Kitty really wasn’t sure what to make of Orange County. Los Angeles was better in that there were more people, more things to do and not so much of the ‘rich’ people vibe she got. Probably came from being used to the city and not so much with the whole suburb thing. But here she was all the same. Working on some inane ‘case’ because Sherlock found it to be of importance for god knew what. Which okay, the things he had her work on or that he worked on did tend to be important.
But dreams and all the mental talk that she had read about on the network. Yes, she had gone back as far as she could to what had appeared to be the first posting. Had made notes on the different incidents that occurred on a large scale and then had followed up through news articles and reporting that had taken place. A lot of cover up it seemed.
The next phase was to see if she could find any sort of physical evidence to corroborate the things she had read or if the ‘official’ stories held merit. (She doubted it, official stories were just there to keep people unaware.) She also had a handful of books to read for possible explanations. Some which she planned to read where Sherlock could see just to make him twitch. Subtle revenge.
Right now though, the Brit was at a park where she had read about something happening. No visual signs of damage. Unsurprising.
Veronica rarely took Backup for walks. Yuffie usually walked him for her, but today she felt like walking baby. The pit bull was the closest thing she was ever going to have to a baby unless you counted Viv. So to a local park to walk him she went.
The blonde was enjoying the fresh air even though it was getting a little cooler (not all that cold because California, although knowing Orange County it would probably end up snowing soon). Backup seemed to be enjoying himself too, perhaps a little too much because before she knew it he took off running toward a brunette, yanking the leash right out of Veronica’s hands. She quickly chased after him.
“Backup! Heel!” Veronica called out to get her dog to come back to her side. He obeyed, he was a well trained dog but she wasn’t sure that was about, by this point she had basically reached the other woman. “Sorry,” she apologized with a sheepish smile.
So far, Kitty was convinced she was going to melt. But that came from not being from the area and while it was cooler, that didn’t mean much to her. Still, there were no signs of anything strange going on or anything that could be used as a clue or evidence and Kitty was about to get up to go investigate another location when she was suddenly being accosted by an overzealous and excited pitbull before it was told to heel. Which it did.
Slightly amused, Kitty just quirked a brow as she looked to the woman who came up to her to apologise. She looked.. familiar. Lawyer if she recalled. While she never did any testifying, Kitty did sometimes go to watch trials that she and Sherlock helped the police with.
“It’s fine. Really.”
“He doesn’t usually do that. He must like you,” it was a compliment really.
Now that Veronica was pretty much over the minor embarrassment of Backup’s misbehavior she realized she actually knew this woman somehow. She was some sort of PI. Veronica had seen her at the courthouse a few times. “Do I know you?”
Well that was a first. Amused brow quirk and Kitty just nodded some.
“Alright, then.” She couldn’t say that she ever had the approval of animals before. Never put much thought into it. She kept to herself mostly after everything with her father and the life she liked to pretend hadn’t existed. And she tended to give off an air of ‘leave me alone’ and that was that. Yet here she was…
“Maybe in passing. You’re a lawyer, right?” She was quick to pick things up like that. Not to mention Kitty had already placed her when she had shown up.
“Yeah,” Veronica replied even though that wasn’t entirely true anymore. Of course she could still practice law if she wanted to, but that was no longer her chosen career. It was still new and explaining that especially to somewhat of a stranger, well it was just complicated.
“Veronica Mars,” she said extending her hand out to shake the other woman’s. “And you’re some type of consultant?”
So she’d been right in where she had recognised Veronica. Which, of course she was. There was a reason Sherlock had decided she was to be his protege. If she were subpar at recognising a person even from random run ins, she probably would still be in London keeping her head down and avoiding everyone.
“Kitty Winter. Yeah. My partner and I consult with the police usually on complicated crimes.” Hand shaking was the polite thing to do so Kitty followed suit before looking to the pitbull and back to Veronica. Of course now she was investigating the network and it’s weird happenings which seemed absolutely absurd. But it was what it was.
“Nice to formally meet you Kitty,” she said as she dropped her hand back to her side. Veronica was usually good at recognizing people herself but the whole Backup incident had her distracted. Her dog sometimes. Although he was good for protection. Not like she got herself involved in quite as many sticky situations as the dreams but still. Best dream gift she had ever received. And hey, she had figured it out right eventually.
“Complicated crimes, huh?” Veronica commented. “Sounds like interesting work. Must keep you from getting bored.” Not like it was really possible to get bored around here, but she wasn’t sure how much Kitty knew about that.
“Likewise.” Kitty might not have been the most personable of people, but she was better at it than Sherlock. Which really wasn’t saying much. But she at least could follow normal social convention when it came to greetings and the like.
Talk of dreams and strange happenings definitely didn’t seem normal to Kitty. And so far what she had pulled up in terms of evidence had done little to prove anything. Not that she could do much else. “You would think.” But given the fact that regardless of the crime, the process tended to be pretty much the same in terms of investigating, it wasn’t as interesting as it might sound.
Still. Kitty enjoyed it. She was good at it and it made her feel productive. Like she was doing something and maybe, in some small way, making up for not seeing the signs when it came to her father.
“Anything interesting now? Or can you not talk about it?” As usual Veronica was nosey but she also knew that things like that weren’t supposed to be talk about. Still the blonde couldn’t help but ask. Her curiosity really did get the best of her sometimes. But as long as it wasn’t getting her into too much trouble that was all that really mattered.
“Just researching the strange things mentioned in the news.” Since who knew if Veronica were on the network or not. It seemed easier to just stick with that instead of the truth. Not like Kitty even knew what that was. “More curiosity than anything. See if the move to Orange County is worth it.”
“Orange County is full of strangeness,” Veronica confirmed. Although she wasn’t going to go into too much detail about it. It seemed like Kitty was still in the process of learning everything and Veronica certainly wasn’t about to be the bearer of bad news. “You probably won’t get bored here either.”
Learning everything was definitely one way of putting it. “So I’ve read.” It was vague enough and could always just be about the news reports. Or it could be more but Kitty wasn’t exactly versed in the subtle language of trying to discern ‘dreamers’ or whatever. She just didn’t feel like elaborating. “Well, that’s a relief.”
“If you do get bored you can give me a call. Though I doubt it will happen,” Veronica offered and pulled out an old business card from her wallet. It had her cell phone number on it and of course it still had her listed as a lawyer but that was what Kitty knew her as anyway so it worked. She handed the card over to Kitty.
That was.. unexpected. But Kitty was fine with that. Having contacts was always important. While not one of Sherlock’s ‘mundanes’ or the people with isolated skills, it would be beneficial to have someone who knew the area and the strangeness. Or just to talk? She wasn’t sure what Veronica meant about if she did get bored to call. Either way, the Brit took the offered card. “Thanks.”
“No problem,” Veronica replied followed by a whine from Backup. Right, she was supposed to be walking him. “I should get going. See you around.”
“Yeah, see you around.” And with that, Kitty went back to her ‘investigating’.
