some, Hanna bit her lip and looked down in amusement before taking a bite of her pie. She could definitely get used to this. It was certainly the most healthy relationship she’d been in. Though, Hanna had always been aware that she tended to get into bad ones just because she was searching for something she could never name. It wasn’t like that with Caleb, though.
“Seems like the appropriate time to assess,” Caleb teased back with a laugh of his own before digging into his pie. Yeah, he was starting to get used to this.
